I don't understand why we are such clear favourites in the media tipping and with the betting shops.
We win a low scoring close contest - <=12 points.
BOG: Mitch Wallis (completely blankets Ward and picks up 20 possessions himself with 68% disposal accuracy).
First Goal: Tom Young overlaps for a long one at HFF after running off Patton who doesn't bother to follow his opponent.

It can only be the venue I suppose, but without Roughy and an underdone Griffen a buck 60 is way to short for mine.
They have a Powerful strikeforce up forward (we are lucky Devon is out) and without Roughy we are up against it.
Minson is the key if we lose the Ruck we are gone.

Yep. Stringer's handball wasn't ideal but Jongy's butter fingers mean we're a goal further away than we ought to be.

If he hadn't tried to shepherd the Giants player would have mown right through whoever had the ball for us. It was going to be a goal either way.

For professional footballers who are always looking for the smallest advantage I can't understand why modern day footballers try these extravagant kicks for goal. I was always taught to straighten up and kick the ball properly and that kicking the ball around your body was just lazy.

I think that is a given but I loved the way we finished it off. Now it could be a combination of us having a full 7 day break and GWS slogging it out in the wet last week and only having a 6 day break but I'll enjoy the moment and look at things a bit deeper later.

He definitely seems to have clicked. He still looks to be carrying something though. Saw him wince and hobble a few times.
I had to pause the game with us 20 points down, and only just finished watching 15 mins ago.
A fantastic fightback, and great to see the effort that Griffen made as skipper in that last qtr, despite being both carrying an injury into the game, plus the distress he seemed to be in following the fierce tackle he copped in the 3rd. Higgins too, really put the body on the line today in what was in my opinion the best game he's played for a few seasons.
Boyd was also outstanding and kudo's to our undermanned defence. Williams early looked woeful, but after Moz went down, he really stood up, and Young also did well on a much bigger opponent.

Drove me batty as well. Every excuse under the sun offered for us beating them.
The last two weeks there have been trips against us and they received a reprimand
That would be comforting if the MRP were known for their consistency.
Hunter playing like a millionaire.
I've noticed that as well. Needs to knuckle down. Boyd the man for the job there.
Its all these modern footballers who would rather do stupid kicks for goal, they prefer to either roll it along the ground or kick it around the body.
For professional footballers who are always looking for the smallest advantage I can't understand why modern day footballers try these extravagant kicks for goal. I was always taught to straighten up and kick the ball properly and that kicking the ball around your body was just lazy.

Morris copped an injury early when he got his foot tangled with Hoskin-Elliott of GWS early in the 1st qtr. Both players were subbed out with injury from the incident. Was suggested the problem for Dale in his ankle, but may be available next week.
Dahl was out with a calf injury at the original selection.

From memory that is the first time BMAC has actually voiced his frustration so strongly and without any prompting.
What I also took away from the press conference is I think BMAC behind closed doors delivers his message a lot more direct and forceful than he does in the public arena and praise is given out only when deserved. This can only be a good thing.

He also showed that good rebounding form he had last year. Watch the highlight footage of Tutt's sealer. Young was the passer from a stop play (intercepting mark on the wing) and the camera clearly captures his decision making as he looks downfield at the movement out to the pocket (the safe kick option) and then looks to see if anyone has got free in space at high CHF. Spots Tutt moving into the right spot, checks quickly he is not covered and then drills a nice long pass. Game over!

Just finished the replay.
Thought the Giants once again showed themselves to be a club full of wankerish and self entitled kids that need to get their heads knocked off.
Stringer for all the criticism attacked the ball when in defence but used it poorly (as a result of decision making deficiency) and didn't know how to attack toward the carrier when playing forward which says to me he's confused through either not listening to instruction or not being taught properly.
Tutt made an impact irrespective of having limited possessions over three quarters. If he plays four quarters and gains 14-18 touches in a game and kicks a few goals then we have a player, and he should keep his spot.
Williams played and excellent game and is probably our best key defender when in form.
Easton Wood is going to be a good player for us.
Wallis playing tight whilst also getting the ball goes a long way towards us winning.
If all of the above happen our midfield not dominating the game for the whole game in contested possession isn't going to be a massive issue.
Higgins is a gun. Irrespective of his weaknesses (every player has them, bar maybe one or two in history) he is still a player if I was a coach I'd look at as the top three or four Bulldogs to stop if I was matching up against them.
Our first two to three weeks were very very difficult from a fatigue perspective. We are a list that has had a good development preseason put into us and we'll be a lot fitter than we were last year.
Crameri is going to be a good pick up for us, and Liam Jones will benefit from it if he keeps working.
Liam Picken has more than once in recent times made me eat roast words with all the trimmings throughout the week due to very good match ups producing good performances.

Good write up Jeemak. Just one thing.

Morris is our best defender, first and foremost.
Williams for mine if able to benefit from continuity is our best chance against the taller and more mobile forwards compared to Roughead.
This week I was really pleased with how he attacked the high ball and the ground level contests compared to last week when he was clearly underdone and lacking confidence.
It's a hard comparison to make though. Neither have been on the ground long enough to swap opponents etc. throughout a season to see who matches up against best against opposition teams forwards throughout games.
Roughead in all likelihood is going to turn out better as a key back, but he doesn't have William's athletic ability and he never will. If he can keep his head together, and make sure he comes back from injury the same player that he was prior to being injured (which is a thing Williams has struggled with) then he'll be the better defender.

Persuasive post and you're right about athletic ability. What I was really impressed with Tom's game on Saturday was he able to come back from a fairly poor game the week before and he stood up and helped cover for Morris absence. If we could get the Tom Williams who went with Buddy in Tassie all those years ago back I will be very happy.

Agree but Roughy's strength is his body to body work which allows him to make good decisions as to when he should spoil and when he should take the mark. He struggles most on leading players...which is understandable to some extent considering he is a ruckman turned into a defender. Williams is the opposite.....struggles body to body but his mobility is an asset.

One thing I hate about Williams is when the ball is coming in high, he has his eyes on the man till the last minute and then he seems to lose the contest. Yes you have to know where your man is but, eyes should be on the ball and you should be trying to punch or mark it.

This was certainly as issue in the Richmond game, but seemed to improve markedly in the GWS match (although I only had TV coverage to judge it from). I believe it is more a confidence issue. Williams can take a mark, just needs confidence to play the ball on its merits.

It was easily Williams' best game as a defender IMO.
He's a good player (could have been better with no injuries) but I still think he's more instinctive as a forward. As others have noted, he struggles reading the play whilst keeping track of his man in defense, meaning he's often out of position or easily out bodied. Cameron helped him last week in that he simply just kept presenting straight at the ball. He didn't really test out Williams' weaknesses (eg. lateral movements and getting him underneath the ball, or repeat leads).
We certainly need Tommy to stand up as a defender whilst Roughy is out, but long term if he stays injury free, I think Williams can split his time evenly between forward/back depending on where we need him most and how the likes of Roughy/Morris/Talia and Campbell/Jones are playing.
