God it's an awful look. Players should get on with playing the game. I can't believe the culture of the game has been eroded to something resembling cricket where there's an appeal for virtually everything. When did the umpires have their position undermined and why has it been allowed? I might sound like a grumpy 80 year old, but it's garbage.

Typical afl , they just over correct a rule that had nothing wrong with it.

The umpires have had their position undermined due to these factors IMO:
1. Their inconsistency and/or inability.
2. The rule tinkering, making their job even harder.

It is a reflection on our society.

The game is coached and played to within an inch of its life, every play and contest involves players pushing the boundaries of the rules to get an advantage or hesitating so as not to give away a free. There a dozens of occasions throughout a game where you could infringe and win the ball or don't and lose it. If the opposition does and gets away with it, they get a real advantage
