When I first opened this thread I thought (for a second) that crowd was for our first preseason session. Wow, we really are growing our fanbase rapidly I thought :)

Maybe the 17th will draw a huge crowd.

Nice shot of the John Gent Stand. I viewed our final training session before the Grand Final from there. Was great seeing the Whitten Stand rocking that day - sat up in the Whitten Stand for a bit at the family day the day after the Grand Final.

I look forward to reading some in depth training reports and especially hear on how Travis Cloke is tracking along with all our new recruits. Loved some of the reports from this season from training and the VFL games.

BRIDGET DAVIES, Herald Sun December 17, 2016 1:02pm

ALL Western Bulldogs fans want for Christmas is another premiership.

More than 1500 festive fans gathered to see the players train at Whitten Oval for one last time before Christmas.

Instead of “Sons of the West”, Christmas carols rang over the PA system as players did a light session before a sea of red, white and blue.

Fans are hoping the team can deliver them the gift of another premiership in 2017.

Pat Hodgson, 89, from Seddon, has been coming to training with her daughter Jenny, every week for the last 38 years.

“Oh my lord we couldn’t believe we won this year, still can’t believe it,” Mrs Hodgson said.

She’s watched the Grand Final a couple of times since and has faith her beloved Bulldogs can go back to back.

“It would be beautiful wouldn’t it? I think we can do it,” she said.

Players spent plenty of time with appreciative fans, signing autographs and taking selfies.

Premiership star Matthew Boyd said he noticed a few more people here this year than last.

“I suppose that will happen with all the things we do throughout the year, we’ve got great support,” Boyd said.

He said all the players were looking forward to Christmas and the challenge beyond.

“I feel ready to go again, we’re all pretty excited about reloading for next year. All I want for Christmas is a 2017 premiership,” he laughed.

Boyd’s player sponsor Eden Stafford brought his 2-year-old son Isaac along to see the players and thank them for a great year.

“I had no choice about going for the Bulldogs growing up and neither did he,” Mr Stafford said of his little boy.

“I think this year was about the 3rd time I’ve ever seen my Dad cry in my life.”

“I’m sure I wasn’t the only one,” Eden’s father Martin said.

The family took young Isaac to his first Bulldogs game this year — what will be the first of many.

“We’ve taught him to say, ‘Go Bulldogs’,” Mr Stafford said.

The Bulldogs will now embark on a training camp on the Surf Coast before breaking for Christmas, returning to preseason in early January.

In the mean time, CEO Gary Kent said if fans are looking for a last minute Christmas gift — the Bulldogs shop is the place to go.

“They haven’t stopped in the shop, we’re selling a lot of premiership footballs,” Mr Kent said.

“If you know someone who’s a Bulldogs supporter it’s a really easy thing to buy for Christmas.”

Mr Kent said the entire club was grateful for the overwhelming fan response — and they were looking forward to delivering for them again in 2017.

“We know it’s a tough competition and next year instead of doing the hunting we’re going to be the hunted,” he said.

“But we’re very happy to take on that challenge.”

Was very impressed with Biggsy. As the boys where moving along the fence to sign stuff/photos etc. (They really hadn't been going very long). Someone would tap them one by one on the shoulder, take their texta and say something like "Your needed inside". And off they would go.
Biggs said "No, I'm going to keep signing until I reach the end, they have all come for this and have been waiting".

Nice story there :).

If I wasn't mistaken, Stringer was a bit in front of Biggsy and .... he jumped the fence just to surprise the kid in the wheel-chair and signed the back jumper and other stuffs. That would made the kid day.

Terrific stuff choconmientay. Thought Jack looked in particularly good nick, very lean. For a young 18 year old, Lewis Young has a terrific frame (which doesn't mean that much I know, but it's a good start).

Had the binoculars at yesterday's training and I didn't notice the following players on the oval at any time - Suckling, Wally, Libba, Clay Smith, Dickson. They may have been inside the Mission Elite Training Centre (someone previously mentioned having seen Libba in there)

Doing minor work (e.g. laps) and generally not completing in the main drills were: Roughy, Bonti, Redders, Collins, Adams, Prudden, Murphy, Tom Boyd

Easton Wood was 50/50 - started with the main group, then moved to the rehab group.

