Hi there,

I'm just wondering if anyone here on the forum could put me in the right direction. I was hoping to get a couple of questions answered about some relatives of mine that played for Footscray in the '20's and '30's. Would anyone happen to have an email address of a Footscray historian who may be able assist with some quick historical questions?

Cheers!

Mick

Sorry Mick, can't help. Would the club or local council have anything?

If it's just games or goals, wikipedia seems to be ok up until about 10 years ago.

Perhaps name the players here and you never ever know, someones Dad or granddad may have told them a story or two about the players in question.

Thanks for your help gents,

I have been able to find games, goals etc from AFL tables and the Footy club have been great in what they have been able to provide me with.

The relatives are brothers; Jack,Ted and Bill Sherman and they played from 1925 - 1933. The questions I have is that from what I have found, Jack was originally named as "19th man" in the 1924 "Championship of Victoria" match. Did Jack Sherman play any games in the 1924 season including the 1924 VFA Grand Final? and Did Jack take the field in the 1924 Championship of Victoria game and if so, who did he replace in the team?

Family belief is that he did take the field but he is not mentioned in any of the following match reports on Trove so its been very difficult to verify or find any detail about how he played.

There's also several stories on Trove about how the VFA refused to award the players with premiership medals due to the fact they had already the players with premiership caps and that the local Footscray businessmen had already given the players their own medals on behalf of the city. These medals from what I have found, were round with a blue flag and written in it "Victorian Football Champions".

So my third question is; Did the VFA cave in and give the players an official premiership medal and are there any pics or details of what they looked like?

A lot of questions I know but would love to know as I haven't been able to uncover these details!

Cheers,

Mick

Thanks Twodogs I have seen this team photo, which adds to more intrigue that there isn't a "Sherman" shown in the team.

I've had a look through Unleashed and there is a picture of a team with your grandad on page 97. I can't upload it though.

As far as the Championship game V Essendon goes I can't see any reference to him playing. The 19th man wasn't introduced until 1930 though.

You might come up empty, but a great site for this kind of thing (and a lot of other cool tid bits) is this site:

www.boylesfootballphotos.net.au/

I've found it really useful. A lot of interesting photos of old teams, individual players, the WO and even the Dogs at Yarraville Oval during WW2.

I checked Boyles Webby but couldn't find a Jack Sherman. It's still well worth having a look through though. Great site.

Thanks everyone for your links and info, some great information there! Unfortunately still unable to verify if Jack actually took the field in the Championship of Victoria match. I've even gone to the length of reading all available match reports on Trove and ticking off each player from the named team. All players are mentioned in the match reports except for Jack Meuleman, Bill McIntyre and Frank Nielsen. Hopefully some info comes to light, its been very pain staking! Thanks again all.

Spent the afternoon having a dig around. Read match reports, the cheating controversy, looked plenty of places. Just no mention of Sherman.

I dunno if this is any good but I found it on my travels around the net;

461

Depending on whether the year mentioned at the top is 1910 or 1918 it could be a photo of Jacks's junior team.

The two blokes front and centre-the one holding the footy and the one next to him could almost be wearing Footscray jumpers too.

Thanks everyone. I do have a copy of this pic, its from the Museum Victoria website. The year is 1918 when the family arrived in Chillingollah. I believe in 1924, Jack made his way down to Melbourne. A great photo!
