Maksymow signs with Culcairn

HUME League giant Culcairn has landed the prized signing of young gun Jarrah Maksymow for next season.

Fresh from an outstanding debut season with Collingullie-Ashmont-Kapooka (CAK) this year, Culcairn has swooped in and snared the services of Maksymow for season 2012.

Maksymow attracted interest from West Australian Football League (WAFL) and Victorian Football League (VFL) clubs and still is an outside chance of ending up on an AFL list.

Western Bulldogs have also made contact with the teenage sensation about a possible spot on their rookie list.

New Culcairn captain-coach Chris Willis is thrilled with the Lions' latest signing.

"He's our big one," Willis said of the signing yesterday.

"He's a freak, he's untouchable and if we look after him and treat him the right way then he'll be great for us.

"I'm not one for ripping players away from other clubs but he's living in Albury and it makes it easier.

"Plus he's good mates with the other boys we've picked up."

Willis said while the club is thrilled to snare Maksymow, it will not stand in the way of him pursuing an AFL career

From the Hume and Farrer league to the bulldogs rookie list? That's crazy. The Hume and Farrer league isn't even close to the standard of the O & M league. While the O & M isn't even close to VFL standard. We would really be picking players out of nowhere.

I dont know anything about the bloke, and he might very well become a good player, but from the outset it would seem that we are gambiling away a rookie list selection

Because almost every year we have to pluck someone out of nowhere to try and prove how clever our recruiters are. Clayton did it and now Dalrymple does it and both have abysmal records with plucking guys from the minor leagues. All we are doing is wasting a valuable draft pick.

Whether it's a rookie pick or late draft pick in the national draft these are precious commodities and should be treated this way and not gambled away away like a drunk gambles his chips away at a casino.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens before we get carried away. But our track records suggests we're likely to do something like this.

It does say in the article that he attracted interest from WAFL and VFL clubs. I think he just wanted to stay down Albury way.

It's also a great marketing ploy for the club.

"look at this player we have found from virtual obscurity!, surely we are superior to the other clubs"

That's the beauty of the system, you can create a story out of nothing when drafting a player, but when the selection fails and it's time to cut them loose, it's barely even news worthy.

At least we know that they DO have the financial muscle to:

1. Keep tabs on a whole bunch of smokeys and project players so aren't just picking from the one or two they happen to see,

2. Actually have the resources to resettle a player properly, give them everything they need to make the transition to the big smoke etc., and

3. Have the facilities and a very good staff to player ratio (how many assistants do they have there this year?) to give the player personalised and specific attention to develop accordingly.

The gambling analogy is a perfect one -- a billionaire sheikh from the Middle East can fly into Crown on his private jet and blow a couple of million and not break a sweat, doesn't mean we should all do it. Joe Bloggs living off Centrelink should probably never set foot inside a TAB, much less Crown. Gambling is addictive, and sure a few people win now and then, but working hard and doing the sensible thing is how most of us build up our wealth, not going to the casino every week.

Just as relying on winning Tattslotto is not a sensible wealth creation strategy, so gambling away picks isn't a sensible list management strategy.

Moneyball is picking players who are statistically proven performers (at lower levels) even though they are not flashy or sexy enough for most big-time clubs. What we do is the EXACT OPPOSITE of Moneyball -- picking flashy players who have never (and will never) prove themselves statistically. Picking a Michael Barlow is Moneyball. Picking a Maksymow is gambling, pure and simple. We are like paupers throwing $1000 bills down the drain every year at draft time.

I get what you are saying, BUT what do we really know about Maksymow.

I know it is a big step from where he is playing but he may tick the statistical boxes and of course he could be completely out of his depth. I am happy to leave it to the recruiting staff, who did manage to get Schofield with a latish pick and Dahlhaus as a rookie last year.
