Like Blackboard used to say on Mr Squiggle, "Hurry up!"

I'm so happy just to finally have an announcement.

Will it be a coach announcement or something else. I reckon it will be about the new coach I would say. You don't have an announcement like this if it wasn't something major with the club.

'Frothy' is too idiotic like Brainless Brownless.
I like a 'Black and Tan' but that's too Hawks.
'Shandy' is too diluted, ditto 'Portagaff'.
'Piss' has its merits as does 'Ale'.
Hopefully he'll be 'Tonic' by name and nature.

Don't want to be negative here and it's great Bevo gets a crack I just hope he is the right choice. I'm seeing parallels with Macca re. his premierships at Ocean Grove in the BFL and Bevo's accomplishments at St. Bedes. Both are hardly the hothouse that is AFL football. Like Macca, Bevo seemed to have more of a player development role at the Hawks even though he was looking after the back line. I hope it isn't a decision based more on that he's coming from Hawthorn which is what I think we saw with Macca coming out of Geelong, time will tell...

There was a video, about 1:20 long of Beveridge introducing himself as the new coach. It appears as though it has been taken down, probably so it doesn't overshadow the press conference.

First big media conference and understandably he was a little nervous. Had to think about his words a bit, but I think he's got 3 major characteristics that will guarantee him success as a coach:

1. The death stare!. Gave a bit a look to the journo who asked the stupid question about the puns on his name.
2. Deep Husky voice. Perfect for delivering a spray with some punch to it.
3. The jugular. He's got the biggest neck in the business.

It's been 42 minutes and I'm already sick of Beveridge puns - I hate to think what some self-indulgent sub-editors at The Age and the Hun will be cooking up next year.

Good luck to him - can't say I'm excited but hopefully he can unite the group and the club can move forward together instead of in factions.

I got a feeling he'll be doing a lot of work with our PR advisers. I thought describing the club as 'dour' wasn't a good choice of words!

But that's the perception though in the outside world .
Everyone's "second" favourite team is something I want to lose as a club.
When you win games you suddenly don't become everyone's second favourite side, and he made a point of that.

The bulldog tragician
14-11-2014, 03:23 PM
I remember the sports psych in Year of the Dog doctor who put up signs around the club rooms saying : 'exciting!' To try and paint us in a different light. They were torn off the wall as the club went through another horror season. Winning is the way to turn around that perception, otherwise it's just about words.

(But I agree that I'd ban 'dour' from Luke's repertoire of phrases)

A hard earned thirst needs a big warm coach
And the best warm coach is Luke
Lukey Beveridge.

Matter of fact, we've got him now.

He looks very Plantagenet with those hunched eyebrows. I could see him as a medieval war Lord in a damp part of England. He should make a fine coach.

I missed the first part of the Presser, did they talk about the mentor role?

Bev's interview in 3AW just after 6pm good, as was the SEN one. Good sense of humour, thoughtful, no spin. Reasonable to expect he'd be nervous in first press conference for newbie coach - he'll improve no doubt.

He appears genuinely excited to meet the players etc. more fully on Monday and I think his sense of youthful optimism will rub off. I like the fact he is not adverse to change in structures and that it can be managed well and that these changes do not take a long time (reading into this ability to adapt, to be flexible).

(Apologies to fellow Mighty Boosh & Bollo the gorilla lovers).... "I got a good feelin' about this"

Its taken me 3 listens to the SEN interview on SoundCloud to work out who he reminds me of. The tone, the intonation, the way he answers the q's - Ross Lyon. Anyone agree? If he talks like Ross Lyon I hope he's as good a coach as Ross Lyon!
