The Hees will be psychologically unprepared for the match as they have assumed this one is in the bag and are concentrating on preparing for their flag tilt in September.

You don't think a five week purple patch won't influence what sort of contract other clubs may offer him? Clubs get swayed all the time.

Really tough day, struggling for match ups around the ground and our disposal hasn't done us any favours.
Better second from Campbell who contested well but missed a couple he probably should've taken.
Our finishing has been poor too, Stringer, Dahl and Hunter missing shots they should make.
Hope we keep our heads up and don't go down by 10 goals.

I agree with you, but it's salt in the wound.........I just can't understand how someone can play for a footy club their whole career and not be biased, if anything he goes the other way. Lingy is still unashamedly favourable towards the Cats, I don't resent him for it, it's completely natural. Darcy is only worried about how much money he can make, and that means hamming it up for the big clubs or sitting on the fence. When do you hear him on the Hot Breakfast being as vociferous about the Doggies as Eddie or Mick are about the Pies or the Tigers? That's fine it's his prerogative, but he like his Pubs are gradually moving East, so for mine he can keep his helicopter away from WO.

I think that he has been worse, the other backmen seem to have caught his fall-over-at-the-contest disease. The rationale must be that if you fall over at the contest then losing it probably wasn't your fault. I think that it is Austin's strong point.

While it was a disappointing afternoon watching that game I thought for 3 quarters we fought very well. We certainly were making them work hard and at one stage they actually were struggling to score. Griff was good along with Libba. Murph is just a champ and I'm so glad we signed him on for another year. Morris works hard as always. The game was a good test for our youngsters against a strong team and they will only learn and improve from that experience. Campbell was an important presence up forward. The final term was obviously really bad. So all in all despite a big loss it wasn't all negative.

Good thoughts Eastdog. We should have been a lot closer at three quarter time, having missed too many shots at goal. The final term was very disappointing however, which showed up our inability to match a quality team like Hawthorn for the entire match. Campbell did give us a presence up forward and will be even better being given more time in the ruck. We still lack another KPF and KPD and would like to see Jones and Roberts played next week. I am beginning to doubt the wisdom in playing Cooney and Higgins.

I agree, didn't think it was all bad. I stopped watching half way through the third qtr when we got as close as we got all day (had to go out), so missed the horror of the last bit. Wasn't too surprised at how it ended up though, you could see it coming. Teams are scoring too easily against us, appears to be even easier than early in the year which is a ral concern. Also thought some of the young guys were showing their age a bit today.... shown up by the bigger bodies and experience of the hawks.
But for all that we had our chances and looked pretty dangerous at times, if only we'd taken some of the chances.
Also enjoyed big tom grabbing a couple of big marks.

Yep we missed a lot of opportunities when the match was even and could of capitalised and gave them a scare but it wasn't to be. That head start we gave them in the 1st quarter did not help us. Would have been more of chance if it was more even on the scoreboard at quarter time.

Murphy and Morris have both signed on again for next year and Gia will be retiring.
Absolutely of course. What about Cooney, Higgins and Boyd. Coons such a shame that his retirement will most likely be earlier than he expected.

Only watched teh first today but really disappointing. I can only recall being belted a couple of other times this year and with 2 of Hawthorn's better players out before the game started I thought we'd put in a good fight.
Without knowing anything about the game and just looking at bests and goals on the Web site. Our backline is a big concern? That's 14 goals from KPF in 2 matches. We've got to get some help in there fast.

Morris is great and all down there for experience but yeah other than Roughead who else will have a future with us down there. Can you see Austin staying?

Cooney's got knee issues which are chronic, and unless he can miraculously be rebuilt, he needs to be retired.

Beg to differ. He was a non-factor the whole match, especially early on where this game was basically won and lost. We should be expecting much more from our AA ruckman.
He smashed big boy in hit outs which really is his core role. McEvoy just took more marks around the ground as per usual which always dolls him up.

