View Full Version : Bankers And Anchors - Round 15 2016 vs Sydney Swans
Eastdog
24-06-2016, 12:08 PM
This is the round 15 2016 edition of the Weekly Bankers and Anchors Thread. Once the game against Sydney Swans is concluded post your nominations for:
The Bankers = 3 guys/aspects of the game that we banked on to do the right thing during the game
The Anchors = 3 guys/aspects of the game that weighed us down by their errors or poor play
Please limit it to no more than three of each player or aspect of the game, but feel free to make honourable/dishonourable mentions. As usual try to make it constructive criticism.
Try and restrict it to individual players rather than aspects of the overall match - I will allow more freedom now as the thread seems to be going down more of the aspects of the game path so you can have 3 for each made up of aspects of the game and individual players.
The thread is named in honour of a popular WOOF Contributor, The Banker, who passed away on 22/04/2012 after a six month battle with cancer.

B:
Match Committee. Wood s crucial. Smith was a bull. Minson took his chance. Webb. JJ the winner.
Bonts & Libba's third quarters. Amazing. Bonts involvement in kicking winning goals or goal assists in close wins is what champions do.
Winning with everything against us in that last 7 minutes.
A:
Umpires. Borderline cheating.
Adams kick that turned the momentum in the last.

Adams kick that turned the momentum in the last.
Felt so bad for him after that. Had to mind Franklin while Sydney was on top and it seemed to go to him all the time. He'd be very happy and relieved we pinched it.

B:
The ins. Smith JJ Wood in the second half and to a lesser extent Minson and Webb.
Bont and Libba lifting to get us in the game and over the line.
Boyd and Morris for their ever steady presence
A: Adam's last quarter. That kick especially
Dickson and Sucking. They've been out of sorts and I'm tempted to send them to Footscray for a bit considering the basic errors they make
Umpires for getting so many so wrong. A few went our way (mostly Stringer's in the back and Dickson's head high) but there were some truly confounding calls for Sydney (Buddy can headlock you and if he falls over then that's your fault)

Bonti - he is a special player
Libba - when he gets going his off
JJ - the winning goal
Getting another win interstate again against a highly fancied opponent is sweet.
Anchors
Our field kicking and skills at times lets us down
Redpath - quiet day but did a few good things

B.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man.. JJ.
Clay Smith- just so thrilled for this young man to taste the highs after 3 years of the lows.
First Libba then Bont - both superhuman in the 3rd...
I know we're only allowed 3, but I have to also give a thumbs up to our selection committee. I was sure we'd brought too many underdone guys in as well as picked Clay too early. They got them right.. Well done.
A.
Adams... hopefully got a valuable education tonight.. thankfully did not pay the ultimate price for his shanked kick. If it was the first one he'd done this year it could be waved away, but it's probably the fourth or fifth one he's done like that.
Our delivery inside 50.. why are we still so crap at taking the right option when we get the ball 60 or 70 out.

BANKERS
Wilbur/JJ set shots in dying stages. Nailed them. Match winners.
Clay Smith's vice like grip on the ball in close.
Libba. That hair has to stay.
ANCHORS
Dickson had a shocker. Played himself out of the team.
Redpath well held and just couldn't get near it.
Morris not getting a free for head high contact and the commentary excusing it.

Bankers: Macrae, Clay Smith and Wallis for playing bedrock roles.
Anchors: Dickson's game was his third sub-standard one in a row. Needs to find form in the VFL.
Redpath did his infamous lateral pass turn over for the third game in a row and saw little of the ball all day. Probably time to find form in the VFL.

1. Impossible to separate the Herculean efforts of Bont and Libber
2. Cool calm Caleb. - what a gem
3. The often under rated Jack Macrae - gee he hits hard these days.
anchors:
1. big Red's tendency to go missing
2. Dwayne. What a silly name. What a silly man.
3. Our inability to contain Buddy. If he'd kicked straight we might be feeling a bit differently tonight.

It's amazing that the commentators inferred Morris shouldn't have had his head down in that instance. If he'd had his head up he'd have snapped his neck.

Umpires must just not have liked Morris' head. Buddy had it in a headlock earlier and Morris was penalised for his head holding Buddy's inside elbow. Amazing feat to defy physics like that.

Bankers
1. Hunter - While he gets criticised for his disposal at times, his constant ability to run to position to be a link up player is outstanding
2. JJ - to kick that goal, after that game after 10 weeks out was unbelievable
3. Roughead- season has been fantastic. Has improved his contested marking hugely.
Anchors
1. Redpath - just bugger all influence at all
2. Suckling- his worst game for us. Kicking was terrible
3. Adams- God, could you imagine having to play on Franklin. Jeez.

Bankers - The young leaders lifting ( libba and the Bont )
- answering the Sydney last term challenge
- the bye , it's refreshed our side
Anchors - Allowing Sydney backs to out Mark our forwards. Jake has to get more consistently involved.
- allowing Franklin's WWE manoeuvre on Dale Morris WTF . The AFL's over correction dept now deems head high tackles as non existent
- Bombing in to two and three on one's. We look so much more dangers when we hit up forward 50 targets

Bankers
1. Winning the close ones builds BELIEF.
2. Match commitee made bold decisions and got them right.
3. Dale Morris and Matthew Boyd - soaked up the constant pressure; leading from the front.
Anchors.
1. We were often outmarked in our forward 50. Delivery has to be better and we really need Tom Boyd up forward.
2. Decision against Dale Morris was absurd.
3. Healy, Dumbstall and Duhwayne - their commentary is SO pedestrian. You could be forgiven if you thought they were commenting on the croquet final between the Rupanyup CWA and the Derry and Thoms Soft Toy Department - truly awful.

