With Dangerfield last year, I can see more clubs being open to trade a year out if it's a better outcome. Motlop could be a first rounder trade this year, or maybe second round compo next year. Fyffe could be a massive injection of picks to rebuild Freo if GCS are serious about it. No surprise a lot of names on the list have been mentioned in trade rumours.

Maybe, I lifted it from an article from early August. If he's done his ACL he's not going anywhere in any event.

Agreed. Very good player but not elite but clearly North think they can get him there.
I guess players are worth what the market dictates though but it's a long contract that is probably heavily front loaded.
I think this is a clear indication that North are going to try and load up again for a tilt in a couple of years.

It's slightly less than we offered Boyd. These types of deals are going to become the norm over the next 5 years. We really were the catalyst for this. If you want a particular player, and North need a highly skilled, pacy mid then you need to go harder than everyone else, particularly when you're unfashionable and at the start of a rebuild.

Wouldn't say we were the catalyst .. Alister lynch was the first then Franklin , probably a few others too.
Remember the cap is jumping quite a bit so jj getting offered 700,000 (if you believe it) won't be that big if you load your contracts to players at the right years , whether it's front , mid or back ended, that's the list management trick.

Kelly is a midfielder though and while he's supposedly quit skilled does he have any point of difference that would make him elite?

An interesting little tidbit from an article about North's Josh Kelly offer:
Josh Kelly must decide if he wants to play in premierships or chase a big contract, writes Jon Ralph (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/more-news/josh-kelly-must-decide-if-he-wants-to-play-in-premierships-or-chase-a-big-contract-writes-jon-ralph/news-story/e4684462ffd659e9347d9ea30bda26a7)
As recently as last month Kelly was exclusively negotiating with the Giants on a two-year extension, unwilling to consider other offers from clubs including the Dogs.

I think Hawthorn will be desperate to get back into the first round this year. Gunston has two years, worth $650,000 a year, to run at Hawthorn. I wonder if he's gettable (with a Bevo connection) if Hawthorn want a first rounder (and a player more than likely) and think they can go with the following successfully:
Puopolo Roughead Rioli
Cicily O'Brien/Schoenmakers Bruest
They then have more than enough salary cap to land either Fyfe or Martin, in addition to a gaining first rounder and player.
Gunston has shown most worthy as the third tall. If a team could offer him the same circumstances where he's excelled, lesser defenders due to other good top end forwards, he would be an amazing get.

A gun midfielder or key defender would be a more pressing need than a 3rd tall in the forward line. Great player of course, but I think our draft picks are better spent elsewhere.

It depends, I think. Firstly, if Morris plays on next year and Zaine, Collins & Adams develop well enoug, looking at free agents Trangrove or Hansen. Not sure we can land a gun midfielder, as Prestia & Treloar wanted 'big clubs' and Kelly has $9,000,000 reasons to go to North. If Clokey is a two year stop gap, and Tom Boyd is going to be rucking large chunks of games and Stringer also increasing his midfield time, Gunston might be a great addition in affording flexibility to using Boyd, Cloke, Stringer & Crameri in multiple roles.

PERTH radio is claiming former Brownlow Medalist and current Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe will sign a $1.5 million deal with St Kilda at the end of the season.
Fyfe is this year’s most sought-after free agent, with the future of the talented midfielder likely to be speculated on throughout the entirety of the campaign.
And radio host Brad Fitzgerald, part of the ‘Carmen and Fitzi’ program on 96FM in Perth, revealed he had been told news of Fyfe’s move by a “high-ranking board member” at the Saints.
“The offer is worth $1.5 million a season and it is — as far as legally wise — virtually accepted,” Fitzgerald said.
“He can’t sign yet but it’s basically a done deal and he is going to St Kilda.
“I can’t name names but this has come from a high-ranking board member of St Kilda.”
Fyfe is averaging 26.8 disposals per game this season, having missed the majority of the side’s 2016 campaign with a broken leg.
He is out of contract at the end of this year.

Wow, close to $2.4M tied up in Fyfe & Carlisle. They'd want a big rise in the salary cap, as that's around 25% of the cap in two players. Assuming Freo don't play hardball, say they'll match it and demand the Hawthorn pick.

