View Full Version : A WOOF Phantom Draft
GVGjr
31-10-2012, 08:44 PM
Most years we do a WOOF Phantom draft and this year I'm seeking expressions of interest in doing the same again this year.
You can either:
1) Take on a team and do all the selections for them
2) Offer to work with someone else
3) Assist someone else (maybe someone interstate) by working off their preset nominations (because they may not be on)
This is your chance to be the recruiting manager for a side
I'm suggesting that we kick this off on Monday 5th of November at 7.30pm. This will also give some of the Victorian members a chance to keep it moving on Tuesday as it's a public holiday here for the Cup day.
Please confirm if you are interested?

Very interested
I will gladly take a team, would be happy with either GWS, Melb or St Kilda.
Would be able to start at the advertised time Monday night.

Always look forward to this, will happily take a side but not overly fussed who.
If Adelaide and Melbourne lose their picks, do we keep them in for this regardless?

Agreed, perhaps if we hold off until after the cup.
I would encourage anyone with a bit of interest in the draft to get involved, always a bit of fun. We're all amateurs with limited knowledge, so you don't need to be an expert to be involved.

1. Greater Western Sydney
Lachie Whitfield-Dandenong Stingrays, 184cm, 77kg, 18/7/94. Elite talent in the draft, gut running midfielder with elite endurance and ball use.

Port Adelaide #7 - Oliver Wines
There was a couple of local boys I thought I might consider but given Port Adelaide need a bit of everything I had to pick a potential 200 game player in Oliver Wines
Oliver Wines has a solid draft combine measuring in at 187.6cm and displaying excellent endurance.
Wines is midfielder who has a reputation as a strong tackler and as a contested ball winner.
Expected to go much higher on draft day he fits in nicely to a rebuilding Port Adelaide side.

06-11-2012, 07:13 PM
Brisbane Lions #8 - Jake Stringer
At this point in the draft, Brisbane will be looking to secure the best available talent, and for that reason I see them taking up Jake Stringer.
Jake has injury concerns however if Brisbane were confident he could overcome them, he is too hard to pass up at this pick. At 191cm he could be used all over the ground in a Luke Hodge/Brendan Goddard fashion.
Was regarded as the best talent in this draft before a broken leg earlier in the year.
Go_Dogs
06-11-2012, 07:37 PM
Richmond - Pick 9 - Sam Mayes
187cm 78kgs - I have a couple of minor concerns over Mayes, but I still like him as a player and have him inside my top 10, he's a smart runner, he can kick long and likes a goal, has played senior finals footy. He appears to struggle for decision making/execution under pressure a little but I think this can be ironed out, could play off a flank next year although needs to add bulk to his frame, eventually should be an inside/outside midfielder and has a high ceiling. I really thought about Grundy as I rate him (and a couple of others) higher as best available, and Richmond did trade out Graham, but I think they'll persist with a Maric and Vickery and not spend another early draft selection on a ruck. Mayes is a good versatile prospect for them.
Rocco Jones
06-11-2012, 07:44 PM
Carlton Pick 11- Brodie Grundy
I know the Blues have a few ruckmen but just think he is too best player available to resist.
Not a huge fan of Warnock or Hampson anyway and it means Kruezer can play forward. Can always trade too!
SlimPickens
06-11-2012, 07:50 PM
Pick 12- GWS
Kristian Jaksch Oakleigh Chargers, 194cm, 83kg, 7/10/94
One of the best key prospects in the draft. I see Jaksch as a key defender who will fill a need at GWS and be a good support for Davies and Mohr. He can play at both ends of the ground after playing the majority of his junior footy in the forward line, he has played a fair chunk of this season as a defender. He took 28 grabs in five games for Vic Metro and kicked a bag of six goals against Tasmania at Visy Park.

Nice selection Rocco, Grundy can be a high level performer at AFL level and although it's possible he'll slide a bit on draft day, he's great value at 11 for mine.

Agree, Grundy remains one of the most intriguing prospect for me he could be as low as top 3 or be in the range he has been selected on here. I would have snapped him up if you didn't Rocco.

Pick 13 - Nick Vlastuin
Sorry for the delay guys; long and the short of this is that someone else took Plowman and that having just lost Caddy, the GCS need a contested animal, Vlastuin being the best available here. Should be able to do some damage at 187cm too.
SlimPickens
06-11-2012, 08:55 PM
Pick 14- Tim Membrey- Gippsland Power, 189cm, 88kg, 25/5/94
Prolific goal kicking medium sized forward, who is very powerful and an accurate shot at goal. He kicked a goal in every one of his 13 games for Gippsland to finish with a season tally of 45.22. Including 16 in his last 3 games of the year.
I was particularly impressed with his performance against SA at Etihad stadium where he kicked 4. He will complement Patton and Cameron nicely.

Freo like to pick players that are originally from WA (something about homesick players not being long term projects); so I think Freo will go a local boy with this and their next pick.
Laine is a Peel Thunder boy, who has a great vertical leap and is a very good kick for goal.
He performed well in the Draft Combine finishing top ten in Standing Verticle Leap, Running Verticle Leap, Agility Run, Kicking Efficiency, Goal Kicking, and Clean Hands tests.
He played well against Vic Metro in the state games, and would be a handy pick up for Freo.

Pick 38 - North Melbourne
Liam McBean
Lightly framed ruckman/key defender who can win the ball in the air and at ground level. Very agile player who is gifted athletically and makes good decisions with the football. Is an accurate shot for goal when he goes forward. Played mainly as a key defender in 2012 AFL U18s Champs where he’s still developing his game. Dangerous as a tall forward.

Agreed, was hoping to take him at 43 for Richmond.
Really interesting Phantom Draft thus far. I think the first 20 players or so were all pretty much bang on the ranges I can see them going on 22nd November. Still a lot of good players being selected outside the top 20 too, so I think the depth runs fairly deep of players you'd be happy to add to your list.

Pick 42 - North Melbourne
Jason Pongracic
Medium forward who is super competitive and has a good understanding of the game. Has unrelenting work ethic and a real presence around stoppages. Uses the ball well by hand and foot and is aggressive in his attack on the ball. Played for Vic Country at AFL U18 level in 2011 and 2012 although restricted by injury this year.

Interesting selection. Can definitely play but i'm not sure if he will go that high (or at all)

You'd know better than me - I freely admit I don't know all the kids in the draft, so am really only picking kids I've read a bit about.
It's pretty much the "he stepped in when Menzel went out" that sparked my interest in him.

Pick 44 - Emmanual Irra
Developing 179cm rebounding backman, definate project player but is the type that could base his game around metres gained and by all account an excellent character off the field. Did consider Ballard with this pick given I don't think the Saints have that much in the way of young developing midfield talent but Irra seems the higher risk/reward play; screw playing it safe.

Doc, I saw him on the Pick Me series and he looks like a great prospect. I dont mind guys with a lot of confidence. Would we look at him at pick 22?

A stretch at 22 IMO, you need to watch a kid a number of times to make the judgement. Highlight packages i take with a grain of salt. Woods biggest issue for me is that he goes missing in games or struggles to have an impact when things aren't going his way. He need time to develop, and get some more consistency in his game. As BM had in the phantom draft I reckon O'Brien (if available) at 22 would be a better candidate.