Bankers-
Clay Smith- refusal to give up on the contest, winning the ball and dishing it out to Hunter who goaled. That never say die attitude
near goal is super important.
JJ- CLUTCH
Libba- that third quarter, massive.
WOOF- spent last night in RCH with the little one, this site helped keep me sane.
Anchors
Adams- Ordinary today, really struggled with Buddy (many do) but some of his decision making and execution with the ball was horrendous.
Hannebery- cheers for the 50, your sooking afterwards just showed a complete lack of understanding of the rules. Look forward to that incident being on the rules of the game dvd, for a textbook 50m penalty infringement.
Dicko- had a shocker

Got home just in time to watch the last 5 minutes on replay.
Massive anchor to the Fox Footy commentary team. One of the most tension filled endings to a game I've ever experienced and ripe for some classic calling to build it to a crescendo, yet watching it on the box you would have been forgiven thinking it was a bloody guided tour through the city morgue.
Fingers crossed AFL 360 do the quad call segment where they take some footage and overlay it with different commentary teams.
As Bulldogs supporters but more importantly as football fans in general, we deserved better.

1. Libba's third quarter was incredible, kicking and creating 4 goals
2. Stringers two quick goals to keep us in it, after Swans looked like kicking away.
3. JJ's goal
Anchors
Two horrendous missed decisions against Morris - Franklin round the neck, and bump on Morro's head while he was trying to pick up the ball.

Dunstall, Russell, Healy, the main culprits. Bazza is on special comments- he's harmless enough. The others are woeful.

Bankers
1. Caleb Daniel - the little moments of poise. So calm and collected when others are rushed.
2. Libba and the Bont lifting in the 3rd after have below par first 2 quarters.
3. JJ - you could of excused him if he had missed that set shot after not playing for 10 weeks. Well he didn't and we won and he is a star.
4. Picken goes unheralded week in week out. His physical pressure he brings to the side is priceless.
Anchors
1. Redpath. Needs to be much better than that. I want to see Jack and Tom Boyd play together but it looks unlikely at this point.
2. Marcus Adams had his pants pulled down. Buddy had him beaten before the ball even arrived a lot of the time.
3. Sorry guys I know there is a couple of Bankers for Libba's hair but come on, surely that's an anchor. He's played plenty of terrific games with a normal person haircut.

The lonely travellers along the road to injury recovery. Welcome home.
Hunter - lives up to his name.
Minno - never been complimented by his kicking, but deserves it for slotting a key goal when we badly needed it, under pressure.
Anchors - Buddy Franklin's 5 goals. Defense:(
Tory - awful lack of confidence going into 50.

BANKERS
Efficient finishing - 12.3 in the final 3 quarters was a wonderful return given previous weeks
Boyd/Morris - True rocks allowing Wood and JJ to play attacking roles upon return
Midfield depth - With Smith's impressive return and continued good form elsewhere, our depth and hardness must intimidate opposition midfields. With Koby still to return, we'll take a power of beating through the middle of the ground
ANCHORS
Suckling - Has been really good this year, but had a poor game, repeatedly going for dodgy options and trying dinky kicks when it wasn't his day for attempting the cute stuff. Hope tapes are reviewed thoroughly.
Redpath - Big step backwards, struggling to impact contests and confidence seemingly dropping. Disappointingly failed to lay a single tackle - needs to lift intensity levels when the game is not unfolding his way.
Dickson - Another who seemed down on confidence and clunked opportunities.

Redpath - interesting debate. Poor on the stat sheet, but for some of the delivery into our 50 was terrible. Picken, Bont all had moments to spot him up and ended up kicking it as long as they could. Red did a lot of body work, crashing packs and impacting contests, even though may have not had a tackle 'technically'. Maybe a borderline anchor for me. Doesn't quite have the running game to get involved if the delivery is limiting his game.

Bankers:
Libba's 3rd qtr - 2 goals & 2 goal assists in about 10min of play really got us going.
JJ - Doesn't waste a disposal and his run & carry was a great addition to the team.
Will to win - We made lots of mistakes, but we kept coming.. Nice that a coupel of young guys showed some poise when needed.
Anchors:
Bad decisons/ bad execution - Lots of skill errors & 'bombs' in the last qtr... Without a big target we need to get smarter with the ball.
Ineffective forwards - as per other comments we got very little out of Redpath & Dickson.
Picken - I love his ability to win the ball, but it would be nice if he kicked it to us every so often.

We've really missed him and Murph using that pace and agility to buy themselves time. None of our other defenders have that same ability to control the tempo of the game like they do (partly because they don't have the option of speeding it up by going for a quick run) and it usually means resorting to quick handballs to teammates in a not much better position until we get someone loose. This is usually good enough but starts to fall apart when real pressure is applied.
always right

B:
1. Roughy....not sure what's happened but his marking has come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks. Even in our loss against the cats his marking was excellent.
2. JJ makes us such a better team because he has a point of difference. Looking forward to getting Dahl back as we then have two desperadoes with pace.
3. Daniel to Bont to JJ. Couldn't have been three better players to have the ball in their hands.
A:
1. Suckling. Has played some excellent games but he needs to know the time and place to go for the ambitious kicks.
2. Dickson. Buggered up so many passages. So out of form.
3. Redpath. Love the big lug but even when you are battling to get your hands on the pill you can make contests and bring the ball to ground.