I don't think there's room for a genuine tagger, rather, someone who can play a tight role in close when it's 50-50 and can spread and be used as a forward carrying or linking option a few times a quarter whilst hopefully sneaking forward to kick a goal.
The really good players don't like being accountable themselves a lot of the time. Sure they tackle when they need to often, but they tend not to be too flash on the spread and nothing drops a players confidence level like having a negative player kick a goal on them.
If you can get a midfielder who can play tight, spread and use the ball well then that's ideal. We do have one in Libba, mind you.

Won't be high quality!
On Buddy, I get a feeling that even if he tails off in his later years, he'll be a different player who's filled out and still has unusually high athleticism for a bloke of his size. He'll always be a hard, hard match up and a distraction for the opposition. Time will tell, I guess. He's a freak.

I should follow up and say that the issue with Buddy's contract is not so much the length, but the fact that, I understand it, his remuneration is weighted heavily to the middle years of his deal. That is, years 4-6 see him earning much more than in years 1-3 and 7-9. Or at least that was how it was reported at the time.
If that's correct, something has to give from elsewhere on the list. Even with the 20% EBA bump up.

Plus Bird, Malckski, arguably Richards and possibly either Jones or Reid this year. And they've not won a flag while their midfield has been at its peak. Plus it pissed off their last defender of COLA in Chairman Mike Fitxpatrick. It's made them money, but as a whole, there's a lot of pros and cons.

I also think a quick, skillful midfielder is a higher priority or possibly line ball with KPD.
If I had to choose one of Kelly or Lever I'd take Kelly on perceived needs basis. (Aware he would cost more, is possibly too expensive and that we do not want to join a bidding war). Hoping Bont can have a whisper in Kelly's ear and that he has a chat with Bevo so he can make an informed decision.
If we did get Lever I'd still be happy though !!
Are there any other quick, skilled midfielders (other than Kelly, Martin and Rockliff) that might want to leave their clubs, incl. those still contracted where we might stand a chance e.g. someone at club has some ties with, those that have been injured a bit? I think I read somewhere ?BF? about Whitfield as a possibility. I'd have to put aside my prejudices regarding his hiding to avoid drug test plus playing faux tough guy in prelim, plus (and this is really unfair of me I know) that I have labelled him the chinless one...If he came to Dogs I think I could rewire my brain (maybe). Wonder if he passes our "good guy" policy?

Zak Jones has had a break out year and remains unsigned (crossing threads but maybe our Daniel Kerr type).
Jacob Hopper is more of an unknown at this juncture but should become a long term mid option under strong development and developing alongside Marcus. Brings the added bonus of striking GWS.

Thanks Doc26. I do not watch that many other AFL games. Who does Zak play for, does he come from Vic? And what do you know about Hopper? Would love to steal some more their good players without paying heaps for them. Ta in advance.

Brother of Nathan Jones at Melbourne but plays for Sydney.
Jones you may recall was the Swans player who took the open hit on Travis earlier in the season - probably doesn't help to sell his value to us.
Hopper is a highly touted big body mid who has been on GWS's list for close to 2 seasons now. Mixture of age, injuries and difficulty of breaking into such a deep midfield has limited his opportunity and is coming out of contract. GWS would not want to lose him particularly with Kelly a chance to leave.

Motlop is a curious case. No one enquired on him being shopped last year. Surely no club would make him a decent FA offer now, and surely on his output this whole contract, Geelong shouldn't offer a decent offer either. Maybe he's forced to take a $150,000 a season pay cut to stay at Geelong and hope Cockatoo doesn't get and stay fit. But if he does, they're paying him $400,000 a year to play VFL. Glad it's not my problem.

The difference between Motlop's best and worst is miles apart , and at this stage of his career that ain't changing .

Motlop family have a history of outstanding highlights but rare and more downs than ups.

The FA list is slowly dwindling down, with Reid & Martin likely to re-sign.
Of what's left, I'd be happy with Rockliff, Kruezer, Trengrove & McKenzie.

Kreuzer has re-signed with Carlton today.
Pool is getting shallower.

Its more like a parental supervised kids wading area, as opposed to a pool now.
So a hypothetical question, what would we think if two years in a row our list was losing talent and nor bringing in comparable talent?

Need badly to poach a key position player at least, whilst our recruiters have been brilliant at the draft they are sadly letting us down in this area,

How quickly we forget 2016 .. Won a premiership so we must have done it right.
How can you be let down when you achieved the ultimate doing what we did recruiting / draft wise.
