Can someone tell Turner to shut the hell up? We don't want to have to use another first round pick on a Cordy!
GEELONG Falcons talent manager Michael Turner has declared Western Bulldogs father-son prospect Zaine Cordy as one of the best defenders he's seen at the club.
Cordy, the brother of Bulldogs forward Ayce and the son of Brian, is a versatile and athletic key defender, and will likely be the Bulldogs' top pick of the four father-son prospects eligible for this year's draft.
This is Turner's 20th year at the Falcons, which has been a fertile breeding ground for AFL clubs.
Falcons' alumni include the likes of Geelong premiership full-back Matthew Scarlett, Hawthorn skipper Luke Hodge, West Coast defender Will Schofield, and Brisbane Lions defenders Matt Maguire and Darcy Gardiner, the latter taken at pick 22 in last year's draft.
Turner told AFL.com.au Cordy ranks up there with some of the most talented defenders recruited from the Falcons.
"I would say the Western Bulldogs would have to give up a fairly early pick to grab him under father-son," Turner said.
"I rate him really highly. I've been doing this job for a really long time, and he is one of the best defenders I've had.
"He has all the attributes to play AFL footy, there's no doubt about that."
Last Friday night, Cordy was handed the challenge of playing on potential number one draft pick, Peter Wright.
The Calder Cannons forward kicked six goals against Cordy, but Turner said he was impressed with the young defender's overall effort.
"Wright kicked a couple of goals at the end that were little dribblers and not really Zaine's fault, but I watched his efforts on the computer and he was absolutely outstanding," Turner said.
"He fought fantastically against Peter Wright. Every contest I watched, he never lost in a one-on-one contest, he punched the ball away and did a lot of good blocking."
Playing alongside Wright at the Calder Cannons is Josh Wallis, son of former Bulldogs' captain Stephen, and brother of Mitch.
Cannons talent manager Ian Kyte told AFL.com.au the 17-year-old midfielder was hampered by a quad injury in the pre-season, and will need to improve his aerobic endurance to compete at the level required for TAC Cup.
"He's very strong-bodied and has a really good understanding of the game," Kyte said.
"He doesn't have the same natural ability as Mitch and he's probably going to have to work a lot harder.
"But with hard work, the possibilities could be endless if he tried to have a real go, which he seems to be doing this year."
Luke Kennedy, son of Rick, and Jayden Foster, son of Peter, are also at the Calder Cannons as top-age players.
Foster, who will turn 19 this year, was overlooked in the 2013 draft after a horror run of injuries, but the late bloomer has impressed Kyte this season.
Foster will be given an opportunity to show his wares as a key forward in the VFL for Coburg in the coming weeks.
"He showed us over the last couple of weeks that he's got the capabilities to go on and play at a higher level," Kyte said.
"I think he's going to be a top prospect by the end of the year for the Bulldogs or for any other club that might be interested."
Western Bulldogs recruiting manager Simon Dalrymple confirmed the Bulldogs are keeping a close watch on all four players, with each of them spending time at the club's father-son academy.

Zaine is pretty exciting, but at the next level I don't see him anything like a KPP. From what I saw last week he can play on perhaps a third tall, go third up and create in an attacking role.
But all said, Turner and Co need to say these things , but unless things change, he is unlikely to go top 5. But a Brisbane or Sajnts might want him second round. All depends what happens with our season and the boys seasons.

I thought for a moment you and Zaine where one in the same when I saw the picture in the article!
Now that would be In-Zaine in the Brian

How tall is Zaine BT?

Turner has never had a player who wasn't a potential Brownlow winner. Take it with a grain of salt.

Lets not get too excited. This has happened before:
"From what I've seen of Ayce, if he's not a top-five draft pick, I'm a bad judge." - Michael Turner
Here's the full very optimistic article. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ayce-in-the-pocket-if-dogs-play-cards-right/story-e6frf9jf-1111115938641

From memory about 189 cm which I think was what his Dad came in at. but I may be off thd mark there. Certainly much shorter than Ayce.

Yeah Brian and Zaine as per posts above.

Yeah, Brian was about 6 foot 1inch or 6ft 2in. A classic 3rd defender, so maybe Zaine's a smidge bigger.
Turner is optimistic in thinking 189cm defenders are top 5 pick candidates. I absolutely despise Sht Kilda for forcing us to use our top pick on Ayce. In my mind they did that simply to fk us around. It was sooo galling that we had pick 14 and every club with the first dozen picks in the '08 draft passed on him. We only needed The 'Aints to pass with pick 13 and that'd have meant we could've used 14 on a Schoenmakers or a Beames or whoever and nabbed Ayce with our second round pick...
Instead, we got no Father-Son advantage due to those useless pr1cks from Moorabbin.

