I wonder about bringing two long term injury recoverers back in the same team. Hopefully JJ and Clay have developed a weird sort of osmosis while working in recovery together and all day it will be "Johanissen runs through the centre and, oh, how did he find Clay Smith that time? All day he's been finding Smith in the forward 50. Another Bulldog goal, they lead by 91 points, 12 minutes into the second quarter"

Our kicking inside 50 is poor, but our forwards ability to compete in the air is worse.

It's an around the ground issue as well.

We completely go to water skills wise when the screws are turned against us.

A positive to take out of the quarter was our work rate was where it needed to be. If we can bring Redpath, Stringer, Bontempelli and Dickson (up forward) into the game then we'll turn things around.

Years back we had the Wog Squad, I'd like to start a new group;

The "millionaires club".
Stringer, MaCrae, Hunter and Suckling.

When they it comes off its brilliant and looks a million bucks, but they just don't do the basics.

We are carrying a few players well down on form at the minute :(

westbulldog
02-07-2016, 05:44 PM

We just need a bit of luck to tall our way and a few of the boys to stand up in the 2nd half. We are getting a lot right.

A couple of goals to big Jack would help.

ledge
02-07-2016, 05:46 PM
We just don't spot up well going forward , either our forwards aren't running to right space or we aren't delivering it into them right.
Just thinking Boyd would have been handy today.
Why do the opposition seem to be to big and take marks against us all the time .. The last two games sides look bigger and stronger than us.
10 points isn't bad, if that was our bad half we will win easy if it was our good half we are in trouble.

Jeanette54
02-07-2016, 05:47 PM
The take-away message from the first half is that we are in this. We haven't been good, too many errors and players down on their form. The good news is that it is up to us what happens in the second half.

Is Redpath even playing? No forward presence at all.

jeemak
02-07-2016, 05:55 PM
Redpath is likely having difficulty with the SCG and the way the game's played on it. Given he's only been on screen once or twice for the whole game.

If we can get Libba into the game, and get the ball going forward in the hands of Daniel we'll be in better shape. We need Dickson to hit the scoreboard too.

always right
02-07-2016, 05:55 PM
Even if he's not getting the ball, Repath needs to make a contest. Been a non-contributor so far.

We need to reduce our disposal errors to win this....and start winning the ball more out if the middle.

I'm not sure there's a player I prefer to have the ball in his hands at crunch moments than Daniel.

We'd gone back to "just bomb it" territory, and he was just cool as a cucumber. What a player.

So pleased for Clay Smith.

A shame I wasn't there. Would have been a great interstate trip. What a win and just so vital in the context of our season. Top 4 looms if we keep it going and keep getting wins. JJ the hero in the end with the goal - great to have him back. Libba was excellent especially in the 3rd. Jong tried very hard. Picken was solid. Bonti and Stringer very good.

What football can do to you if we lost bad night and if we won which we did great night.

Amazing win. Really they had the momentum in the last. We just started to turn it our way but didn't seem like we had the legs or composer to get back in front. Enter Caleb, the bont and JJ. I was furious the Bont handed it off as I thought for sure, a-la Crows game, he would kick it. But JJ I will never doubt you again. Love that it was the young guys who got us over the line too.

Wowee. What a finish! I was listening on the radio and the guy said there was 30 seconds left when Bont took the mark and then he says "oh no" and then "is it a mark? Johanissen? Yes! I thought he'd grassed it" That's when I stopped punching the ground. I thought we'd *!*!*!*!ed it up. But the Bont doesn't *!*!*!*! things up.

I've seen it since and JJ was close enough to touch Bont on the shoulder and had time to back up far enough for it to be a mark when Bont kicked it to him. I never thought I'd see the Sydney defence so slack and disorganised.

Think of the mindset of a bloke playing his first game in ten or so weeks. It's the last 30 seconds of the match and he's out of petrol tickets. The ball is in the hands of the team's best player 50m out with the final chance to win the game.

He then has the vision to see that the opposition has left a hole at CHF and makes a snap decision to run to space and be the man to take the responsibility for getting the team across the line.

Most would have been happy (relieved) to simply leave the responsibility to Bonts. It says something about the confidence many of our players have and the belief the coaches have instilled.

Mind you.....imagine if the kick had been intercepted. We would have been criticising Bonts for not taking the responsibility and JJ for an untimely decision.:p

It good that we now have another young player who has slotted the match winning goal from a set shot with immense pressure and against a top team (arguably the best team) on their home turf. That goes a long way to build character, a winner character. The Bont has had his turn and showed he can hold his nerve and now we know JJ can be the man as well.

Gee I love this club and the current list and coaches.

Early on in the season I called his skills "elite", but he wasn't an elite player, yet. The kid then went on to match Sam Mitchell. He has a very sharp football brain and the skills to do what his brain wants him to. Its only a matter of time.

So important to bank the 4 points in these close ones.

This was a turning point IMO. Bonts would have kicked from maybe 54m, an outside chance from there. JJ wasn't happy with that. Despite the risk that the siren would blow, that the umpire would call not 15, that the kick would miss the target or that Sydney would get in the way, he made space and demanded the ball

Suckling was doing cartwheels calling for it on the other side of the ground too as Bonts took the mark. These blokes believe they can do it and want the responsibility to prove it

Unbelievable win.

Sydney had strong momentum a number of times during the game, had home ground advantage, their best players couldn't have played better (Franklin, Kennedy, Hanneberry, Parker) and we looked like we'd blown it late. Plus there's little doubt Sydney had last year in their memory - they wanted to atone for it.

Huge, huge win.

Definitely believing. Can we win it THIS year? I'm not sure. Our best is proven to be good enough, can we do it week after week? We will soon find out. I wish we had Murphy.

This is a good old fashioned example of an umpire needing to be dropped for a long while. There are bad calls, and then this in its own category. And with 4 umpires this was paid. 1 paid it and three went along with it. Ergo, four umpires is a waste of time, effort and money.

Just had another look at the final passage of play that led to JJ's match winning goal on the last kick of the game.

Ok, it has been noted that Smith applied a crunching tackle, forcing the defender to spill it loose.
Wallis then got the loose ball and handballed to Caleb Daniel.
What needs to be noted is the manoeuvre Daniel pulls when he gets the ball to make space for himself.

It was the old fashioned blind turn. Perfectly executed.

Take a look if you don't believe me.

The same Luke Ball that said the free kick against Courtney Dempsey for his tackle on the West Coast player was the correct decision. Was a perfect tackle but apparently now that is too forceful, it's an absolute joke.

So I'm sure he would say that Dale initiated the contact by grabbing Buddy's arm and wrapping it around his neck.