As you can see from Choco's pics, the new boys will need to put some weight on - they are noticeably smaller in physique when standing beside established players (even Declan Hamilton now looks closer to an AFL sized player in comparison!)

I focussed on that group of players that will be pushing for senior selection this year.

Honeychurch, Webb, Dale all looked in good nick as did Jongy - all ready to jump in if anyone is still underdone come season opener.

Williams, Rorke Smith and Lynch did a lot of hard running and I thought Williams looked noticeably bigger (has a tattoo on one of his calves this year).

I think Hamilton comes at the end of the long queue above.

Going to be hard to overlook Crameri and Cloke with their bigger bodies for best 22, so the pressure will be on other the incumbent big men from this year's finals series.

Thanks Guys for the nice comments about the photos.

Cloke field kicking was pretty good. JJ, Dahl, Macrae, Jong, Webb skills are sharp for the session.
I caught Bob in the car park before he left and has him signed my Premiership cap :). That will be the sole signature on it. (Maybe also considering Bevo's and Wood's if I happen to get them)

Cloke and Crameri are going to cause a lot of pain to the opposition either directly or indirectly through letting blokes like Stringer and Boyd have lesser backman on them.
Hope Cloke is working well with Stringer at training .. Is their any sign at training the forwards are practicing stuff together ?

Might be just a case of pins or rod being removed, although at his age a rod would normally stay in.

I was never a fan when we were a bottom team of having closed sessions. No one was trying to copy us, and we needed as much fan enthusiasm as we could get, but realistically there would be squads of other teams' spies trying to look at what we're working on now. A dud coach like Buckley practically copies exactly what other teams have been doing previously. So it's a necessary evil that we have to accept comes with success.

Training on Tuesday and Thursday nights consisting of Indian file track work and then kick to kick (no waxing) for an hour while Bucks stands in the middle of the ground with a group of 60 year old ex players. End to end footy with a large number of class mates where a couple of friends would share the spoils when they had possession of the footy. If you were small you would try and wax with a taller mate who if he couldn't mark it might knock it your way. If you were tall try and wax with a mate who would dive on the ball if it hit the ground. If you were a gun just get your own footy.

In games, follow the best team mate around and hope to get a few handballs when he was getting tackled.

Years ago a lot of players waxed with the Krakouer brothers being great at it. Once one of them had the ball they automatically looked for the other brother.

Yep. And you shared possies. Even if you worked really hard to get the ball if it was his turn to kick it down the other end then you had to give him the easy handball. If you didn't think he was pulling his weight in the partnership it might be a hospital handball with twenty kids waiting to jump on it.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten that trick. If you defended the goals you had less competition than if you wanted to have shots. It was a bit rougher down the defensive end too. We had a rule where you could have a shot of the ball hit the deck so it was proper hard hitting defending.

I think I'm starting to work out what's wrong with my shoulders and knees these days. But I wouldn't change a thing, footy and cricket were our life when we were teenagers.

And a lot of soccer at school. We had gun soccer teams because we had heaps of European and South American kids when most schools didn't. In my year 12 alone we had four boys who went OS and played professional soccer. Our footy routinely got thrashed but our soccer teams bought back Divisional and State championionships so they got a little more attention.

Kids in my year level from year 10 onwards were going OS and interstate on tours and missing school. The lunchtime games could get a bit technical and we learned how to mark our man.

A couple of then would have had EU passports as well I think. It makes it a lot easier to play in Europe or something. Apparantly they were like gold for professional footballers.

I think half the Serbian soccer team grew up in the western suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney at one stage. Might have been one of the other Baltic states.

Good old Footscray JUST .. Think they finally transformed into Melbourne Knights. Coached juniors against them , funnily enough it was harder to get a game at green gully. At age 9 you had to try out to get a go at green gully where Melbourne Knights just kept adding junior sides depending on numbers.

