The Western Bulldogs won’t be satisfied with just a top-eight finish, as they approach their cut-throat elimination final against Adelaide on Saturday night.
Captain Bob Murphy and senior coach Luke Beveridge addressed media on Tuesday with Murphy saying despite the excitement of reaching the finals, it won’t be enough to satisfy the Dogs’ aspirations.
“The word I use is appetite, we’ve built up quite an appetite.
“I think you’ve seen that this year, that we’re hungry and 14 wins just ain’t going to cut it, we want more.”
Reflecting back to November last year when the Bulldogs first appointed Beveridge, Murphy said it wasn’t something he would have predicted at the time.
Ten months on, Murphy says he knew quite quickly upon Beveridge’s arrival, that he could help drive something special.
“It’s incredible how footy clubs can respond and bounce back and almost from November, as soon as Luke came on board, a new energy filled the place.
“From then on it has felt just like a special year, that’s why we want to keep it going as long as we can.”
Despite the fairy tale, Murphy says his side’s on-field performance is deserving of a serious tilt at finals action, after five years out of September.
“I haven’t thought about it too much (the five-year break), it’s more about how exciting it is for the boys who have been here in the last three or four years who have done it hard.
“They’ve kept the faith and kept working so hard that we’ve got ourselves to this point and we feel like deserve it.”
And Murphy’s message for that young group of players is simple:
“Enjoy the experience, this is what we’ve worked so hard for this whole year, and we feel like we deserve to be there.
“Get out there Saturday night and let it rip, it’s as simple as that.”
