I'm reminded on my childhood with grand parents that measured the height everyone who went in the house and marked it with a texta on a wall, according to the date. Presumably so they could chart how their/us young uns were developing. So I was thinking it might be interesting to do this in cyber space with such a young doggies playing group, where we can chart career best stats when they happen by date, by category and by who - as they happen in the future.
Ie:
T. Boyd - Goal Kicking - New Best 4 Goals - 20 June 2015 (vs Brisbane at Etihad)
M. Wallis - Goal Kicking - New Best 3 Goals - 20 June 2015 (vs Brisabne at Etihad)
J. Grant - Handballs - New Best 14 HBs - 20 June 2015 (vs Brisbane at Etihad)

It's been a tough bandwagon, but now is the time for everyone to get behind him. If his confidence can get him to believe he's a very player, then he will rise to his talent ceiling which is very high. That confidence comes from coaches and media, but also us mug punters to invest in him, to support his form and embrace his new role.

Serious question, do you actually know him?

Fair question, but no. Never even met him, although that would be nice. From all my bits and pieces, I think confidence has been his issue not his frame. When you're not confident you can cut corners, or fail to have effort at 100%. When he started to string some games late 2013 I thought he found it, but injuries ruined his 2014. He is starting to believe and I vividly remember Bobby saying when he realises that not only is he good enough, but when he realises his talent with effort and confidence we will see a very good player. To be fair to my critics I liked Tim Walsh a lot. I think it's time to back him with a contract now. In lieu of pay for performance, I'd offer an extra year for performance. I just hope the wider fan base understand the benefit of backing him and the benefit to him, our side, our club and thus our game day experience.

Well you don't want the ball full stop because you're worried you'll screw up
I think you're on to something, and it's an area where all the discussion on here could actually convert to a positive influence on the team. Let's all get behind him and see if we can't help him believe in himself

Awesome. I hope we all follow your lead. Just take the last two weeks as an illustration of our point. He played a good game two weeks ago but had some criticism that he should've taken shots on the run and not given off. Last week he could've dished off but ran passed 50 and kicked a nice goal which seemed to propel his quarter. We should all see he's been doing what we and the coaches want from week to week. He has zero confidence in his set shots and you could see on the weekend his eyes were darting around when he was on the ground. Zero confidence in set shots breeds zero confidence in set shots, just ask Cloke. But confidence also breeds confidence, love your work boydogs.

I made it down about 10:30. It was mostly goalkicking practice, and very accurate. Wallis, Bonts and Picken did mostly handball drills. Minson took a lot of shots close to goal on an angle, away from the rest of the group. Murphy & T Boyd were there but didn't train. Everyone else seemed to be there including Hamilton. Quite a light session with a lot of fun mixed in - soccer tricks, banter, assistant coaches chasing each other around
I didn't get to talk to Granty, but I got some pictures. Sorry if this is the wrong thread

We certainly seemed keen during the trade period etc to add younger players who had been in the system for a while but didn't get a lot of opportunities. For a club like ours with a developing list adding players Biggs, Hamling and even our own Redpath and Jong seemed to be a theme we were wanting to follow.
I wonder what price you can put on getting players with 2 or 3 years of development from another club?

It's a real bonus that Hamling has already had that development. He has stepped up to AFL level and adjusted to the tempo. A change of scenery and an opportunity to play must feel good after three years.

At the time we drafted him I think we believed he still need another season of VFL footy with just a few games in the seniors thrown in. If he bounces back quickly from this injury I think he could easily play 10 senior games by the seasons end and set himself up nicely for the 2016 season as part of the men's department.

He's a very quiet lad and I get the impression he wouldn't watch a game of football. He and Kelly were at the players sponsors yesterday and while Hamling went through the motions and answered the questions Kelly took the more senior role and even walked around the audience with the microphone getting questions. Both were drafted in the same year and from memory only 7 picks apart.
You can tell Hamling is the quiet country boy. I don't think he is a footy head.

I've always wondered about that. To me being an AFL player (and the dedication and commitment needed to attain that level), just has to go hand in hand with being a footy head. I can't see how they're mutually exclusive. Humans don't cease to amaze me.