Nah, Footscray JUST were Serbian and Melbourne Knights are the old Melbourne Croatia - Formed in Footscray, but based in Essendon and Geelong at different stages. The two were huge rivals. Bit of rivalry between the Serbs and Croats come 1990 or thereabouts, but in reality, it simmered in Melbourne for many years prior.

JUST were always more powerful than Melb Croatia, but, as things tend to go, the Balkans war had a galvanising effect on Croatia, but the exact opposite effect on JUST. Melb Croatia went on to become multiple national champs, whilst JUST folded. Melb Croatia moving to the outer suburbs (North Sunshine) and JUST stayed in the inner suburbs (just over the Maribyrnong from Footscray in West Melbourne where container yards and transport depots now are.)

As a footnote, as a kid, the Footscray Bulldogs used to wear Eastcoast Jeans sponsors logos, so when I saw Footscray JUST playing in red white & blue on SBS, I used to think it had something to do with a Just Jeans sponsorship... Theres a chance I wasn't the brightest kid..

The way the club is embracing the women's team is fantastic. The girls will be very excited to be training with the guys.

It was fantastic. I was close to groups run by Gia and Ash Hansen, and they were taking women aside to talk them through kicking technique, or running patterns, or all sorts of things. The improvement that will be seen in women's AFL with this level of support and coaching will be phenomenal. Not to mention their skills are already extremely solid, and most of them have already been playing for a while.
The best part was that they all joined in the signing and photos on the fence at the end, which was noticeably a thrill for both them and a number of supporters (especially younger girls). Very proud to be a Bulldog.

As for the men training, the only person I didn't sight was Tory Dickson, but I was struggling with so many people out there.

There was a large number of players who didn't do full training, including Libba, Stringer, Suckling, Matt Boyd, JJ, Morris, Cloke, both Smiths and more.

Training itself was pretty routine, and hard to read anything into it.

Roberts did an extra 10 minutes or so of high intensity running at the end.

Redpath said he is aiming to be back for round 10. He was saying that usually they aim for a 9-10 month return, but they're being slightly more cautious with him and doing 11 months because of his history.

Wallis looked great, not really training but looks in ripping shape. He and Dahlhaus are having a tan off. Confirmed that round 1 is the aim, but didn't say it with a heap of confidence!

One of the young guys was in a moon boot, not sure who.

And my favourite thing were a couple of tatts - JJ "it was all a dream" (not grand final related, but very apt) and Libba "when the going gets weird, the weird get going". Classic Libba.

We must not have been far away from each other JD, I was listening intently when Gia was talking to the girls. It was wonderful to see both squads mixed up in the drills.

Oh, and holding the cup was even better than I imagined.

Just re Caleb Daniel and him being in the rehab group. While I was watching training (from 3.30 onwards), he was completing drills with the main group. Also noticed Fletcher Roberts doing some run thrus at the end. He was training with everyone else beforehand, so not sure why he stayed out completing extra work.

I was was close to one of the training drills and noted how the drill was modified enough to allow both men and women to get the maximum benefit. I wouldn't have said any drill was particularly stressful however, no doubt due to the extreme heat.

I had wanted to get pic with our Cup, but couldn't find where one had to go - I checked the Museum to make sure it wasn't there. Can anyone enlighten me on where I should have gone? (Next time.....)

Some of the older players will need to be managed plus we have some players that will have later starts to the season. I still feel that if our younger guys are in form and impressing on the training track then there will be some opportunities.

Depth in the playing list tends to keep everyone focused the hard part will be keeping players if they feel as though their form warrants senior selection and they aren't getting the opportunities.

The Western Bulldogs will host an open training session on Sunday 29 January 2017 on the Sunshine Coast, giving you the opportunity to meet the reigning 2016 AFL Premiers in your home state and watch them in action during their pre-season training camp.

The training session will be held at the Maroochydore Sports Complex (Fisherman's Road, Maroochydore, QLD) commencing at 9.30am.

