I am as high as a kite about this game and really looking forward to watching it at the local pub tomorrow night. Don't know why, it is going to be a very difficult game to win.
I will be watching it at Hart's Hotel, Victoria Street, Footscray. The publican is none other than Peter German, who has strong connections to us of course from the Williamstown VFL partnership days when he served as senior coach for Williamstown and development coach for the Bulldogs.

We are going to miss Picken. That's a really bad out for us.
I count six mids with more than two preseasons Wallis, Macrae, Stevens, Dahlhaus, Jong and Hrovat. Seven if you count M. Boyd. Then there's Stringer, Dickson and Crameri and the three kids so we are very light on.
It looks like we will try and stretch them forward with Roughie and Boyd as targets. And keep our defensive structure and attack from there.

Honeychurch hasn't played since he was subbed out a few weeks back. I think we may have learnt that with the younger blokes we can can't bring them straight back in and expect them to perform at the same level they were performing at previously.

Honeychurch was a real key to our success early that being said he's been out for that long it would be hard to bring him straight back although I'd seriously consider it. Why he was out that long? Seems a long spell for someone who was being rested. Injured?

My recollection was he hurt his shoulder and hence why he was subbed out.

I mentioned it on another thread, but I wouldn't be surprised if Caleb Daniel is a late "in". He has made the trip over as a travelling emergency but he played three finals for South Adelaide on this ground last September (averaging about 20 disposals) so he would know the ground better than anyone on our squad.

He brings intensity and gets to contests. I don't expect he will just switch back on but if he's right to go I would have expected him to come back in sooner rather than later ala Jong.

Just heard Robbo on SEN saying that he spoke to Leon Cameron after we beat the Giants - apparently they put very little time into stopping our game plan as they were confident theirs would overwhelm us. When we were all over them early the Giants tried everything to stop us - extra at stoppages, plus one behind the ball etc and nothing worked.
I find that interesting because I was confident that our game plan would stop theirs.
Not so sure this week - I think we will struggle againt Port. When they have momentum they play a high tempo "run and gun" style that can overwhelm teams (examples 1st quarter v Hawthorn / 2nd half v Melbourne).
When they don't they play a counter attacking "rope a dope" style, allowing multiple forward entrys but denying the ball in dangerous positions, then launching attacks from the half back line.
Justin Westhoff is key - in the 1st scenario he pushes forward to give them an extra tall in attack and in the 2nd he floats back to block the opposition's forward entries.
We really struggle against teams that play like this - for that reason a win against Port tonight would be very significant in our development - the most likely outcome is a loss of 5 to 10 goals.

Having CD as a late change would be an interesting move , probably the only player you would swap him him with is Dale . Its a high stakes game leading into the bye , CD's playing style is to use his mobility to create space and switch play but he has never played under AFL pressure . On the Team Sheet we have moved Dahlhaus to the middle which does leave a spot for a creative player in the forward line . The Coaching Staff have backed Dale to give him game time at a senior level , given what we have seen from Bevo so far this season I don't think we can discount a tactical move to swap Daniel for Dale as a late change

In the end, considering how easily Port were able to generate their goals, we've done well to be within a kick. We need to address our accountability at the stoppages to remain in contact with Port.
Does anyone else agree we would be the most wasteful and inefficient team when shooting for goal. So many of our supposed goalscorers have serious flaws in their kicking.

I thought perhaps it was a game where the ball wasn't bouncing our way at crucial moments but actually I think it is a bit dewy, we haven't played much at night (since R1 I think), and we're playing as if it's a sunny day - crucial that we stop trying to play as if the ball is dry.

We've done well to keep it a tight affair, but Port still look the likelier to score. They are getting free player just not taking advantage. Some very good work in defense by Hamling and Wood.
Hamling seems very much up to the speed and has great temperament. Not since Mozz's debut against Adelaide have i seen a new defender appear so at ease so quickly.

Hard game for T.Boyd to get in to with us not really hitting targets .
We have structured to score from stoppages but we need to open up more chains of possession both inside and outside , might be an idea to drop Roughead back and push Roberts forward

Supremely young side in; not surprised we ran out of gas.
We just aren't smart enough going into the forward 50. We're too willing to look to create stoppages (because we admittedly score a lot from them) rather than try to hit targets. It creates too much opportunity for opposition spares to take bulk marks - think Rance, McGovern, Johnson, the entire Melbourne defence and now Westhoff starring against us.

