Had to do a double take and slow down last night here in Warragul. Somebody has programmed one of those portable orange electronic road safety signs to say "Come on the Doggies" in it's cycle of "Drive Carefully", etc.

There was a report on ABC news on Sunday night which featured some business in Seddon. Along the way my wife was interviewed (she is a Geelong fan, but talked about how 'her husband and her kids are doggies supporters so she is on board with us this week - and then they got my 3 year old daughter to say 'Go Doggies').

The wife was in the Seddon party shop today to get more balloons for the front of the house, and the lady who runs the shop said that yesterday was her biggest trading day in 12 years - just absolutely run off her feet with anything red, white and blue.

I saw that! What an awesome boon for businesses around the area.

Anyone got any recommendations of where to go for a drive through the west to take a look at lots of RW&B? I'd like to take the pup out to see some (hey, he might be 9 months old but it's got to be embedded in his psyche somewhere right?).

On Footy Classified, Caroline Wilson has a great point. Our success and story goes some way to making up for the mire of the Essendon saga. There is some lightness and joy in footy again, as shown by these pictures.

Can people get blue and red chalk and fill in the gaos between the white paint strips in the middle of the road up Gordon Street. It's not permanent nor damage so it's not illegal would be my understanding. Imagine the streets of Footscray red, white & blue down the centre of them!

Whingeing Malvern East neighbour complains over Western Bulldogs-themed fence (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/leader/inner-east/whinging-malvern-east-neighbour-complains-over-western-bulldogsthemed-fence/news-story/aebe06bd04888de2d9dfa7c8ce738339)

Rebecca Di Nuzzo, Stonnington Leader
March 31, 2017 12:00am

A LOYAL Western Bulldogs fan who painted their Malvern East fence red, white and blue after last year’s AFL grand final win has found themselves on the outer with at least one of their neighbours.

But a club legend has come to their defence, saying footy fans should be able to paint their fence whatever colours they wanted.
Stonnington councillor Sally Davis said she received a complaint from a homeowner who lives near the Beaver St property.

This led Cr Davis to ask council officers at a council meeting last month what policies, if any, regulated fence colours in the municipality.

Yarraville’s Railway Hotel also showed its true colours, with owner Jason Sneddon painting it red, white and blue. Picture:

Kylie ElseSpeaking to Leader after the meeting, she said there were a lot of heritage properties in that part of Malvern East and she personally believed the football-inspired fence colours were inappropriate.
“I think we should have some street regulations. Apparently there are no restrictions and I am going to follow it up with the (council’s) planning department,” Cr Davis said.

“I think when it’s a football team, it’s a bit over the top.”
But Western Bulldogs football great Doug Hawkins said proud football fans should be allowed to paint their fence any colour they want.

Jimmy Best was another homeowner who painted his fence ahead of last year’s Grand Final. Picture: Aaron Francis/The Australian

“It’s their property and if they want to paint it red, white and blue, so what? When I was a kid growing up in the western suburbs, every second house had their fence painted,” Hawkins said.

Australian Grand Prix Corporation chief executive Andrew Westacott also weighed in on the topic on 3AW this morning, saying no heritage building or statute of limitations put a smile on faces like the colourful fence did.
“I see a lot of people going past and smiling at it,” he said.

http://cdn.newsapi.com.au/image/v1/e977cf15462ba76c21ea6d06706c769c?width=650
Mad Doggies supporter Cam Duncan painted the fence of his Beach Rd home in Sandringham to show his support.

The passionate Bulldogs fan said his fence was painted in the Doggies’ colours as well after their drought-breaking premiership win, but admitted it had since returned to its original hue.

“I put a line in sand and painted it back mostly. My wife and her friends painted it, I just repainted it back,” he said.
The council’s chief executive Warren Roberts said the Beaver St home was impacted by a heritage overlay but a planning permit was not required by the resident to paint their fence.

“Compliance penalties are determined on the specific details of each contravention. In this instance no contravention has occurred,” he said.
Mr Roberts also said there were no council policies or planning provisions pertaining to permissible fence colours across the municipality.

The owner of the Bulldogs-themed fence did not respond by deadline to the Leader’s request for comment and the neighbour who made the complaint did not wish to comment.

Meanwhile, fence disputes continue to be the top reason for neighbourhood disputes, new data has revealed.

Madness!

It is their property so they can paint their fence whatever colours they like and as Bulldogs supporters waiting for 55-60 odd years they should be able to have the choice to paint their fence red, white and blue whichever suburb they are in as we have passionate Doggies supporters in very suburb (west, north, east, south) of our city.

