Bit of a lull in our season now before NAB Cup 1, so thought I'd chuck up a Trivia thread. Here's the question:
Since stats were first kept in 1965, 13 Bulldogs have racked up 40+ possessions in a single game. How many can you name?
Hints: 2 are currently on our list, 2 were on our list until the last few years, 2 mainly played in the 90s, 4 mainly in the 80s and 2 mainly in the 70s and 1 60s/70s.

Here are some names that might be in the mix
Matthew Boyd, Brian Lake, Jackson Macrae, Scott West, Ian Dunstan, Simon Atkins, Ryan Griffen and Adam Cooney
I'll put my thinking cap on for some others.

I reckon I've missed Stoneham and I would probably add Featherby as a possibility.
Do hit outs count? Perhaps Dempsey?

I remember challenging the merits of the 41 possession Lake performance. Hardly had an opponent and he just kept chipping it sideways after he received it from someone else. I think it was against Richmond.
I didn't have him in my best players on the day.

West and Hawkins both did it but have already been guessed. Libba surprisingly never did it (tackles don't count) - his best was 37.
So 1 left - this player was the most surprising to me also (other than Lake, I'd forgotten his one).

Super Macpherson is a massive surprise.
Wasn't Lake's 41 possession game against North when he took over 20 marks?
I also remember him getting a stack of the ball against Brisbane one year (might have been Aker's first game against his former club).
Mofra
17-02-2016, 09:09 AM
I have to note - Jackson Macrae's 43 possession game is arguably the most impressive of the lot. That day against Gold Coast he became the first teenager ever to manage more than 40 touches in a game, and he kicked 2 goals to go with his 43 touches.
At best he's behind Bonti & Libba as midfielders, arguably Wallis (going by B&F results) and Stringer will run through there and have more impact. God it's a good time to be a Bulldog.

You're right CBM, the Lake game was against North (Etihad, R9 2010) - a bizarre game. He took 22 marks and only 7 of his possessions were contested. His next best ever possessions game was 28, so it was a real anomaly and, as GVG Jr has noted, of dubious merit.
You're also right about the Lions game (it was R11 2007), which was one of Lake's 28 possession games - mostly memorable for his insane marks tally of 24, the all time record for a Bulldog since marking stats were began in the 60s (Lake is the only Dog ever to take 20+ in a match).

I didn't want to waste my five minutes research, so this is a good a thread as any for stats. Last year:
Liam Jones: 9 games, 65 disposals, 31 marks, 7 goals.
Caleb Daniel: 10 games (effectively 7-8 allowing for sub), 131 disposals, 23 marks, 6 goals.

There was a howling cross breeze and Steve Macpherson had a set shot from 30 metres out in the dying seconds and kicked a point. He later admitted aiming for the point post and ensuring a draw rather than risking a shot on goal that could've dragged away from a score entirely, made me so mad.

I'll let the 8th run for a few hours and then I'll give the year.

Bloody good question. I remember the Richmond draw at Docklands when Nathan Brown thought that Richmond had won and made a bit of a fool of himself celebrating hard. 2008?
That was the game where Lake had a mark inside 50 on the siren and was unable/(unwilling) to take the kick. Big Wilbur slotted the goal for the tie that preserved our unbeaten start to the season.

I think I have tried to blot most of that end of season from my memory cells. I even had purchased a new top to wear to the footy that I first wore to I think the Eagles game in that run. Never worn it to the footy since.
Process of elimination would perhaps lead me to think Gia as the most likely to have kicked the goal in question.

