Carlton fans: For some reason a lot of Jewish people seem to be Carlton fans. I had an ex dentist of mine, and a whole other bunch of friends in Malvern East that were. Also used to do some work in nursing homes and all the old Jewish folk were Blues fans. To a supporter, all hated Mick Malthouse. Have to be the first club to pull the trigger on the bronx Cheer I'd say. When they become annoying just start talking about John Elliot and they shut up.
Melbourne: Tend to be ex-private school folk. Did a lot of work with Haileybury and they are all Melbourne people. Not very savage at their own club's wet-lettuce philosophy of footy - sort of resigned and ho-hum. When you start discussing footy, they sort of shuffle around a bit and make funny faces. Find it awkward to discuss football. Few old farmers down Hamilton way are Melbourne supporters too. Must have the patience of saints.
St Kilda: See themselves as being slightly trendy and hip. 'Sainters' - irks me when they say that. Shout a lot of silly things at games. Seem to have a higher proportion of women. A lot of librarians seem to be Saints fans.
North Fans: probably most akin to us. Have spent a fair bit of time at the North Members end and get along alright with their fans. Shout 'Go Boom-Boom' a lot. Obviously highly grating on the nerves.
Geelong fans: Arrogance level is high but they all warm to us and often will claim us as their 'second team'. So, can't wait until we are going down there to pummel them and their sense of entitlement on a regular basis. Don't care about anything but beating Hawthorn. Sort of expect success and very high expectations as fans. Get really pissed off when beaten by us or Melbourne. Tend to live in the past a fair bit.
Richmond: Hilarious at games. Totally blinded by the yellow and black when analysing their own list. Seem to have a higher proportion of bearded supporters. Definitely seem to buy more AFL merchandise than other supporters. Always seeing Tigers bumper stickers and such.
Essendon: Fanatics are always concealing a secret doubt.
Any other comments?

A few regional dialect variations and other linguistic phenomena I have noticed:
Richmond supporters: pronounce the phoneme "ow" as "a" hence, "yellow" as "yella"
Essendon supporters: pronounce the phoneme "en" as "er", hence their team name is pronounced as Esserdon.
Melbourne: pronounce the word "demons" with a silent "mon." This indicates that they would pronounce the name "Simon", e.g., as "Si", etc. They also practice honing their accent with the following phrase: "To the snow we go when our ladder position is low."
Collingwood: every second word is a swear word.

Jews and Italians early immigrants settled in Carlton
This is why there are a lot of Jewish Carlton supporters

Not to mention the odd Italian Carlton supporter.
For some reason Essendon supporters have a fixation on rocking up to international (mainly colonial) sporting events in the Essendon jumper.
It's weird.

And suburban BBQ's. Makes it a bit awkward because recently you spend the whole lunch trying NOT to talk about Essendon. So as not to offend them.

Its not offending them that keeps me from saying anything, it more once you mention Essendon they tend to start with a tirade of how wonderful Hird is,they are innocent, have done nothing wrong and that AFL are just out to crucify them.
Like they would know what its like for the AFL to try and crucify them.

Think you'll find that Richmond has a higher proportion of Greek supporters (relative to total supporters) than any other club - a by-product of the actual suburb being full of Greeks in the 60's and 70's.
Collingwood has its fair share, as does Carlton. Not so many in the Dogs ;)

This thread title is a misnomer, it should be 'Club Stereotypes'. 'Archetypes' are innate types, such as are evident in Greek myths, folk stories and World Championship wrestling.
Collingwood- a lot of Irish Catholics in its early years, because they were the poor working class of the time.
Carlton- a lot of bluebloods, moneyed people, including Bob Menzies. Later a lot of Italian and Greek working class migrants who had taken over from the Irish.
Melbourne- your conservative, old public school boys and MCC members.
Richmond- is it just me or is every second woman you meet a Richmond supporter? Must be the Tiger emblem that allures them.

Was it a Hawks fan who yelled out " Shut up, or I'll put up your rent!".
Sort of sums them up.
I've noticed a lot of hipster type Dogs fans at games, with boofy hair and skinny jeans. Are we becoming trendy??

