Western Bulldogs Specialist Coach Cameron Mooney is imparting more than just tips and tricks on body positioning and forward craft at Whitten Oval – he is also teaching draftee Jake Stringer the importance of adopting good training habits early.

Stringer, who was the Bulldogs’ first selection in the 2012 AFL Draft, has worked closely with the ex-Geelong premiership player in his time at the Kennel and is learning quickly that Mooney demands full commitment in every training drill.

“Train the way you want to play is probably the biggest thing, every time you train at 100%, you normally get the most out of yourself and you are training well,” Stringer said.

“[Cam] just really demanded a… consistent effort through the forward line.

“Not slipping into the holes of the big group [but] trying to stay out the front and demanding a lot out of yourself.”

Stringer has been conscious of the increased intensity at training in the lead up to season proper, as he continues to adjust to the workload of his first AFL pre-season.

Sporting a more streamlined figure, he has already made progress reducing his skinfolds, while still maintaining his strength and power.

“In the last three weeks training has just gone through the roof, with everything – consistency, with the effort, skills, everything,” he said.

Stringer will get his first chance Friday night against Hawthorn, after the talented teenager was given the late call-up to the Bulldogs’ NAB Cup squad following the withdrawal of Dylan Addison through soreness.

The ready built 18-year-old has the ability to make an impact across the ground but has predominantly been training with the forward group this pre-season, as he builds his endurance and running capacity.

His physicality and hunger for the ball will be a big asset for the Bulldogs in coming years, highlighted by his ability to take a strong contested mark but also compete at ground level.

“There’s a lot more to do with one on ones – a lot of one on one contests with the marking then also on the ground, because I’m at that height where it is important for me to be able to compete in the air but also on the ground - so there has been a lot of emphasis on that,” he said.

A country boy who hails from Bendigo, Stringer has transitioned into the Bulldogs playing group with ease and while he is driven by his competitive spirit, he has also found satisfaction in watching his fellow teammates come along over summer.

“You’re working with them but you are also competing against them… you are just trying to tweak little things in your game but also help your teammates out,” he said.

Western Bulldogs top draft pick Jake Stringer will get his first taste of senior football Friday night, with the bullocking 18-year-old called into the Dogs' 27-man NAB Cup squad to face Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium.

After Dylan Addison was withdrawn from the Bulldogs' line-up due to soreness after training this morning, the number five draft pick overall in the 2012 AFL National Draft has been given his opportunity.

Stringer will join fellow top ten draft pick Jackson Macrae in the Dogs' squad, while midfield pick-up Koby Stevens and key defender Jordan Roughead will step out in the red, white and blue for the first time in 2013 on Friday night.

I'm suffering from a serious case of man love here, I don't want to put pressure on the kid but I'm just so excited by this bloke's potential.

I heard about that major injury he had and I hope nothing like this happens to this kid. Barlow from Fremantle who in his first year was going great guns until a serious injury set him back and now he is playing but not as good as he used to be.

I intuited a coach in him. The way he talked about football in his faulted yet charming English showed strength, intelligence and perception.

That's a relief, hope it isn't a bad one.

If Sam Mitchell had gigantism.

HAHA!!!!

For as brief as his time was in the spotlight tonight, he showed the kind of AFL ready presence and natural footy skills we have been sorely looking for. Providing he can stay healthy, I think he is going to play a lot of good football and sooner rather than later.

Ahhhhhhh… that sure was sweet. Only on the park for a couple of minutes and already had the heart racing. Yep, I'm in love. (In a mostly hetero way)

Glad you're able to at least acknowledge the other side of your feelings! :D

Absolute cracker of a goal. The gather was excellent, the side-step and shrug was excellent and the finish was sublime. I have a lot of respect for a player that can adjust the ball position at the last minute to suit his needs. After all of the work he did to get to kick the ball, it was how his thought (not instinct) enabled him to adjust his kick as required.

As for his injury and leaving the ground, I hope it's just precautionary, and he's able to get back into training soon.

God I nearly fell Off the 2nd level at etihad when he done that and dragged my mate down with me :p the way he attacked the ball along wIth Cordy to just get a hand on it, then gather, side step and nail the finish on that angle! I watched it 3 times already and I get more excited every time! Even the commentators lost it when he scored they were lOvIng it! Great game from the young guy very good work even for a shor period! Well done

Let's be positive and take the 4 or 6 and be happy, considering what most of our first thoughts were.

Yep. I initially thought the worse but seeing him jog off I was a bit relieved but now I'm happy it is only 4 to 6 even though does stuff his pre-season up.

I'm sure he has learned to deal with recovery in a positive way after such a rocky road to now.