I was gonna say Nick Bruton, but he didn't play a senior game for us.
I remember the last seven of those draws clearly. I'm not gonna research my answers cause I'm relying on my memory, so feel free to correct me.
The one in 1995 against Collingwood, we led by 23 points at 3/4 time. We kicked the first two goals of the final term to open up a 35-point lead. Collingwood then went on a rampage and we had stopped to a pulp. I actually remember Sav Rocca having the ball about 60 out with less than one minute to go with the scores level. I thought then and there we had dropped all four points. Thankfully we held on for two points, which is two points more than we had accumulated in the previous six matches. Our six match losing streak was followed by a draw against Collingwood, then five straight wins. We were robbed in the drawn match, though, because Dermie kicked the clearest behind you are ever likely to see, but was paid a goal. There is no way that would happen in this day and age with the review system.
1996 v Hawthorn. Similar story to the Collingwood game. We surrended a seemingly comfortable lead in the last quarter, only for Hawthorn to go on a late rampage to tie the game. Darren Pritchard was running into an open goal in the dying stages to win them the game, but his kick missed to the left and the one point lead turned into scores being level and the siren sounding soon after.
1999 v Hawthorn. My main memory from this game is goal umpire Craig Clarke half way through his action of signalling a rushed behind to Hawthorn, but Todd Curley was aware of the scores being tied and just managed to keep the ball in before it crossed over for a rushed behind. The goal umpire probably wasn't aware of the scores being level, and he went to do what would be done 99.9% of the time, being signalling a behind for a rushed behind. Had he realised the scores were level, he probably wouldn't have been so premature. I was gutted after this game, because we were in great form having knocked off second-placed Brisbane at the GABBA the week before, and that match was played in 3 inches of rain (the famous game where Libba eye gauged a Brisbane player - maybe Craig Lambert)? We had an extra five scoring shots than the Hawks in the drawn match, and had we kicked more accurately and won, we actually would have won six in a row, which is something we rarely do.
2002 v Essendon. This time it was us who finished stronger. We kicked the final three goals of the game to hit the front, before Kretiuk gave away a free kick to Lloyd on the siren. We were one point up and all looked lost, but Lloyd's kick missed and we held on for a draw. This was the game that Hird and Lloyd made their returns from injury. Lloyd's finger was constantly attacked by Kretiuk all night, while Hird returned from his horrific facial injury he suffered in Perth after receiving some friendly fire from Mark Johnson earlier in the year. I walked out of the ground on this night thinking Kieran McGuiness would make a fine player, and I thought Daniel Bandy was the best thing since sliced bread. Grant kicked a phenomenal goal tucked in on the boundary line late in the last quarter to start our comeback.
2003 v West Coast. That famous goal by Sampi. I think it was Johnson's 200th game. We were massive, massive underdogs but a fine performance from Nathan Brown almost got us over the line. We were 13 points up with 2:30 remaining and blew it. Matthew Robbins panicked in the last line of defence with 30 seconds to go, and eventually got the ball to Murphy under pressure, whose quick kick was marked by Embley. Embley then swung around onto his right foot and kicked it long to Sampi, who appeared to mark it uncontested in the end (despite Bulldogs defenders being in the vicinity).
2006 v Richmond. It's funny that all these draws seem to have a team coming from way behind (apart from Hawthorn in 1999). We looked absolutely dead and buried in this game. Two Richmond supporters in front of me jeered something along the lines of, "yes, finally!! I can't remember the last time we have won two in a row." Nek minute, Bulldogs go bang, bang, bang, and we share the points. Lake (or should I say Harris) took a contested mark in the forward line late on, faked an injury, gave the ball to Minson, who kicked the levelling goal. Siren sounded and Nathan Brown jumped for joy thinking he had got one over his former side. Haha!
2007 v St. Kilda. Once again, this game produced another spectacular comeback, again by the Bulldogs. We were in terrible form, having come off a couple of thumping defeats at the hands of Geelong and West Coast. This one appeared headed in the same direction before we mounted a late comeback to hit the front by one point (was it Skipper who took a contested mark and put us in front in the last quarter)? I then remember Jason Gram launching one hell of a massive torp from half back with ten seconds left, which seemed to travel 70m before being marked by Riewoldt with his head facing toward goal. He then kicked a behind and the siren sounded.

Stoneham No.
Already got Smith.
The last one is tough, I'll give more of a clue. He played with us for a few years in the 70s towards the end of his career.

That's the one. Top get, I thought he'd be last to go.
Nice quizzing all round there.

Did we miss one? Who was the second last one that was a recent player?

Thanks PP.
Lot of fun that and really jogs the old memory cells.
Unfortunately, I can't come up with anything at this point to continue with.

By the way, Bulldog Joe got the last one, so he's up (unless someone has a good one they're itching to put up).

I'll go again.
Only five of our currently listed players have played 100 games.
Two parter: Who are they, and who are the next 5?

I'd go Picken in place of Wood.
Next 5; Wood, Dahl, JJ, Roughy, Koby?

Allow me to reword. Who are the next 5 in games for the Bulldogs?
The 5 that are 100 are Murph, Boyd, Morris, Minno and Picken.

OK WD54.
This one relates to clearances (first clear possession from a stoppage), a stat first gathered in the early 90s.
Since that time, a Bulldog has won 12 clearances or more in a game 19 times, between 8 players. One player amazingly has done it 9 times, one player 4 times and 6 players once.
Who can name them.

Is Scott West our 19 time man?
And Libba.
Or vice versa, they played 590 games between them.

Sorry, it's 19 times all up, of which one guy got 9.
Westy is there, he did it 4 times, and Libba did it once.
That leaves 6 players, 1 who did it 9 times, and 5 who did it once.

I am going to be sneaky and say Luke Darcy. His 2002 season was spectacular and I reckon he may have lead clearances that year.

West, Cooney and Griffen would have been the first three players mentioned for mine.

I can't believe Libba only did it once. I thought he had plenty more than that. I thought he was top two in clearances a couple of years ago.
It's got me stuffed who has done it nine times.

Sorry guys got distracted. Answers so far:
Correct: West (4), Libba Snr, Griffen, Darcy,
Incorrect: Cooney, Minson, Hudson, Ward, Picken, Macrae,

Actually you are correct CBM. The Libba in the earlier answer was Libba Snr (who did it once). You've identified Libba Jnr who is the 9 timer (what an unbelievable stat for such a young guy).
That still leaves 3 players who have done it once.

It really is. I couldn't resist this area as a quiz topic, really just as a way to talk about how freakish young Libba is. I think we forget (I certainly did before looking at the tables).
All those 9 games were in 2 seasons as well ('13 and '14) - given he was so young and in such mediocre teams, it really is mindboggling. His clearance numbers are more than 20% higher than the best season of anyone we have ever had since the stat was collected, as are his tackle numbers (even 20% higher than his dad).
If he's near his best this year, it's gonna be so much fun.:)

Boyd is a yes, but not Cross, Romero or Atkins.
That leaves 2 to get. Both a bit surprising, played mostly in the 90s.

The 'played mostly in the 90s' part makes me think Stephen Powell.