The Bulldogs Shop team will also be making the trip north, with a great selection of the 2017 Western Bulldogs official merchandise range available on site purchase.

The Club would once again like to thank you for your ongoing support, and look forward to seeing you Sunday week on the Sunshine Coast.

Saw Higgins on Monday outside of Arden St.

He is listed at 186cm, would not buy real estate off the guy who measured him. I'm only 6 2 and I was on the road, he was on the footpath and I was still taller than him. Footballers are sometimes intimidating in terms of size and muscle definition - Higgins definitely wasn't.

He was one of our best in a final against Geelong a few years back (08?).
If he's polish, not substance, he's very good. If required to do too much heavy lifting he can go missing.

Got my photo with the cup within 5 mins (only around 40 supporters present) but the group training included only those players from JLT1, so I was't able to make any visible assessment of Bonti, Wood, Dixon and others who didn't play.

The Eureka surface looked in good nick and it was good to see the construction of the new grandstands going ahead.

I went on Saturday and ran a keen eye over proceedings on the field.

Those present, but not involved due to injury were Redders, Wally, Green and Tweedie. No sign of Roughy, Prudden or Dicko.

The scratch match was for 3 'quarters' of about 20 mins or so and some VFL players were used to assist with team numbers (including Jayden Foster).

Bont played for 2 'quarters' and was one of his teams better performers.

Some general observations (my thoughts only):
1. draftees English, Lipinsky, Young and Mull-McHugh all played and their comparable performance would have also been in the same order (English was good around the ground but beaten easily by Campbell before he went off with what looked like an ankle (was in ice at end of game))
2. Daniel, Dahlhaus, Macrae, Libba, Picks, Hunter and Dunks all got plenty of ball while Jong got more involved in the game than he did vs Melb in previous week.
3. of the 3rd year players yet to establish themselves, Webb was by far the hardest worker (bottom of packs etc), while Bailey Dale had some nice touches as did my whipping boy Hamilton in the last half when he came on. Roarke Smith worked hard off the backline and i liked Cordy's game playing mainly in the back half.
4. of the 2nd year players yet to establish themselves, Bailey Williams looked composed and Lynch had a good game as well (no doubt plating in JLT1 gave his confidence a boost). Kieran Collins had a quiet game, but I suspect he may have been nursed thru game (had his shoulder strapped). Marcus Adams seemed to appreciate this further hit out.
5. Boyd more effective in ruck duels than around the ground marking and Stringer was everywhere (back, starting mid, fwd). Still to hit any form similar to 2015. Cloke and Crameri had solid games - I think Cloke is going to be good for us - he works up and down the ground and is a good field kick.
6. Moz, Boyd, Wood, Biggs and Murphy played their HB roles with reliable ease with Murph getting a much better run this week.
7. JJ showed why he is the reigning Norm Smith medallist - BOG in my opinion
8. McLean, Clay Smith and Honeychurch didn't hurt their reputations - I think they would all be vying with Dickson for the two small HF roles for round 1
9. Suckling played ok - showed no signs of any injury
10. Liked Fletch's game - he was being used a number of times as the outlet kick from the full back line and took some good defensive contested marks

Anyone know where Dickson is at? I was surprised he wasn't at the ground least of all playing.

Another report from the day was a lot more bullish on English

English affected nearly every tap during ruck contests against BTC. His ruck duels against Boyd were much harder as Boyd used his weight really well against him, putting him off balance. Timmy looks like he's filled out a little, or at least he has toned up, looked as though he has some form of muscle on his frame now. One play from a centre bounce he tapped it to his advantage, collected and cleared the ball in a freakishly natural way. Another play on the wing, he contested a mark and it spilled behind him, he spun and collected below his knees with one hand and launched it into the forward fifty off 2 steps. One last play that I just wowed at was after an uncontested mark on the defensive 50 arc. He took a moment surveying the ground before launching a huge kick to the opposite wing hitting Williams who had lost his defender, square on the chest. He seriously looks like something special. I just hope we manage his weight really well and get a great balance between his natural agility while developing his core strength.
