View Full Version : Making Sure we are not complacent this weekend

Just hoping Bevo has done his homework this week and for those few that have gone to training how has Bevo and team trained. We need don't want another slip up against a 'weaker' opponent. GWS next week I reckon we can win as well but will be tougher based on there form. Port Power up there next will difficult but you never know as the Lions beat them last week.

It is a game that we must win and I would be over the moon if we have a crushing victory. We badly need to boost our percentage. A big win would certainly be confirmation that we are not just there to make up the numbers. I do think the signs are good. Competition for a spot in the team is a lot hotter this year than it has been for some time. The incentive to keep playing well is front and centre in the players' minds.

I read an article recently about the top teams getting into a practice of killing off games early and then basically working at just maintaining the 5-10 goal lead, rotating players, trying different tactics etc and it also mentioned resting players against lower teams, because they already had % and games won racked up. I don't think we are that good yet and the players should keep the scoreboard ticking over against weak opposition.
At the end of the year the chance for some vital finals experience will probably come down to small % differences. If the opportunity presents itself for a big win, then the players should go all out for it and enjoy a big win on the G. They are a young bunch and it would be a great confidence booster leading into a couple of hard games.

We've lost our last two games, not sure how we could possibly be complacent.

Yeah, I think the guys will be nervous and full of anticipation for Sunday.
Obviously they slept from half time at the St Kilda game and woke up late in the first quarter against Freo. However the positive is that they woke up and were able to hit the switch to some extent. It's a lesson only recently learned, so I expect them to be acutely aware of the importance of bein 'on' on Sunday.

I'm nervously confident (is that even possible) that we can win comfortably this week. But just because we pushed Freo to the wire doesn't mean it's an automatic win against Melbourne. They will be looking to show that last week's thumping at the hands of the Hawks won't happen again. It's our job to make them believe it is going to happen again.
Being a young team we haven't coped well with a couple injuries during the game (Hawks, Stkilda). Don't know why that is, but we didn't respond well. Just hope we can beat Melbourne convincingly no matter what the circumstance. We need to take care of the result first and then make a statement in doing so.
If we are complacent we will lose because we have no right to be. We are hanging on to the top 8 by a fingernail. We have winnable games coming up but they are very much losable as well.

Even having this conversation is a concern.
We always seem to have a bit of trouble with Melbourne in recent years. We've only lost 1 in our last 10 against the dees - but in that time they have been a very poor side. Last year we got them in 2 close ones (6 points & 16 points) where the game was in the balance until well into the last quarter. And the previous year we split the honours over the 2 games.
Having said that, with our best intensity - our pressure should be too much for Melbourne, and I think Stringer, Dickson and Crameri are going to be a real handful for their defence (assuming their best defender, MacDonald, goes to Boyd).

Melbourne FC perhaps sniff a chance with us owing to our years of fluctuating performance. Let's stamp the new brand WB on the game .
Games like this is where the lessons learnt in the Saints loss should come to fruition.

Melbourne always play well against us. I have absolutely no confidence in wining this game, especially considering they came off a hiding last weekend. They will be primed. We will have to play at our best to beat them.

My wife said I was in a bad mood for a few days after we lost to the Saints. I have warned her, if we lose this week, be prepared. :D
