Perth - what to do, see and where to eat and drink?

I'm off to Perth on the 18th for Xmas with my mother who is a bit crook.

Any Perth based WOOF folk with ideas with what to do, see and where to eat and drink? I'll be staying in Como.

Freo territory I believe is good for Cafes, Bars etc.

Can you make it to Margaret river .... great wines, close to beach, great place.

Good idea - could be tricky at Xmas. I'm looking for comfortable day trips out of Perth.

You must visit King's Park, right next to the city with great views.

Visit the C Restaurant in St George's Terrace, A revolving restaurant, pricey but good service and meals.

Go on a Captain Cook Cruise up the River Swan.

Visit Rottnest Island, ride a bike around the Island, admire the quokkas.

Go to Hamilton Street Fremantle and partake of a coffee.

Go to James Street Northbridge and have another coffee.

Take a walk around the two bridges - the Narrows and the Causway - about 9 kms.

Visit Subiaco Oval

Visit the WACA ground.

Visit the Bell Tower and take a ferry to South Perth.

Go fishing from a fishing boat and catch some giant fish.

Go to Hay Street Mall and Murray Street Mall.

Like bush-walking - go for a hike on the Bibbulmun Track.

Go to Belmont or Ascot races.

Go to Gloucester Park, Perth Trotting Track.

Go to Burswood Casino.

Like bike riding - hire a bike in Perth and cycle around the city parks. Go on the Munda Billa track - goes for about 1000 kms though.

Go to Margaret River, sample the wines, see the limestone caves.

Go to Mandurah, do some fine dining out, eat the local crabs.

Go to Mundaring weir Hotel on a Saturday night for everything good.

day trips out of Perth would take you:

1. To Wave Rock at Hyden. Travel nearly all day to get there, look at it for an hour then return.

2. The Pinnacles - same deal as Wave Rock.

3. Kalgoorlie and back in a couple of days.

4. Go to Pemberton and see the giant karri trees. Biggest trees in Australia .

5. Balloon ride at York.

6. Rottnest Island

7. Bibbulmun Track.

8. Swan Valley Wineries.

Don't go to far north of Perth, if you hit Geraldton turn back, cos you ain't from around here anymore.
Seriously though as many have said, Freo for eating and drinking, lots of beaches. Head South along the coast and you can't go too far wrong. Kalgoorlie's kind of interesting but I wouldn't go too far out of my way.

Dont go to Hyden or the Pinnacles - they are both a waste of time.
Margaret River is a long way. Too far for a day trip.

I agree with the Kings Park suggestion. Do the tree top walk.

Pemberton is too far.

Ballooning at York? Is pretty nice, but means an overnight stay.

Only go to Rottnest if it isn't too hot - the whole place is devoid of shade.

Kalgoorlie in December? No thanks.

I am moving back in a couple of weeks and my priorities are:

1/.Do the Cottesloe to North Cott and back swim and follow up with breakfast at the Cottesloe Hotel. I may very well do this every day until I have to start work again.

2/.Visit Clancy's in Freo - have a few beers, some fresh fish and fried mice in the beer garden.

3/.Surfing at Parkers Point/Strickland Bay in Rottnest. I have missed that for 3 years.

4/.Take the family up to Kings Park one afternoon evening. Do the walk, have a picnic dinner etc.

5/.Run the bridges at 7pm'ish one evening. Bbq on the South Perth Foreshore to follow.

Perth is a nice place, but the weather will dictate what you can do...if the temperature is high 30's and above, the real answer will be 'find somewhere air conditioned and do as little as possible'.

Freo- Little Creatures brewery for a pint and meal is a must. (best beer in oz)
Plus other nice pubs in Freo -sail and anchor (second best beer), norfolk

Mandurah- millionares paradise

Margaret river (the south west region) -wine and beaches

The Burswood isnt bad but i probably cant take full advantage of it because im underage.

Like other have mentioned, Kings park is a must. IIRC theres some nice running tracks there.

At Freo theres some great restaurants. Theres one on the water, i cant remember the name but its a sea food restaurant and is great for lunch. The best sea food ive ever had was from there.

The Swan river cruise is also a good one. Maybe not so for the kids. There are some beautiful houses along at river that are in excess of 50mill.

Thats about all i can remember, its been a while since ive been there.

Had lunch there a few years back. There's signs on the deck that say "don't feed the seagulls or they will shit on you".

Had lunch at a cafe on the water at Mandurah once and watched a pod of dolphins about 50 metres away.

As for saying there is 'one on the water', there are a heap of restaurants 'on the water' in Fremantle. And further south down in Mandurah. And all up the coast to Hillary's. And at various points along both rivers (Swan and Canning)....you aren't really narrowing it down a heck of a lot! :-) But yes, there is some pretty good seafood available.

Kerry Stokes house I can cop - but houses? Spare me. I know there is a housing boom, and I know a lot of development has happened since I left, but to suggest there are multitides of 50million + houses is pure fantasy. The continual carping on about home prices by my fellow sandgropers annoys me no end to be truthful. All that said, the river cruise is a nice thing to do. Or simply hire a bike and ride all the way down to the Left Bank for a beer before heading back...

Plenty of cheap fish and chips in Freo down the Esplanade way - just steer clear of Fisherman's Wharf itself. Cicerello's is a joke in terms of $.

Do you get exotic foods in the east?

There are a few restaurants around where you can get crocodile, emu, buffalo and kangaroo and a number of other unusual treats.

Go to the Fremantle markets and look at the home of the Bulldogs across the road.

A trip to the Old Fremantle prison is worthwhile. amazing things there.

The restaurants around the boats around Freo are all nice, home of the America;s cup once upon-a-time. The yachts Australia II and Gretel or some such thing are in a nearby maritime museum.

Just one tip, don't mention you barrack for the Dogs in any conversation you have! Always ends up in tears....bloody Libba...I remember that dirty team with dirty players who put Peter Sumich unconcious..... bla bla bla. I have been over here for a few years and it is so one eyed parochial it is not funny. Went to Subi for a game in 1999 and am so traumatised I have never been back or plan to! If you can get down South, M/River and Dunsborough are beautiful places to stay but at that time of year will be teaming with Perth holiday makers. In Perth I highly recommend a walk around Kings Park and a few beers at Little Creatures in Freo. If you see a guy walking around with what looks to be a Eagles cap but says f**k WCE say g'day. Most people don't pick it up. My little way of giving them the finger!!

The city goes alright for restaurants also look out for the duxton hotel, real nice place if you want a quality meal. Also around the East Perth region you will find restaurants and that.
