Charlie, thanks for the memories. Hearing you interviewed on the radio over the years always filled me with great pride. Will be wearing a black armband for you at the next home game. Barkly Street is yours forever.

For those who didn't see him play, Charlie played second rover in the Premiership side. Harvey Stevens played first ruck. Harvey weighed 87 kgs and stood 188cms. Charlie also weighed 87kgs - but he stacked it into 168 cms.

A mate of mine saw some news footage of him in his playing days the other night. My mate said that he was a beautiful left-foot drop kick. He was but his natural kicking foot was right. Like Bob Skilton you couldn't tell which one was his favoured side. And this was at a time when few players could kick both feet.

The great Melbourne captain, John Beckwith once said, "I'll tell you how tough Charlie was. One day he tackled me near the boundary and we both went to ground. The hairs on his chest drew blood on my face"

He is famous for telling the team in his pre-match address on Grand Final day, "Leave the rough stuff to me and you just play the ball."

That he did and Barassi was his first casualty followed soon after by two more.

Charlie ran the Albert Hotel on Essex Street for years and was a very popular mine host. I remember when there was a strike by the Breweries he would transport stock from SA so that his patrons were looked after.

When there was a strike by the bar staff he would get his beautiful daughters in to assist behind the bar.

One night after a game at the Whitten Oval the bar was packed and an opposition supporter entered. For some unknown reason he took a poke at Charlie. About 15 regulars jumped on the intruder, last seen being carried out after being Ko'd.

Charlie was one of those bloikes who never talked about himself but would happily talk away with any body who cared to listen about other Bulldog players and the game.

A great Bulldog. A great man.