Music and the Bulldogs: The Emily Ulman story
Emily Ulman's love of the Western Bulldogs is immediately clear to those fortunate enough to meet her in person.

Emily Ulman's love of the Western Bulldogs is immediately clear to those fortunate enough to meet her in person.

The talented musician and festival director is rarely seen without her Bulldogs cap, even when on stage.

According to Ulman, any remaining doubt would be removed with a quick chat to her mum or any of her three sisters. "They know that when there's a game on, I'm to be left alone. No chats, no texts, no WhatsApp messages. When the Dogs are playing, they are my sole focus."

In normal times, Emily can be found at almost every Western Bulldogs match, be that a men's or women's game, and at most VFL games, too, cheering on the 'Scray.

Born and bred in Melbourne, Ulman is somewhat of an unlikely Bulldogs' fan. "Mum's a Carlton fan and Dad barracks for Collingwood. As I kid, I didn't want to let either of them down, so I chose another team."

How did she settle on Footscray? "I think it was the colours. And dogs — who doesn't love dogs?!"

The last couple of years have not been easy for Emily, both in football and work terms. She has desperately missed being able to see the Dogs on a regular basis, but her daily world has also been turned upside down.

"It's just so long since I played a gig", is a phrase Ulman and many musicians have uttered since COVID changed our world early last year. For a music festival director, the pandemic has cut deeper still.

But Emily Ulman is not one to take a setback lying down. The need and want to play and hear music has not abated because of COVID. If anything, the opposite has been true. Recognising this, Ulman created Isol-Aid, an online music festival and gathering space that has allowed artists to play short sets to an online audience who are encouraged to donate in lieu of ticket and drink prices they would have paid at an in-person gig.

Isol-Aid has featured many renowned Aussie artists such as Courtney Barnett, Paul Dempsey Sarah Blasko, John Butler and Missy Higgins to name a few.

In recent years, Ulman has also combined her two great loves, music and footy, by staging an annual "For the Jumper" concert on Grand Final Eve. "We get artists who support each team to play their club song and also another track that describes their season."

The line-up plays in reverse ladder order, with the order of the final two artists — representing the two Grand Final teams — decided by a toss of the coin. According to Ulman, the coin has correctly picked the winning team every year but one since the first "For the Jumper" show in 2014.

Sadly, the pandemic has meant there will be no "Fore the Jumper" concert this year but, with her mighty Bulldogs into the Grand Final, Emily Ulman is as enthusiastic as ever about footy.

"I'm actually loving the two-week lead-in", she says, "because it gives fans a longer chance to soak up the feeling of making the Grand Final before the nerves start creeping in."

Ulman is sad she won't be able to cheer the Dogs in person this year, but she was lucky enough to have been at the MCG for the 2016 premiership win. She celebrated that flag long and hard. "Even now, I still get friends coming up to me describing events of the following days of which I have no recollection!"

If the Bulldogs prevail against the Demons next Saturday week, Emily's celebration options will be more limited than they were in 2016, but she will definitely find a way to celebrate long and hard again.

My wife and I have been wearing our doggie gear everywhere we go for the last 2 weeks. Today Mrs BFL was at the local Foodstore shop and a big bloke came up to her and shook his head at the cap and said nah Melbourne will win. He said his father played and coached Melbourne. Name was Norm Smith. This guy said his name was Bruce Smith and he played for Richmond. His half brother was Peter who played for Melbourne. When I did a bit of research yes Bruce and Peter existed but nowhere does it say Bruce was the son of Norm. "Bruce" said his mother was still alive at 103 yo and lived in Aspendale Vic. Maybe a secret son of Norm? Ha ha not sure.

Since the finals began, i have been taking my dog for a walk around Yarraville-Seddon. Before our first game vs Ess and the week following, there were only a few houses dressed up in RWB. This increased ever so slightly after the Brisbane game and the lead up to the game vs Port. I was thinking at the time how different it was to 2016 when there was so much more visible RWB support in the area and that this Covid lockdown seemed to have taken the wind (and colour) out of Doggies supporters.

However - once we made the GF a fortnight ago, things started to take on a 2016 vibe. Now a lot of businesses in Anderson Street (Yville)/Victoria St (Seddon) are displaying our colours (Eastie - unfortunately with lockdown, the Railway Hotel is closed, so remains a drab white/grey exterior).

Each day last week and this week, I've noticed more households in the local area turning out the RWB 'carpet' (including my own...).

It now feels like we are in a Grand Final (again) after all!
