THE AFL has scrapped the Grand Final replay, with extra time to decide this year's premiership in the case of a draw.


The League confirmed the historic decision on Tuesday following a meeting of the AFL Commission.


A Grand Final replay has taken place three times – in 1948, 1977 and most recently in 2010 when St Kilda lost to Collingwood.


Under the new rules in the case of a draw, two five-minute halves each way, plus time on, will be played to decide a winner.


If the scores are still tied at the end of the second period, the siren will not ring until the next score, which will decide the flag.

Surely in the unlikely event it goes to golden score it should be golden goal? Do we really want a grand final decided by a barrel out of the middle of the ground that some lumbering ruckman punches through for a behind?

Not opposed to no replay and extra time is reasonable, but golden score seems ridiculous.

I not to sure on the rule that if scores are still locked at the end of the second extra time period the ball isn't bought back the middle for a centre bounce. The siren doesn't even sound to indicate the second period is over. Its the next score then the siren.

Golden goal doesn't work....imagine the scores are level after 2 periods of extra time (14.5.89 each), we pepper the goals in "golden goal" time kicking 8 or 9 points and lose when the oppo get a charity free and 50 metres and kick a goal to win 15.5.95 to 14.14.98. It would be fitting to be the 1st team in history to lose in this way.

Best solution. Play 5 minutes each way, and if scores are still level play an extra 5 minute period until the deadlock is broken. The game will be at the MCG so there is rarely any wind advantage.

Next best solution. If the 2 teams are still level after extra time, sound the siren, give the teams a 5 minute rest and then play next score wins so everyone knows what is at stake.

The problem with the new rule (not sounding the siren when the sudden death period begins) is shown in the 2012 TAC Grand Final - neither Oakleigh or Dandenong knew that next score wins, so when Jackson Macrae kicks the premiership winning point he is disappointed that he missed a goal, only to hear the siren moments later and start celebrating.
