SIX months after publicly questioning Brian Lake's mental toughness, Western Bulldogs assistant coach Brett Montgomery has backed the All-Australian full-back to return to his best next season.
Montgomery said the fitness of the 29-year-old, who has been battered by knee, groin and shoulder injuries for the past 12 months, had improved significantly.
Lake, officially still in the rehab group recovering from knee surgery, joined teammates for part of their running session at Whitten Oval today.
"His improvement in his running gait is remarkable,'' Montgomery said after training.
