Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge will invite Brent Guerra to the Whitten Oval in an attempt to convey to Dogs' players a first-hand account of the perils of gambling.

Guerra went public this week, revealing the extent of a gambling addiction .

Beveridge coached Guerra when in charge of Hawthorn's defence.

The first-year senior coach said he knew Guerra liked to bet, but was not aware of the severity of his issues.

"I'll call him next week and there might be an opportunity for Brent to come around and talk to our players about his experiences and help our guys ward off the possibility of it happening to them, because the risks are always there," Beveridge said at Whitten Oval on Friday morning.

"Brent and I are really close, he was one of the guys that I coached [when] I was coaching their backline.

"I knew that he liked to punt but I didn't have any idea of the gravity of it."

Beveridge believed the issue was one that needed to be addressed even more throughout the industry.

"It's a huge concern because of the downtime our players have and the amount of disposable income they have."

"There's a lot of things we can do to help guys that are vulnerable.

"Anything that we can do, the AFL can do, the AFLPA can do to help our players, we should explore it."