I thought Austin, the former Blue, battled hard. Austin, the former Blue, showed genuine emotion whenever Roughy kicked a goal late. It was great to see Campbell, who kicked 9 goals in his last five games in 2013, back in the team. Campbell, who kicked 9 goals in his last five games in 2013, provided a tall target deep in the forwardline.

I thought Austin was better than Roughy yesterday - Hawks' plan was to drag Roughy away from goal then exploit his lack of athleticism worked well.
It's a worry that other teams will do this as well - especially those that have three or more legitimate marking options.

The logical move is that Roughead just stays with the deepest one and if they leave the forward 50 he swaps with another key defender. Sides used to try and drag Lake out of defence and he would just swap to whoever they put there instead. I'm more worried that atm when he is one on one deep in defence he is too worried about his opponent. I'd like him to just attack the ball and back himself in to win it with his reach.

That game didn't even need to happen. Total paint by numbers affair where no one showed anything we didn't already know, or just served to create disappointment.
Cooney looks done, I'm not willing to call him a pussy or a one way passenger or whatever but it's plain to see he is too limited physically to play a full season. Austin playing and Talia/Roberts not is a disgrace; cracking it (as opposed to cracking in) because no one gets back to help cover a two on one is fair, but cracking it when you get beaten badly despite having position A because you thought it made you look committed the last time you did it is petulant and altogether too Brett Thorntonish to play AFL.
Minson is not the problem.
Griffen was good I guess. Picken too. Crameri's still fat. Footy sucks again.

Actually Hawthorn won the hitouts 44 to 43. Minno really should be toying with an opponent like McEvoy in his core role but that wasn't the case yesterday.
In any event we got smashed in the clearances which suggests to me that he was ineffective with his hitouts. And we all know he was ineffective around the ground. Right here and now, Campbell has far more strings to his bow elsewhere around the ground - Minson really need to lift.

Watching the replay now and had to mention what the hell was going on with Roughead's fourth goal? That is some of the most shambolic defending I've ever seen. Being caught on the break is one thing but the amount of space and loose men they had in the forward 50 is astounding, not to mention the Hawks kicker took the wrong option into the forward 50 but our ridiculous defending in the marking contest gave up the goal anyway.
It's just one passage of play but I had to mention it for how seriously putrid it was.

There is no real leadership in the back half. Our Roughead has a long way to go and maybe playing with his confidence shot. We need a general in the backline.

Yes but the point is he did. Hale got hold of a heap of hit outs which skews the overall numbers. Point is Minson got hold of big boy at stoppages and was in most reporters bests.

People should watch the second quarter again. I was impressed that after a poor first quarter Will absolutely dominated McEvoy, forcing Hale to spend more time in the ruck. Libba was the benefit of much of Will's work.

Is Morris not the general? Murphy?
If you ever hear the defenders speaking either in media or in the social club before games, they regularly talk about the leadership of Morris and Murphy down back.

Well it was a bit of a mess against the Hawks, so not working.

Agree, his confidence is shot at the moment. I still think he is effected by the shoulder injury.

Yeah they're not mutually exclusive. Upper body injuries are bad for football because there is just so much constant contact there - JJ still hasn't recovered mentally. Roughie's confidence is down and he is either sore of has no confidence in his shoulder or both. Just my take.

I don't really agree with this. The backmen made a couple of blues, but overall I thought Hawthorn's scoring was mostly generated from smashing us in the stoppages and getting the ball in the hands of their good ball users who had way too much time and space.
It is extremely difficult to defend the likes of Roughead and Gunston when the ball is coming in with very little pressure up field.
We also got burnt from turnovers - poor kicks from Higgins, Cooney and Macrae (just as a few examples) led to easy Hawthorn goals.
In the last quarter - we simply couldn't get through the Hawthorn zone and the repeat entries resulted in the game being blown out like it was.

That is the impression I get too. Nearly every match there are times where he winces in pain and is very slow to get off the deck.

Yep, if we had that sort of discrepancy in clearances and CP's this time last year that would have been a 20 goal loss. That was probably the worst performance in those key indicators by our midfield all season (possibly the Carlton game as well). Roughy and Austin were given no support and had to compete one-on-one as a result.
