TOM Scully's father was offered a six-year contract worth $680,000 in November last year to work as a recruiter for Greater Western Sydney.

The Herald Sun has obtained a copy of a "Letter of Offer" to Phil Scully signed by GWS football boss Graeme "Gubby" Allan on November 10, 2010 - 12 months before the contentious deal was made public.

It reveals Scully Sr was guaranteed a job until October 2017 as the club's Melbourne-based recruiting scout on an annual salary of $100,000, with an increase of 5 per cent every year.

A SIX year, six figure contract for a no-name recruiter? Bloody ridiculous.

Anyone still believe that Scully (or Ward for that matter) actually only decided to go after the end of the season? Scully's protestations were even more vehement than Callan's, and to no one's surprise, it was a lie all along.

Even the AFL have included Scully Snr's pay packet in GWS's salary cap (as they found that his appointment was directly linked to Scully Jnr's defection) but not going any further and investigating an illegal approach for a contracted player. Typical -- they're essentially admitting the crime, but they've also decided on the appropriate penalty outside of the actual penalty process for these types of things. Thus the problem with the same body being the judge, jury and executioner on its own behaviour.

ps. The Swans (who Scully Snr worked for) must be filthy -- he would have had inside access to all the Swans recruitment data for an entire year while he was already essentially working for the enemy.

No one in football administration/operations gets that sort of tenure and I strongly doubt proven top performers like Stephen Wells wouldn't get more than a 3 year deal.
The AFL now has a clear example of a new side tampering with the recruitment process but of course no one will do anything about it.

One fact that no one seems to have picked up on - Phil Scully had been working for the Sydney Swans as their Melbourne based scout while his son was playing for Melbourne. At least they are now working for the same organisation.

This really is stinky.

I can handle the lack of flags and the unfair draw etc etc but this really makes me feel that even when we do win a flag it will be cheapened somehow.

It's crap like this that is the reason for long-term AFL fans to have lost 'the passion'. Supporters are not morons - we understand that start-up clubs need extra support in order to incrementally grow the game into new markets, for the ultimate benefit of the game and the code. The AFL and players needed to be respectful, sincere and honest to Joe Public - in short they have given the mug punters no credit or respect whatsoever for understanding the (valid) reasons to grow and expand the game, instead willingly choosing to hide behind a flimsily constructed veil of secrecy in order to appease the risk-averse minded, legally trained personnel now ruining/running our indigenous game.

We realise that the start-ups need help but they have been given everything and a little bit more. Only complete incompetence can stop GC and GWS winning flags in the next few years, but that won't guarantee them long term stability or success.

Within 2 years GWS will be able to put together a complete side of nothing but 1st round draft picks.
