"The Western Bulldogs confirm that we have been informed by Tom Boyd’s management, Precision Sports and Entertainment Group, that he will seek a trade from Greater Western Sydney to continue his career with the Western Bulldogs.

The Western Bulldogs have communicated to GWS that we are prepared to achieve this outcome through a direct trade for Ryan Griffen.

We will now work with the Giants to do a fair deal in the interests of all parties during the trade period"

The Giants immediately tweeting Boyd will not be traded "under any circumstances".

Let the posturing begin.

Safe to assume it's going to be Griffen + ?

But what exactly?

Well as Griff's situation indicated, If a player does not want to play for club, it usually means they will be traded. So I am very, very hopeful this gets done.

If it does, I hope this is remembered as the 'Griffen / McCartney trade'.

Griffen and a player would be what they'd want. Losing Boyd would mean they need to draft another KPP this year so pick 4 will be out of the equation.

Too good to be true. I think they mean that Griff goes to GWS and we can sign Matty Boyd to another year extension.

GWS on AFL website saying they won't trade Tom Boyd under any circumstances.

They say they've told the Bulldogs that already.

"We have been clear with them that despite any speculation or interest, Tom Boyd will not be traded under any circumstances, Giants CEO David Matthews said in a statement,

"With pick four and potentially another high first-round selection we are confident we are in a strong trade position as we enter the week."

I'm sure this is legit, we would have simply made him an offer too good to refuse. Now for the trade, I'll go with Griffen & 5 for Boyd and 7...........sold, and legitimately fair IMO. GWS have a glut of KPF and there is no way they can afford to keep them all, this trade will get up!

And I love Ryan Griffen again.

I never stopped loving him. It's like that lecture from your Dad that was the worst one of all: "I'm not angry at you son, I'm just disappointed."

Honestly I'd be amazed if we got a straight swap. I'm sure my opinion will be disagreed with but I think that with the comparative stages of their careers, in my mind Boyd simply holds more value, which gives them greater leverage.

I hope I'm reading it wrong, but that's the way I see it.

Holy crap having Tom Boyd could be like the second coming.

Ozza
13-10-2014, 11:58 AM
I don't think we can expect a straight swap. We will have to sweeten it some way.

Tom Boyd is in high demand. Last years no.1 pick, 200cm+ key forward who (potentially) becomes a franchise player.

Regardless of him being unproven, he is a rare commodity, and a 10+ year player.

There is no way on an open market, that Griffen is worth as much or more than Tom Boyd. It might seem crazy when you look at Griffen's career output - but its the reality.

If we get the deal done for a straight swap - it is a terrific deal.

jeemak
13-10-2014, 12:00 PM
Griffen worth more than straight swap, Boyd unproven so we want Boyd plus pick 4.

I can't see that happening.

Nobody would swap pick one for Griffen, so I don't see how we'd secure last year's pick one plus pick four for Griffen.

I think the proven performer in Griffen holds more value than the unproven Boyd at the present time. GWS won't be thinking this way. We have to put doubt in there minds so we can come out of this trade well on top. We lost our captain for goodness sake. I would be giving them examples of Kepler Bradley, Scott Gumbleton, Richard Tambling, Tom Scully ( and they know too well about his talents) as pure examples of top draft picks are all potential and not a known quantity.

Similar to what PG was saying about Griff last week. He's a required player and will be seeing out his contract...

I love the face slap same almost word for word response we said last week they are saying it this week. GOLD !!!

I pray this trade is done and whatever happens I applaud the club for being proactive after being so rocked to the core last week. BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO.

I was driving when I heard this and was WHOOPING & HOLLERING on way home - the other drivers must have thought I was a stark raving loony.

I think we know we are a long shot to make it happen but it does send a strong signal to GWS to come through with a great offer.

At the very least Boyd is now on record that he wants to come to us. Maybe we have to wait another 12 months when he is out of contract.

I agree with this. You have to give it the best shot you have got although there are no guarantees. It means if we don't get Boyd GWS will be tempted to have to give us overs to get Griffen.

