1. Whitfield. Not set the world on fire.
2. O'Rourke. Traded.
3. Plowman. Traded.
4. Toumpas. Traded.
5. Stringer. All Australian.
6. Macrae. Youngest 40 touch player.
7. Wines. Will be a very good player.
8. Mayes. No idea.
9. Vlaustin. Ok.
10. Daniher. Father son, looks alright.
11. Menzel. Traded.
12. Jaksch. Traded.

I can't say that I recall nearly half the top 12 of an AFL draft being traded within 3 years, and traded at a much, much lower value. Thank god the top 4 got stuffed and we nailed our picks. I think it also shows gifting a heap of high draft picks to a start up side is no guarantee of success if they stuff it up.

Whitfield's very classy .
O'rourke is very outside, as is Toumpas( bit of a panic merchant with ball in hand)
Mayes has gone backwards, Jaksch doesn't look up to it , and Menzel needs to work harder
Daniher will be a star, and wines is a bull.
Plowman looks ordinary( like all young GWS key backs)Vlaustin is solid
Redoing that draft Stringer would be 1st picked, and Macrae behind Wines

Wines is already a fantastic player and was from his debut. Vlaustin and Daniher will make it. But you make a good point about all the others! Just shows how important recruiting staff are!

I was surprised we didn't take Wines, but I am happy with Macrae. I think Macrae will be very good in years to come as he builds his strength. He certainly knows how to find the ball, too bad he doesn't know how to kick it.

Doesn't know how to kick it consistently. He still hits some superb passes, but the problem with his action is there is a higher chance of error as the sweet spot is not so large. He'll be just fine.

As for that draft, we were heavily interested in both O'Rourke and Plowman before the draft from memory. I wonder how their (and our) journeys would have been altered if GWS had picked differently...

Yeah would have taken Wines before MaCrae in hindsight.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If Clay Smith hadn't had terrible run I wonder what our answer would be from a team structure view point.

Absolutely, not to mention Libba. Macrae suited us better then and he still suits us now. That's not to downplay Wines as a player - he's a gun. I still think Macrae will end up having a better AFL career than Wines, but not quite as good as Stringer ;)

And this was supposedly a strong draft. Makes you really question the weak draft/strong draft prediction.

Reckon picks 5-11 are all quality AFL players (or will be). The rest are a big bowl of meh.
