No, this year the AFL counted our membership as 39,459 and the club ended up counting it as 40,081.

Sounds about right. Success is one thing but that extra $200-$600 a year is a massive jump in peoples budget. A 7k increase to high 40s would be great. 50k is certainly achieveable though. Here's hoping.

It's also worth pointing out that about 2000 people who wouldn't normally sign up as members will get on board for the women's team. They will buy memberships solely for the purpose of attending the women's matches.

Does it cost money to go to the women's game if not a member ?

55000.....on subject of membership, I have been a Bulldog for life with social club entitlements for a number of years now, our membership is usually automatically rolled over for the following year around December, Can anyone tell me if that is still the case for 2017?

Anything above a 10% increase is an outstanding jump. But just as a 'case study'.

Hawthorn had 41,436 members in 2008 - similar to us now.

2009 - jumped to 52,496

Then to follow;

2010- 53,978
2011- 56,353
2012- 60,841
2013- 63,353
2014- 68,650
2015- 72,924
2016- 75,352

Obviously they have had incredible sustained success. And the 2008 premiership probably unearthed/unlocked a great deal of their dormant supporter base who had gone missing after the 80s and '91 flags - but it still shows the possibilities of what might happen in the rapidly growing west, should we have sustained success.

At the risk of being controversial - I was pretty proud that we were the Western Bulldogs - during the finals and particularly Grand Final week.

To be living in Seddon and seeing the incredible way that the area embraced the red, white and blue - and witnessing similar scenes in Footscray, Yarraville, Altona, Newport, Sunshine - and I'm sure all over the west in areas like Werribee, Hoppers, Wyndam, Point Cook. Team of the mighty west, indeed.

Hawks also include Tassie members in those figures - I think about 15,000. We will probably have a special Ballarat membership which will also boost the numbers.

Peter Gordon quoted today that we have had to hire extra staff in the membership department to cope with ongoing demand.

Another case study is Geelong whose membership jumped from 30,169 to 36,850 (22%) after winning their first premiership for 43 years in 2007.

On the way up for the PF, happened to be sitting next to a woman who works in the marketing department. She told me that then. And they still struggled to cope with the demand!