Surely Boyd saying he wants to be a Dog makes a big difference. I like that he wants to lead and be the main man at a club rather than a junior partner to Patton/Cameron. Also surely GWS would be daft not to do it - they still have Tomlinson, McCarthy etc. Really for mine the reason they kept loading up on big guys was in part coz they knew one at least would want out or alternately they cold use one to get a Griffen like player.

The Bulldogs Bite

GWS would be stupid to hold this up.

It hurts them losing Boyd undoubtedly, but the reality is they still have Cameron, McCarthy, Stewart, Tomlinson, Patton (inj) on their list and if they want they could take McCartin/Wright at Pick 4. This isn't even mentioning the strong possibility Boyd would walk to us/St. Kilda next year, nor the commitment they've made to Griffen.

I think it looks simple for GWS.

Gain: Griffen & McCartin/Wright

I wonder what has been said between Boyd and GWS now.

If Boyd spat the dummy and said "I'm leaving next year whatever happens" then

1. GWS hang onto him hoping to change their mind, OR

2. They trade him now to us, OR

3. They put him onto the open market now, OR

4. They hold off for a big trade next year. Big danger is that the bottom 3 in 2015 will likely be Victorian clubs, with the first 3 PSD picks.

I'll high five Griff, pack his bags for him, offer to drive him to the airport and send him off with a saliva free coffee if this goes through.

Ryan is a great player but at this point, I know who I would much rather. Midfielders are easier to find, and reality is, Griff isn't in the class of Ablett/Swan/Pendlebury/Watson anyway.

Surely no administration, especially one that's been as battered as this one over the past few days, would trumpet this news if they think it's only 50/50. This is interesting, we have also made enquires about Cameron:

The Giants have been told Boyd has been offered a "very long-term" multimillion-dollar deal to join the Bulldogs, who are prepared to trade their captain, Ryan Griffen, in an exchange. The Giants have insisted they will not trade their young key forward, who is contracted for next year only. Club officials believe there would be an auction of all Victorian clubs at the end of next year if we Boyd still wanted to return home then and that the compensation in those circumstances would likely be greater than it is now.
The Bulldogs have long been eyeing all three of the GWS' big forwards – Boyd, Jonathon Patton and Jeremy Cameron.
They have previously made overtures to both Patton and Cameron for long-term deals. Patton was made an informal six-year offer to move, while Cameron was given indications of what an offer might look like were he prepared to entertain further negotiations.

GWS then on trade pick 6 + pick 4 to Saints for pick 1

GWS get Petracca (who they are reportedly really keen on) as well as Griffen

The Saints getting involved turns it into an auction.

They'll offer pick 1 - which will increase what GWS can expect from us.

It screws us a bit in the negotiations, and confirms that what they (GWS) have has a much higher market appeal than what we have.

Sht Kilda being pests yet again!

You know, I hate to be a party pooper, but I'm not sure I like the idea of trading Griffen plus pick 6 for Boyd...
I'd prefer picks 4 & 6 to just Boyd...

For some context, picks 4 & 6 in last year's draft would've netted us Bontempelli and Aish, whilst the same two picks the year before would've landed us Stringer & Macrae..

This might all be a ruse to net pick 4 from them... And maybe a player. Pick 4 could land McCartin or Wright. I'd be pretty happy with that. Then pick 6 for another good kid... Point is, Boyd is not the be all and end all. We're in a good position as of today. No need to panic and be suckered into paying overs..

Extremely excited about the prospect of snagging Boyd but am cautious about Gordon and Alberti making statements and seemingly conducting our on-field strategy. I'd prefer it was Monty, J-Mac, Lowe or even Chris Grant coming out and talking football matters. Apart from Eddie very rarely does a President come out with statements about what happens on-field, it's one of the things James Brayshaw does well, makes zero comment and doesn't pretend to be an expert in what the coaching staff are trying to do on-field. Look how well the alternative worked out for Jeff Kennett...

Gordon is obviously trying to drum up some much needed enthusiasm but his expertise is in law and administration, Lowe is the footy manager and Chris Grant is the greatest players we've produced in 30 years...I'd rather hear it from them.

