I thought I'd get in early and start the thread for the Grand Final which I'm so happy to say we are finally involved in. Yes! Doggies!

I would say we would put our predictions in once the teams are announced and this will also be the game day thread as well.

Also to discuss stuff during the week leading up to the big one.

How fricken great is it that we get to the big dance and it is our opponent that has all those issues. How much do we deserve that after all the broken down, hobbled teams we have had to take into finals. Momentum is massive, it'll take an army to stop us come Saturday.

Father-sons to the fore as Grand Final record gets ready to fall (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-09-28/fathersons-to-the-fore-as-grand-final-record-gets-ready-to-fall)

ANOTHER record is likely to fall in Saturday's Grand Final when 10 sons of former VFL/AFL players take the field for the Western Bulldogs and the Sydney Swans.

The previous record of eight coincidentally occurred 55 years ago when Footscray played Hawthorn in the 1961 Grand Final, the Dogs’ most recent appearance in a Grand Final.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs are likely to field Tom Liberatore, Lachie Hunter, Liam Picken, Zaine Cordy, Josh Dunkley and Tory Dickson while the Swans will select Dan Hannebery, Josh Kennedy, Nick Smith and Tom Mitchell.

The fathers of those 10 played 1449 games for seven different clubs.

Replay of our rd 15 clash is on, amazing how many changes there will be to our team for this weeks game:

In - Dahlhaus, Dunkley, Roberts, T.Boyd, Hamling, Cordy, McLean
Out - Wallis, Webb, Jong, Minson, Redpath, Adams, Suckling

The mix to our team is quite different, really think another inside mid would be handy, Jong & Wallis are getting through a mountain of work in this game.

Looks like 4 changes to the Swans team too, notable ins are Tippett & Papley.

Aside from what we have shown over the past 4 weeks I think we are right in this. Unlike 08-10 we have a team that does not rely overly heavily on our top 6 players because our bottom 6 are damn good as well. Our game style also suits the Grand Final and matches up well against the Swans. We have relied on our skills, precise kicking and attacking flair in the past and this has always been broken down by the opposition at the pointy end, and while we have this aspect to our game, it's our elite hands, ball winning ability, hardness and good defensive structures that will win the match for us tomorrow.

The swans have been here before, but we've had 3 Grand Finals in a row these past three weeks and that has to count for heaps.

When we went into the first final against the Eagles I just remember being excited for guys like Libba and Macrae to make it back into the side and be able to test themselves on the big stage, for the sake of experience and for reward in what had been a trialling home and away season. Playing in a Grand Final was a world away. As much as I understand the aversion to looking at this opportunity as a free shot, it's truly come from nowhere and I'm just thankful to be able to attend tomorrow with the family. With guys like Liberatore, Macrae, Smith, Picken and Dahlhaus out there, I'm at ease knowing that they will bring everything they have. It's going to be a special day.

What a fantastic effort from both clubs in such a tight game. I thought the Swans were really tough and also really clean when they needed to be, as well as experienced enough to either stay in front when required to snaffle the quick and low ball, and also spot someone up between FF and CHF with lowered eyes.

During that time we were clearly scared of sacrificing possession for position, and this made us really questionable with our ball use between half back and wing. I think some higher and longer ball was required in the first half to either get it out or allow us to reset, and not doing so cost us a few goals in the second.

The second half was a blur. I thought we showed extreme character to continue on with our intensity and pace of mind and movement - this is where we eventually overwhelmed the Swans.

We were fairly well looked after by the umpires, as we have been for a couple of weeks now. But, we tackle with good technique, ferocity, repetition and hardness, and it causes teams to falter eventually. Conversely, teams don't tackle us well at all, and aren't able to cope with our quick use by hand well enough to pin us down or earn a free kick. The fact we get lower helps as well.

I thought Tom Boyd was the clear standout big man on the ground. How happy I am for him can't be put into words, and I desperately hope the GWS boys who were getting stuck into him in the 3rd quarter when Lobb goal'd are eating a massive spoonful of shite right now. Tom is a premiership hero, they're consigned to being preliminary final losers who found themselves in their predicament without exhibiting any grace. I hope the twitter users among us take some time to remind them of this.

Dale Morris was wonderful, as was Joel Hamling. Jack Macrae had some very questionable moments in the air at times in the second, but he really made me happy with how he snapped out of a bit of a lull and provided us with drive and a cool head.

I really did think JJ was probably the best provider of drive for our team, but his disposal let him down. In terms of gaining territory and releasing the valve, he was extremely important. Kennedy was a bit stiff to miss out on the Norm Smith, and if it was a couple of goals closer he'd have won it.

Lastly, Liam Picken has humbled me and I've never been happier to have clearly been proved wrong about a player. He is more dynamic than I ever gave him credit for, and I am extremely proud of him.

There's more about how awesome the day was, but that's for reflection and not for sharing right now.

Mate I've come back to Caulfield, flag flying out of the car window.

Showered, trackies on and hitting up a nice bottle of red and a steak. Mrs Jeemak is on the tear in Sydney for a hens do, but there's something that just makes me want to stay home and savour it in my own way and in my own company.

