Disapora

A diaspora (from Greek διασπορά, "scattering, dispersion")[1] is a scattered population with a common origin in a smaller geographic area. Diaspora can also refer to the movement of the population from its original homeland.

I was thinking about all the comings and goings this season, the most I can remember. And then I thought about the departures and what a team might look like made up from them.

IIRC in my time Dogs players have left and played for all the non-Vic teams now. Have Dogs players left and played for all the Vic based teams?

Can you pick a 22 man squad of past Dogs players, with one player from each team? (including Fitzroy) Therefore, you are only allowed 3 double ups.

What is your team like?

It's an 18 team comp but Fitzroy replaces the Bulldogs which still makes it 18. I think we need 4 duplicated teams to get the 22 players.

All these back pre 1990 that I can remember and were still in their prime. (Except Templeton who had a dodgy knee)

Bernie Quinlan - Fitz
Gary Dempsey - North
Brian Wilson - Melbourne
Barry round - South Melb/Syd
Brad Hardie - Bris
Templeton - melbourne
(all Brownlow medalists)
Jimmy Edmond - Bris/Syd
Michael McClean - Bris

Guys, just to go over the rules as I know them and the challenge that awaits you:

1) You have to come up with the best 22 Bulldog players (in position) that left us to play at another side.
2) There are 17 other sides and Fitzroy and you must have a player from each of those sides. That makes 18 other sides.
3) Four players can be doubled up from the teams to give the best 22.

If I have missed anything let me know and I will add it to this thread.

Wilson actually left for North - who then sent him to Melbourne.

David Thorpe & Bones McGhie both played in Richmond's 1974 flag side (as Centre & Centre Half back, no less!), whilst Fred Cook left for Yarraville/Port Melbourne.

Neil Cordy went to the Swans and kicked on with his footy. Shane Ellen kicked 5 in a premiership side with Adelaide and had Kim Koster beside him as he did it.

3 time b&f Ian Dunstan left us for North , albeit he did fk all for them. Georgie Bisset left for Collingwood, as did club captain, Laurie Sandilands a few years later.

Even EJ had a dabble with North around '72..! Bruce Reid (now famously) left for Carlton... And was booed by us in rd 1 the following year - despite the fact that the club pushed him there!

Darren Baxter (son of Ray), who was a solid performer and dogs through and through left for Hawthorn.... I'm nearly out, now...

Ambrose Palmer used to often leave us for a season off to box! Three or four times, from memory. But to be fair, he boxed before he played footy and was always loyal to the club and the Footscray suburb. Even wore his Dogs jumper into the ring for one title fight..

Yep, and to compound things, news of his imminent departure was released (or leaked) prior to our 2nd semi against Hawthorn in 1985.... We got smashed by 84 odd points! For me, that was far bigger than Griffen's departure as a calamity.

As it was, Edmond had one ordinary year for Sydney - prior to being sent to Brisbane (due to the salary cap being introduced and a lot of the higher paid, under-performers being palmed off).

He ended up playing 30-odd games over three years with two different clubs after leaving as our highly respected, fearless leader. A man's man who could've been a legend. However he ended up a journeyman who was wilfully forgotten by the rank and file. A real pity.

I predict Griffen to go the same way.