Not really. He's under contract, a contracted player can't be traded to a club against their will. All we need is for Boyd to declare he will not be traded to St Kilda. That then immediately rules them out and GWS have to move on. They can talk about St Kilda as much as they like, but it's hollow if Boyd's management rules them out.

Its posturing. After the bombshell of last week and the collateral damage that went with it, the fightback by targeting Boyd is all about regaining credibility with the football world for not just the club, but its key management figures.

I am sceptical that the deal will get done, but I like the fact that we haven't laid down and just accepted Griff walking out.

To be fair, with the events of the last week we are not exactly in a business as usual situation. PG has obviously made the call that he needs be on the front foot in a very public fashion.

If we end up getting Boyd at our club I couldn't give a shit if Woofer negotiated the deal.

Someone has to show leadership. I am sure JMac is the one negotiating.

Then it shouldn't be President to President it should be the President endorsing the list manager as having his total support to get a deal done.

Dogs get - Boyd, pick 19, a packet of Schmackos and an old sock

He hasn't scouted the TAC cup though, or monitored the development of Tom Boyd, or examined our structures and noted whether Boyd would fit in, or balanced our future player payments and salary cap, or undertaken a medical on Boyd. This is a football issue and with all due respect the last person I want to hear from is Gordon because it simply isn't a hat he should be wearing. What I want to know as a paying member, is that the footy department isn't being run blindly while in the midst of one of the most important periods in our recent history.

He's big boss man on the front foot. Thank goodness we finally have a leader prepared to do it. He's been briefed by Jmac, Dalrymple, Granty and he's not stupid. He knows it's all out with Boyd. I'm sure Jmac, Dalrymple et al. don't want to field the abundance of questions their not qualified to answer. Given the turmoil of the past week it's impossible to narrow down a discussion about just 'Boyd'. The best person to discuss all of this is Gordon.

Agreed.

Amazed people complaining about PG showing leadership and leading from the front.

People complain if you do or don't - you can't win. It's not as though JMac is sitting on his hands.

Totally agree BTT. This commitment from Boyd would have been weeks if not months in the making, JMac would have been doing all of it behind the scenes. Once we secured Boyd's commitment PG obviously feels given how public the situation has been that it's better he be the public face of negotiations. I don't have any issue with that.

Also, do you think GWS heard about it and decided to put feelers out with Griffen, sort of an eye for an eye.

I don't mind the stance Gordon is taking, yes it's different but it's not everyday your club is in its knees after a few horrendous days, he's out there fighting for this club and being strong and direct which is exactly the best for our supporter base imho.

At the end of the day if or when we land Boyd or another great deal to shift Griff off to GWS, our supporter base will know the club had faught tooth and nail to improve the list and club the best way possible.

Absolutely, he's as well credentialed as any Supreme Court Judge. If he wasn't our President he'd be sounded out for sure. His keeps winning enormous class actions one after another. I think some might not understand just what he's achieved in his legal career. Read his bio on gordonlegal.com.au - anyway Tom Boyd is coming and we're talking about this. If the Boyd trade request is news to GWS - surely it's no surprise they have jumped at a deal yet?

It will take time - they are probably posturing as much as we were last Thursday by saying Griff will stay.

Shit just got real for them and their fans. They are coming to the realization that Boyd will be out of there, if not now, then certainly at the end of next year.

Im not sure that their statement that they would stand to get more in a free-for-all auction next year is valid... its never a free-for-all... the player concerned nominates a club and then they are forced to deal with that club.

Our opening gambit is straight-swap, theirs is no deal at all. Somewhere in the middle is grif + fancy steak knives.

This is often the case. Player Managers are very powerful nowadays and the high profile ones especially so.

GWS, once the emotion settles, will have to play the game as they will inevitably attempt to recruit a Pickering managed player or a draftee he will have the management rights to in the future. So I'm sure Pickers will tell them to play nice.