Every single grand final for the last twenty years I've given it a real nudge, this time's different and for me the best way I can respect it is chilling out and thinking about how good it was in a low key manner, talking to some key people over the phone and lapping it up with them.

What an amazing day, this morning as I type I'm still shedding the odd tear as I read and see video clips from the game.
How huge was Moz and here we were told it was something to do with orthotics the man truly has guts because he had some huge plays in the game.
I'll wait to hear if Stringer needs something repaired because he hasn't been himself for the last few weeks.
Apart from some heroics here and there that was a team effort and I'm so proud of this club.
I tried to buy the replica medallion from the store and it was out of stock an hour after the game, silly me hesitated while I looked through other stuff and when I went back to buy it, gone.

Just watched the replay how good was Biggys effort in the lead up to the final goal! There was so many contributors on the day but when have we been able to say the Bulldog talls were dominate? Boyd off the charts! Roughead had great hands again and Hamling oh Hamling!

And then there is one of my all time favourites Dale Morris!! He was close to BOG with a significant back injury, the best player of all time to have only one brownlow vote against his name.

And lastly Bevo. Mcginlay just summed him up perfectly,he is like a Jedi. From a person growing up on Star Wars I couldn't think of a better way to describe the man. How the hell he got this group through all the adversity to play their best footy at the business end. Bevo you are the definition of man love mate!

Biggys effort was prior to Picken goal with 7mins left. It was one of the plays of the year and it just encapsulated all things good about this group. While I'm on Picken, not Marcus or Billy I'm talking about Liam. The best Bulldog player in the finals series. How about that Liam!!!!

I haven't seen anything about the AFLCA Gary Ayres medal yet. Hoping to see that Picko wins it....but I suspect Josh Kennedy will end up in front - given he was already amongst the leader board before the GF - and likely polls anywhere from 6 to 10 votes.

But would be nice icing on the cake for one of ours to get the nod.

This was the leaderboard prior to the GF, so you would have to think it's out of Picken and Kennedy, but Kennedy will probably get it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bevo gives Picken the 5 votes though.

Thanks for the very kind posts here.

My father was on his way out mentally and physically, and seriously there are worse ways to go out than while watching your team in a grand final.

On a brighter note, I'm enjoying wandering around Sydney in my Doggies gear.

Fantastic win and finals series. I've followed the Dogs for 18 years and no other Dogs teams I've seen plays such a hard edged finals style. No chokers there. No weak links.

I'm afraid to say the grand final was a bitter sweet victory for me – my Swans supporting father was at home watching the game, and had a fatal heart attack. I was at a BBQ watching the game and found out after full time.

Watching the second half again right now, and I'm really impressed with the difference between our ability to defend the whole ground this finals series versus the pathetic effort of the 2015 series. Not a single behind the back free pass awarded for Sydney.

It's funny, when you defend well you have the impetus and space to attack well, and this is what we did at the G in each of the semi and the GF.

jeemak
11-10-2016, 01:30 AM
Another thing that stood out to me in the second half is the commentary expectation placed on the "great" Sydney players that were in the contest, apparently.

Sydney were a team incredibly lucky to finish on top, tied with another two teams this year. They were a disgrace in the 2014 grand final, probably the cherry on top in terms of really shit teams to contribute to a three-peat, all because they did Hawthorn in 2012.

The overrating of Sydney is something that's permeated the media for too long. The GWS vs WB preliminary final was by far the best game of the finals series and probably had the two best teams fighting it out.

Percentage isn't really a sign that you were the best team all year and the standout performer the media made them out to be.

I've just read on another site 35 pages of the most disgraceful crap I've ever read regarding the Umpiring from Grand Final. I still don't believe I sat through the whole lot. What a disgraceful group of people they are. We all know a couple of decisions went our way and the total free kick count was out a bit, but the way they have gone on and still are is laughable.

To read our win will always be tainted boils my blood! The highlight was a poster asking if the "has the Afl given the cup back to us yet" they seriously think it was rightfully theirs :D my god it was actually Hawthorns! We had the greatest 4 weeks in football it's time they acknowledge it!

How so? He tipped us to win by 24 pts and JJ for the Norm. He made a funny joke about watching us win being like watching your ex winning the Lotto.

During the PF he tweeted "GWS look a mile off the team from 2 weeks ago. Can't handle dogs pressure atm. If they don't turn it around quickly game over #55years"... He babysat the Stringer kids whilst Jake was playing in the PF. He did a pretty funny segment talking to the boys in the GF parade, where they didn't seem at all unhappy to see him (Libba and Dahl in particular).

I don't think many people get his sense of humour, that's all. Much like Libba commenting that he had to do a uni assignment on Saturday, so he'd just kick back with a couple of Cognacs.

And there is certainly a few that go the Swans way. Buddy hands in the back on Hamling. Buddy somehow wins a holding the ball when he had possession for most of the scrimmage, JJ goal overturned on less than concrete evidence.

But complaining about umpiring never got anyone, anywhere - ever.
