Matt Windley - Herald Sun - 30 November

SIX months after publicly questioning Brian Lake's mental toughness, Western Bulldogs assistant coach Brett Montgomery has backed the All-Australian full-back to return to his best next season.

Montgomery said the fitness of the 29-year-old, who has been battered by knee, groin and shoulder injuries for the past 12 months, had improved significantly.

Lake, officially still in the rehab group recovering from knee surgery, joined teammates for part of their running session at Whitten Oval today.

"His improvement in his running gait is remarkable,'' Montgomery said after training.

A fully fit and firing Lake ensures 3 extra wins for the season.

He certainly looked a lot leaner on the track this morning. There is still some trepidation in the knee which is noticeable when he runs (doesn't get the same amount of extension as opposed to the other leg), but he moved freely enough without any signs of a grimace.

Billy Davoren kept a pretty close eye on him, even telling him to pull back and shorten his stride length on a number of occasions.

Agree, no excuses he should be chomping at the bit.
