RIP Charlie. Absolute legend of the game.

I knew it wouldn't be far away, but I'm just devastated, he was such a nice bloke. Loved the Bulldogs right to the end, through thick and thin.

A very sad day and condolences to the Sutton Family.

One of the greatest of all Bulldogs.

Was great to hear and see you one last time at the Bulldog Hall of Fame.

Thanks for all you did and brought to the Club over so many years.

May you rest in peace Charlie.

Bled red, white & blue. The boys better do a better job of honouring his memory next time they don the tricolours than Melbourne did earlier this year.

Charlie Sutton, hero and champion. Gravity is no longer his master, and he will soar for marks and kick goals in the red white and blue in that great footy game in the sky where all legends go to play, where the Footscray Flying Bulldogs have been keeping the captain's spot open for him, and every day is a bright sunny September afternoon at the G' (except for a wet game every now and then), umpires never make mistakes and a hip and shoulder is met with a cheer from the crowd and a laugh from the bloke on the ground.

Vale, our Captain, and thank you for 1954. We know you'll be watching when we win the next one.

Such sad news for his family and the Footscray faithful who loved him and owed him so much.

He took care of the hard stuff in our greatest of moments, typifying the phrase Bulldog tenacity. Took the chance to make himself an immortal in the hearts and minds of all those who hold the red, white and blue close to their hearts. He is gone, but never forgotten.

What sad news. Never had the pleasure of meeting Charlie, but from afar he seemed to be a real gentleman. Gave his all for the Dogs, stayed "Through and Through" till the end. What amazing strength and courage for him to attend the HOF night. A sad loss, condolences to the family and his close friends. :(

Any possibility, mods, we could send our collective condolences on to the family or the club?

Vale Charlie Sutton.

I remember many training sessions where Charlie would happily talk footy with a no name like me. You were a legend of the game and a quintessential clubman. I hope you have caught up with EJ, Jack Collins and the rest of the '54 boys in red, white and blue heaven handing out shirfronts left right and centre.

RIP great man.

For those who didn't see him play, Charlie played second rover in the Premiership side. Harvey Stevens played first ruck. Harvey weighed 87 kgs and stood 188cms. Charlie also weighed 87kgs - but he stacked it into 168 cms.

A mate of mine saw some news footage of him in his playing days the other night. My mate said that he was a beautiful left-foot drop kick. He was but his natural kicking foot was right. Like Bob Skilton you couldn't tell which one was his favoured side. And this was at a time when few players could kick both feet.

The great Melbourne captain, John Beckwith once said, "I'll tell you how tough Charlie was. One day he tackled me near the boundary and we both went to ground. The hairs on his chest drew blood on my face"

He is famous for telling the team in his pre-match address on Grand Final day, "Leave the rough stuff to me and you just play the ball."

That he did and Barassi was his first casualty followed soon after by two more.

Charlie ran the Albert Hotel on Essex Street for years and was a very popular mine host. I remember when there was a strike by the Breweries he would transport stock from SA so that his patrons were looked after.

When there was a strike by the bar staff he would get his beautiful daughters in to assist behind the bar.

One night after a game at the Whitten Oval the bar was packed and an opposition supporter entered. For some unknown reason he took a poke at Charlie. About 15 regulars jumped on the intruder, last seen being carried out after being Ko'd.

Charlie was one of those bloikes who never talked about himself but would happily talk away with any body who cared to listen about other Bulldog players and the game.

A great Bulldog. A great man.

RIP Charlie, a very sad loss to the Bulldog family, and you will be deeply missed. Sincere condolences to family and friends.

Tonight is opening night of a theatrical production I am in, and I will be dedicating the performance to honour your memory, Sir. But you are on a grander stage where it is forever 1954, and I offer you a thundering ovation.
