View Full Version : "They" call him The Package

We are talking Jake Stringer's nickname that Chanel #7 has bestowed upon him, as I sure you are all aware.

Chanel #7 has used it ad nauseam this season and I have detected the name is sticking in the lexicon of the general football public.

On the one hand, it is not surprising as it connotes "highlights" package or "complete" package (complete player). And that is our Jake Stringer. Every match he does the amazing.

On the other hand, "The Package" has certain, shall we say, Jacqui Lambie connotations.

I have thought about it, Stringer is without doubt the type of player who attracts nicknames. I think on WOOF, various suggestions have been put forward without any particularly taking hold.

I have decided after due consideration, balancing the pros and the cons, that I am going to go with the Chanel #7 moniker: welcome The Package.

But what are your thoughts, fellow WOOFERS? Be frank and there is no need to be constructive.

Reminds me of "The Total Package" Lex Luger. Wasn't a fan of his so that doesn't work for me and because it come from BT's tongue it makes me cringe anyway. I prefer Jesse, sorry Jake. :)

Jesse gets a lot of passes from Brad Boyd even though Brad spends a lot of time in defence these days. I found out the other day that Brad's middle name is Keith.

Brian Taylor has called Marcus Picken the last 3 weeks. Clearly calling things and players accurately is more a nice to have guideline than a standard to achieve...

Players call him Stringsy which seem easy enough to yell at games.

All these elaborate, multi-syllable names fall to pieces when yelling something out in the moment - and Jake certainly has his moments

I was watching a game on the weekend and a player was going the one finger tap celebration. Richo says "you know why he celebrates like that" other commentators "no why?" Richo "Because he's a germophobe" other commentators dissolve into helpless laughter, dead air, Richo sounding worried and realising he's been set up "yeah, ah, he was telling me the other day that he only likes to do the one finger because he's a germophobe and he can't stand being touched"

I think he'll end up as good as Fyfe(Ablett snr was the best I've seen, so no shame in not getting to that level) and better than Bonti. It's going to be so much fun watching these 2 dictating games over the next decade.

What can't Jake do that makes him no way complete IYO?

I agree he could be a complete player. Just at the moment he lacks the consistent output. In regards to his tank and defensive pressure. At times he just looks lazy on the field. But hes probably just gassed. He will get better. Geez he does some great highlight footage tho. Not keen on anything BT comes up with. Hes a twat. Carn the dogs!!!. I think it's more to do with him still being only 21. The rest of that stuff will come and when it does what an amazing player we will have.

My mates from work were all over it a couple of weeks ago and it was a bit annoying, but it was also great that it was one of our players with a rising profile and not someone from their team. I was quietly smug.....

It's Stringerrrrrr!!! for mine, but like the fact that one of ours is in the limelight. However, Jake needs to do the simple things consistently, the miraculous things on a fairly regular basis and take us into previously un-visited territory occasionally to become a superstar. He certainly has the potential to be that. Freakish events? Who remembers Fitzroy's Mickey Conlon headbutting an opponent in the sternum, knocking him flat then snapping a goal from 40 mts at Princes Park?

He reminds me of Franklin in that he just has Big Time written all over him. One day he will retire and need an extra twenty minutes for his career highlights reel.

Yep, just as well the Dwayne Pipe wasn't commentating, otherwise we would have all been subjected to the phrase "CRAZY GOOD!" once again. Mind you, that would be 100x preferable over getting another BT/Darcy/Richo/Lingy game ever again.

At the minute "The Package" is more gift wrapping than present. Once he gets his core engine built up, he will be able to hit beast mode 15 times a game, versus the couple he does now, and that's just scary.

The drafting of Macrae and Stringer that year showed the club thought long and hard about what was needed in the club and they got it right big time, solid gold those two.

Macrae, Bontempelli, Grant, Stevens & Wallis add a fair bit of size to the midfield. Allows our mosquito fleet to compliment rather than have to fight above their weight.

Finally watched a replay of the GC game last night. Stringer was woeful with his decision-making and skill errors for the first 3 qtrs but the effort never wavered. The rewards certainly came in the last qtr.

He is such a unique player with a unique set of skills - as others have alluded to, he just needs to focus on doing the basics well and he will end up being a top 10 players in the competition IMO.
