How good has the Rookie List been to us? 5 guns, a promising ruckman, a midfielder who can break the lines at his best and a ful forward who is keeping Tom Boyd out of the team.

Will be well over 1,000 games from that group. That's a massive return in anyone's language. I would've liked another 300 out of Howard, Grant and Ayce though. And Smith to have good knees.

The success we've had with the RL almost makes up for the busts we've had with first rounders. Problem is first rounders is where you get your real quality. With all due respect to the Rookie List boys they aren't well known for their silky skills.

Hawthorn's trade/free agency selections are without peer. They are so good at targeting players from other clubs who will to fill specific roles for them, and they aren't afraid to pay market rate or slightly overs to get their man. Their approach to list management is the anti-Dodoro approach, which is why they have continually improved their list over the years while Essendon remain stuck in terminal mediocrity because they overrate their own players and therefore other clubs can't stand dealing with them.

One bad year can set you back several. Essendon have a lot of ground to make up for.