Nah, Zaine is about 193cm gents, from memory the record had him down as 191cm last year (but lets not go on what says how tall players are actually! :) ). He's a tall kid, the tallest defender last week, but nothing like Ayce. Against Wright last week he looked tiny but he's tall enough at TAC Cup level to cover a KPP post, but unless he gets a growth spurt I think he's a good 3rd tall defender at AFL level but his attacking side is very good too. One thing that I notice is that his arms seems too long for his torso to my eyes, which is maybe why he's such a good spoiler. But it could be just me that sees that.
No point putting too much hype on him prior to champs, but I've been a fan for a while.

Hopefully he wins a few brownlows, and Mick Turner is looking like a bad judge in regards to Ayce.

I think it's just how it works that the team with the pick immediately before the to-be father-son pick makes a bid. It's not necessarily an indication of where he would have gone. If I recall, he was talked up as a top-5 pick.
To reinforce the point, Sydney bid for Libber with the pick immediately before our second rounder. That doesn't mean Libber wouldn't have definitely been a first rounder, they and every other club just knew that we'd be taking him no matter what.

Will be interesting when clubs start passing on guys and clubs get stung both ways, will happen soon.

Agreed, i don't think you'd run the risk of trying to make a club overpay for a FS out of spite, only for the club to then call your bluff and you're stuck.

Aza, if you keep the man love for Zaine going at this rate I might have to consider you for promotion, Twodogs should be all over this. I'm not sure if Westdog 54 formally took the secretary position as well.

He certainly has the vernacular down pat!: "Yeah, nah."
I can see him alongside Roberts, Roughie and Talia in years to come. I just hope we can get him at some value.

I think Paige and Callum are putting out false impressions in a good way. At TAC level he's a KPP, but not at the next unless he gets a growth spurt he's a utility and in my mind he's coming in to get the spot Wood has and for which Young covets. I'm quite the fan, quiet obviously, but our members ought not to think he's replacing Morris or a CHB.

Definitely not holding out for a Morris. Half back flanker who can play tall if needed, good at ground level with good foot skills - that's what I'm after... If I'm looking at someone to be the new Morris, I'm pipe dreaming about Jayden Foster.
If he's got anything like his old man's frame and work ethic, he'll do me!

For me, if anyone says name one thing you like about Zaine, I'd say his disposal. Obviously speed, time and pressure at the next level tests everyone, but I'm hopeful. As for Jayden, he has some tricks and is kicking multiple goals every game. I'm pipe dreaming with you, Calder should go deep into finals so he has some time to demand our attention.

Looks good one on one as well, and as a second or third tall.

He kicked 5 the match before this weekend's bag of 4. I'm looking forward to watching him once or twice again during the last half of the season. Maybe he makes it or maybe he doesn't, but its fun to think about even more father sons, especially a big full forward one. I so hate Essendon getting Daniher!!

Yep. If no one bids on him in the F/S process at year's end, I think Will Langford at Hawthorn was one such example.
If I'm to believe Twodogs Fosters genes are starting to ripen a little later. Watch this space I guess??

So the bidding process is only for the national draft, then if he's not nominated there it's open slather in the rookie draft?

The Father-Son Rule previously applied to players selected at the National Draft. Under the rule, other AFL clubs can bid for eligible players who have been nominated under the Father-Son Rule by an eligible club. The nominating club can select the eligible player by forfeiting its next available pick in the draft if a bid has been made by another club. If there is no bid from another club, the nominating club forfeits its last pick in the National Draft.
A club can pre-select an eligible player as a Category A rookie between the Pre-Season and Rookie Drafts (with the player’s consent) provided the player had nominated for but was not selected by another club at either the National or Pre-Season Drafts. In that case, the relevant club would forfeit its last available selection in the Rookie Draft to take the player.

Thanks, that clears it up. Bit of a risk not to nominate him for the ND then, safer to put his name up and just use our last pick if no-one else wants him. Though I guess those sort of risks are part and parcel of being a recruiter, and it comes down to how good we think he will be

We will see I guess. He had a bad foot injury last year which kept him out for much of the year. If that re-occurs then who knows what will happens.