Richmond and Essendon both hold a disproportionate percentage of adult supporters who wear matching gear to that of their children.

I don't know much about Freo supporters other than one or two of them need a bit of anger management. But I saw on their club channel once a segment detailing the history of their player's tattoos. Classy.

Richmond- The only team in the AFL where the MCG have to put messages on the big screen requesting patrons not to stand on the seats!

What and who are Brisbane supporters?
I remember that rather bimbo-ish woman throwing beer over Jonno in a sort of "shit did I do that?" manner.
Probably was the wife of someone who got a bunch of free tickets, pulled on jumper and hasn't been back since.
I hear Brisbane are really good for giving away free tickets!

Western Bulldogs: A bunch of cynics about the AFL, equalisation, fair treatment, Etihad contracts. Seem heart broken by almost every final in 30 years. Also haven't seen a winning prelim final at AFL level and are starved of success but still join as members. Have a few dickheads that go games but the club and supporters are good at weeding them out. Yet these crazies start each year with fresh hope this year is the year they've been waiting for.

The first time I remember that was in form two, (1969) when my woodwork teacher, a mad doggies supporter said to me , "don't worry next year will be our year" Well Mr Ansett, I am still waiting. :D

Melbourne, of course, do seem to have a lot of private school type following them but, only when they are doing well.
I remember a funny incident at Western Oval. We were standing in the outer near some Melbourne types - well dressed, club scarves, toffy vowelled. After half time some pretty rugged looking blokes stood in front of these guys. One of them piped up, " Excuse me, in front. I can't see anymore!" One of the blokes turned around and snarled, "Are you talking to me idiot?"
To which the private school type replied, "No, no. Just making a general observation."

Lucky Mr Ansett would have at least got to see us win a flag.
My Dad used to always say a similar thing to me, sadly he passed fifteen years ago and we never got to celebrate that allusive Grandfinal appearance together.

I'm really suspicious of Hawthorn supporters. Unless their pensioners most of them are 24 carat bandwagoners. Essendon supporters are as flaky as shark meat and absolutely tireless in bagging their own players - it's so enjoyable to see that they have so much material to work with at the moment.
Carlton - insufferable when they are doing well, conspicuous by their absence otherwise. Geelong - a bunch of provincial myopics who should not be allowed past Little River. Richmond supporters are passionate and for real. I don't mind them. Collingwood - you know when the London riots were on? Collingwood had a bye that weekend and Jetstar's prices were at an all time low - go figure.
West Coast fans - what a pity WA didn't secede in 1934 then we wouldn't have to put up with them. They could be running their own tiny comp which would suit their own tiny minds.

1974 was the first time I remeber seeing that. We lost the Elimation final and someone wrote into the Mail saying "never mind, it's such a good team we are sure to make the Grand Fiinal next year.

But would that mean Bruce would be deprived of Cyril?

Bruce could take out dual citizenship and then Woofers could spearhead a campaign to have him stripped of his Australian citizenship. I'm sure it would garner massive support from football lovers who are sick to death of his mindless warblings and assorted statistical inanities, most of which have about as much relevance to what's happening on the field as the Pope's pronouncements on birth control have to what is actually practised in Catholic bedrooms.
We should institute a "Bruce watch" to list his most useless irrelevancy each week and then vote on the year's winner.

I lived in Brisbane/Sunshine Coast for 15 years - they are the worst. I went there in 98, no-one gave a rats about AFL (at one stage I lived within walking distance of the Gabba - all the players walked around the shops in Stanley St anonymously. Went to my local there one Australia Day weekend and ended up having a couple of beers and watching the Australian Open with John Northey, who was sitting alone unrecognised).
Once they got to GFs, every second person was a loumouth, diehard expert who knew everything about AFL. Because their team was winning, all their lameass theories must apparently be correct. As soon as the glory years left, they went back to not giving a damn. Qlders are awful bandwagon riders, they do it with all sports.
Rant over.

Western Bulldogs - bleeding heart dreamers who follow a tiny little club. Can you believe anyone would follow a footy club after watching Danny Southern limping about on Year of the Dogs?:)