That's right.. And don't we need the rest, too!? Boyd's looking tired (remember he's 19!), I think Bont was carrying an issue for the past three weeks, Jong also looks particularly tired - which has affected his confidence. His disposal's also dropped off since he broke his hand.
I get the feeling with Bont that they let him carry a niggle with a plan to pair up a week off with the bye - thus giving him the fortnight he needs.
A young side with no Libba to share the inside load: 5 and 5 at around 100% points is very good. We've also gone deep into games with Port & Freo, whilst we've knocked off top 8 teams like Adelaide, West Coast, GWS, Richmond & Sydney.
Unlike Melbourne, we haven't managed the Fixture List by resting players for games against the big boys, then targeting the 'beatable' opponents. We're developing a game plan to beat the big boys - not dodge them.
This is a development year, so 5 & 5 at the break is definitely a pass mark.

We are a bloody young side, was always going to struggle in the midfield tonight and had to play forwards in there which really killed our structure. There were quite a number of Dogs supporters but the last quarter was the real dampener.
However, the pub had a really excellent 50's style rock and roll band playing called the Groove Tones. Sax, double bass, drums, electric piano and guitar. Very nice, indeed. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, songs like Tequila and Americana. Between the Groove Tones and the footy there was a big turn out at the pub, very laid back, friendly atmosphere and a mixture of ages. Good to see.
And the sax player of the Groove Tones is a serious Bulldogs supporter. In between songs he was calling out to the bar to get the scores!

Love the Vic. Feels like a country pub on Saturday nights. The old guitarist from Daddy Cool often plays there. The half Parma is also superb. It's the last really old school Dogs pub left. I hope Dogs fans get around it. When Dogs are playing interstate, it's the go to venue of choice.
I had sick kids last night, so gave it a miss. Otherwise I'd have been there. I took some friends there the night after we played Box Hill. Hi Webby, the Council has placed some kind of heritage overlay on the pub but I don't how effective that is in terms of it continuing to operate as a pub in the longer term. You might be right - it could be the last. Let's see... The Buckingham has gone (turned into apartments), is the Mona Castle still operating? The Royal and the Barkly - gone. The Plough & the Station - truly great bistro venues but not quite pubs anymore. The House of Fools (Belgravia Hotel) - gone.
On a positive note, the apartment market is saturated in Footscray at the moment. I think there is little incentive currently to redevelop more sites.

If we had of kicked straighter after dominating first half of first quarter game could have been a lot closer. Did well up until 10 mins or so into last quarter. Young side - understandable. Not too upset. Missed Picken particularly. Bonti has been off for a few weeks - good for him to recharge the batteries.
Got to improve delivery into forward line and build confidence to lead to make space to mark ball - Pt Adelaide a good side to learn that from so hopefully was a good lesson for the young ones. This will all come with time. I think we have the right coach so we must be patient.
My only thought was perhaps should have popped Fletcher into forward line in last half, but then again we did not have it in forward line enough to kick a winning score anyway in last half.
Enjoyed my first interstate game even though it was a loss. Pity about the two yobbo cheer squad chaps who swore a bit & said disparaging remarks about opposition players instead solely focusing on supporting Dogs.
Note to a few other supporter(s) in cheer squad who turned on their own players en masse in last quarter with loud remarks players could possibly hear - grow up and be a better cheer squad member please.
Go Dogs !!

I think a move of Fletcher forward, Minson to full time ruck and Roughead back might have at least given us a semi-viable forward option once Boyd went off the ground.
I also agree that we missed Picken terribly last night, such has his excellent form been in these past four or five rounds.

The Mona Castle is still there but caters to a more upmarket fine dining crowd these days and not so much the wharfies and bikies that frequented the place back in the '80s. The Exchange is still operating but has more of a wine bar feel to it these days.
In many ways Footscray's best pub ATM is The Rev(erence) with a very vibrant band scene. They have international and interstate bands and a couple of months ago hosted the reunion gig for the Victims a legendary Perth punk band fronted by Dave Faulkner who went on to form Hoodoo Gurus. A lot of people I know idolised the Victims and had been waiting their whole life to see them play live.
But for watching footy, it's the Vic. Although I watched the Swans game at Barkers at VU Whitten oval with 500 people I ended up hugging at least once.

Has some relevance, it depends on what if anything is heritage listed inside the pub. This has implications for what a new tenant / owner can / can't do. As a buyer you'd be wary buying the pub and completely altering the inside of it to suit a retail premises if you have to jump through a million legislative hoops to do so. That being said I would assume the overlay covers the outside building / architecture or the general facade. This means you can't alter the structure itself but you can deck it out on the inside anyway you choose.