That would be cool but... Player #16 + pick 6 is too much for Boyd. I feel the same with #16 + 26 + 27. The impact for us with the number of players coming off the list (6 retired, delisted or traded so far) would mean that 3 players would have to be recruited through picks 45, 84 (64 committed to Zaine Cordy) and 100 with 118 being used for Jong's promotion. An alternative would be to go the delisted free agency path or the pre-season draft.

That's my concern and why I would prefer to go to the draft with 4, 6, 26, 27 & 45 free to be used, plus a former 1st round draft pick young KPF from GWS. This of course entails that we delist another 2 players - which I think we can do.

Agree fully with your sentiments, could come down to do we want to get the trade done or not. It is a risk granted, but we have never had a major trade in the draft trade era of the AFL

personally can not see Boyd at the dogs next season but sometimes in order to succeed you takes risks. We will get a trade for Cooney and if Carlton really do want Jones a chance there to.

For me, perhaps Boyd + another young largely untried KP player former first round/early second round pick for Griffen + pick 6 or Griffen + 26 & 27. Griffen is a massive loss, one of the best midfielders in the comp and a great gain for any other team, particularly one in the situation GWS is in. There is no way you could say Boyd is worth 2x Griffen and I am a bit concerned some of the suggestions head too far in this direction. So, something like Boyd + Stewart for Griffen + pick 6.

F'scary
13-10-2014, 10:48 PM
At the moment, my preference is to load up for the draft so instead of Boyd for Griffen + way overs, I would prefer Griffen for pick 4, a young KPF recent high draft pick (just as good as another pick around 15-25) plus steak knives that are better than Pearce or Tutt.

I could perhaps be brought around to it, although I would expect something else in return. I do feel that this scenario comes 12 months too early - our list would really benefit from another 2 (maybe 3 if GWS handed over #7) quality young players as opposed to one.

Griff & 6 for Boyd seems far too much.
Straight swap, just a bit over for them.
Packaging other players seems messy.
Maybe swapping a few picks would balance it out.

What about the look to a playing group of having their captain talking to another club for half of the season? They want to have their cake and eat it too, they can get stuffed.

The footballing industry is only looking at Ryan Griffen the Footballer versus Tom Boyd the Footballer. They're not looking at the circumstances around this event, the other factors involved, it's a heck more complex than a simple tit-for-tat trade.

Hmmm, yeah sure you are

I think we all need this deal to get done, so we can all go back to work :D
Just this 1 deal can turn this crap trade period into one of the best ever....

We need to keep pick six. Simple as that, so for me a swap with griff and a second rounder is the go. Failing that, we will take pick 4 and 7 for griff, then we go for Boyd next year. We hold all the cards here.

As mr burns would say "excellent"

That's the way I see it too. If they hang Griffen out to dry on this they'll struggle to attract top end talent to the club. They will have demonstrated that they aren't prepared to do what it takes to accommodate a player who is seeking to join them.

They can't have their cake and eat it it too.

As for Ryan, well, he abandoned us. Not the other way around.

Agreed, this is the approach.

Given the above aren't we now hanging Boyd out to dry If we don't secure him? GWS now know he doesn't want to be there so I think they'll try to orchestrate a trade as they know they'll lose him next year anyway. He simply doesn't want to be there. We need to consider Boyd in all of this, he's put himself on the line and it will bs extremely difficult for him to return to the club / team mates after effectively stating he doesn't want to be at the club anymore. By going hard at him we've screwed pick 6 and we know it. I'm ok with that.

Boyds Manager would have known how this is likely to play out. All we can do is make a great offer, get him to agree to is and then have something of similar value to offer GWS as compensation. We have done everything we can.

I don't believe we will offer pick 6 on top of that unless we are getting something else like a decent player back.

We almost want Boyd to come out again and say - if you don't trade me this year I will not re-sign and GWS will lose me for nothing in 12 months time.

Yeah I won't celebrate until it's official. A lot of water to go under the bridge.

I'm the same. I loved the balls of the club to go back at GWS in that manner but (and maybe this is the Bulldog supporter in me) I'm leaning well towards this not coming off then thinking it will.