I think most players see it as a career and a stepping stone to greater things and it consumes their time and effort while others treat it more like a job. It has to be a lot harder for a player to become elite who sees football as a job.

There must be some sense of loss of the romance of it all no doubt. When I was a kid I wanted nothing more than to be like KT and play VFL footy. I dreamed about it everyday, wore my screw in boots to primary school most days and used to get my Grandmother to sign KTs name over everything and pretend it was his signature. Footy was very different then.
I was interested to hear from the players association a month ago that a high percentage of players do not enjoy what they are doing. This really indicates to me that many players see the game as a 'job'. I was wondering about our players and whether any felt the same, which would be a shame. I'm hoping those were cleaned out at the end of last season.
Anyway, I'm derailing...

Yeah I suppose. I think Beasley came over from W.A because Melbourne offered better opportunities for stockbroking. I remember him saying that who drafted him was not important and that he didn't come from WAFL straight into an VFL club, on the contrary he came for business reasons.

I'm not sure if Tony Shaw has called the 'Third Year Blues' on Bonts... Probably.
Bonts hit the 30 possessions for the first time last week (I couldn't believe he hadn't done it yet), and backed it up again this week. On top of a three goal haul recently. The trend in his output shows a significant upward curve on what was already a great output. Are we watching him take the step to the next level?

His 2nd Year Blues call last year was an all time classic.
Looks like he's ready to take games apart now, rather than a few quarters. Scary prospect for the rest of the competition.

Tony has an acquired brain injury dating back to the time he ran into that lamp post in the early 90s.

Pretty sure that was just a symptom and not the cause, even in his playing days he seemed to be a little damaged.

JJ - Total Disposals
Biggs - Total Disposals
Daniel - Total Disposals, Total Marks & Total Tackles (x2)

Tom Boyd - Total Disposals & Total Marks

Good article and articulates big sides of the coin well. Lachie is clearly having a massive year and the rotation restrictions play to his aerobic strengths. His TOG% would be off the charts. Most taggers don't have the tank to go with him anyway.
It's hard to pot a bloke who works as hard as he does to run and provide options, especially coming out of defence BUT...I would love to see others do their part and reduce our dependence on him in the back half, because he can cough it up under no pressure and make iffy decisions at times.
If he could get more dangerous front of centre and further add some polish to his disposal (both by hand and foot), we've got a genuine superstar on our hands. He's so young and the penny has dropped with him, so no reason he can't get there.

Averages over 88% game time. His capacity to stay out there has to be helping every other midfielder at least a little bit.

Tom Boyd with a break out game, really important and influential. Zaine Cordy shut down AA CHB McGovern, also had career best marks and sending him to the ruck. Libba with a clutch goal, contested monster and influential in the guts. Clay Smith with a goal and career best number of handballs. Dunkley outstanding, equal best 2 goals, influential and 73.3% DE. Roughead great in the ruck, running bomb goal. JJ amazing off half back.
To think these guys had exactly '0' finals games experience between them. I can't wait to see what they do next...

He should be better for it too, being exposed to the pressure of a big game. He had 9 touches in the first quarter, laid a tackle and got a couple of hard hits himself. Some of his natural polish was off, but in that kind of game to get nearly 20 disposals was a solid effort. When he's getting 20 touches and his trademark polish is on them all, he will be another pushing in the competition for spots ahead.

First team to win the week after coming back from Carins V the Suns.

40 consecutive games with 10 handballs or more

I'd think for a coach that being able to lock those numbers in every week and be able to know Jack is going to give them to you must be priceless. Imagine if we could depend on one of the forwards to deliver 3 goals or more a game? That's the difference between winning and losing most matches.

His emergence as a genuine midfield option has given Bevo the ability to move Bont forward for longer periods of time, which has been pretty critical the past month.
Imagine adding another A-Grade mid to the mix (hello Josh Kelly!) and letting Bont become the best CHF in the game.

If you asked most football supporters what they knew about Madge they'd say "oh yeah, the one who's always ducking his head" and that's because most people are stupid.
