OK trendetters, here it is. The official. often copied but never bettered "who to root for" thread. T.M. pat. pending.
For those who came in late, this will guide you on who to barrack for each week, for the greater good of our beloved dogs.
Please be aware, there are weeks where you may have to barrack for horrible teams such as the Crows....or Collingwood!
And also, i'm completely unaccountable and as the season pans out previously you may have had a root that you thought was a good idea at the time, but you are now ashamed of and hope no one noticed.
As i always so root early, root often and root again

Think I prefer Melbourne as I would prefer Swans totally removed from finals contention.
Port v Richmond either way.
Blues over Crows is a no brainer, even if extremely unlikely.
Giants over Cats to give the Cats some chance of dropping out of at least top 4 and maybe the 8.
Freo over Saints I am with.
Brisbane over Essendon would be heroic but can't see it at Etihad.
Suns over Kangas is possibly irrelevant but our best result would be Kangas, except for always preferring them to lose.
Hawthorn v Collingwood is either way but Hawthorn need the lesson of irrelevance, while Collingwood are good to provide with unfulfilled hope.

I'm inclined to agree about Melbourne. We're more likely to overtake Sydney than Melbourne.
I dare say we'll be rooting constantly for the Kangaroos' opponents for the Hrovat compo.
Agree about the others.

Big weekend coming up with 4 games between top 9 teams. Of those matches the key results for us are Port to beat Melbourne and GWS to beat Richmond, which will keep both Richmond and Melbourne right back with the chasing pack. Wishful thinking but would love Norf to do us a favour and beat the Dopers - not holding my breath. Collingwood to beat West Coke in Melbourne would be very handy a well. Syd v St Kilda is kind of handy and kind of crap either way.
And of course us to beat GC in Cairns.

We need a lot of help over the next 6 weeks. Even with 5 wins from our last 6 we could still miss out due to our poor %. We really need Essendon and West Coast to lose. I'll say the same about the saints given i think Sydney, Richmond and Melbourne will make it.

How would Melbourne winning help us in the slightest? Port are a game and massive percentage ahead of Melbourne, who are a game and percentage ahead of us - the Demons are one of the teams we'll more than likely have to finish ahead of just to have any chance of making the top 8.
Any talk about top 4 is fanciful IMO. For mine, I want to see GWS, Port, Geelong and Adelaide win all their games against the current 5-10 teams so that as many spots as possible in the bottom half of the top 8 open up.

That was done with top 4 in mind. Port are 4th and a game below 3rd, and therefore are the side most vulnerable to dropping out. They lose to Melbourne this week, Adelaide and us and they finish on 13 wins, we win our remaining 6 games and we get to 14 wins

If you look at it in terms of who we wanted to lose to put them in danger of missing the 8, sure, but seeing Port & GWS get rolled gives me hope we can beat them
St Kilda's big loss puts them behind us and brings us up to 10th. Beat Essendon next week and we're 9th, beat them by 8 goals more than West Coast beat Brisbane by and we're 8th
Not sure whether to root for Brisbane to win, as we play them the week after. Maybe a big effort in Perth will take it out of them

The good part of this round was StKilda and WCE losing. They both have very hard roads to the finals now (on the ladder predictor I have them each finishing on 11 wins), effectively leaving 9 teams in with a healthy shot for the final.sMakes next weeks Essendon match absolutely huge. The winner is really in the box seat to sneak a finals spot.

Is "When we win it will make storming in our inevitable finals spot a lot simpler" what you meant to say? :D we won't be sneaking into anything!
This one will seem weird - but we are rooting for the Saints against Port this week.
I've been looking through our potential windows for a finals berth - of which there are very few - but Port is an opening for us.
Whereas St.Kilda's run home from here is so difficult that even if they beat Port - they still should miss finals.
St.Kilda could actually beat Port AND West Coast - and likely still miss the finals - so are definitely our ally the next two weeks.

Tried to do a realistic ladder predictor, with a few variations on our results
If we win our remaining games, I have us finishing 6th and hosting Port in week 1 of finals, after having just beaten them in round 22, then playing the loser of Geelong v GWS away, the winner of Adelaide v Melbourne away and the winner of Geelong v GWS in the GF, assuming they win their home prelim
If we lose to Port but win the rest, we finish 8th and play Melbourne away, the loser of Adelaide v GWS away, the winner of Geelong v Port away and the winner of Adelaide v GWS in the GF, assuming they win their home prelim
If we lose to GWS, or Hawthorn, or Brisbane but win the rest, we finish 8th and play Richmond away, the loser of Adelaide v Melbourne away, the winner of Geelong v GWS away and the winner of Adelaide v Melbourne in the GF, assuming they win their home prelim
If we lose to Essendon but win the rest, or if we lose more than 1 game regardless of the opposition, we finish 9th or lower. We get in on 13 wins with one more loss, unless that loss is against Essendon this week
Honestly, I could see us winning our remaining games, but an interstate finals win might be too much for us this year. Our best chance could be losing to GWS/Hawthorn/Brisbane and playing Richmond, Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide in the finals, all in Victoria

The reality is that making the 8 will be an achievement in itself.
The side we played against the Suns was missing 8 from our Premiership team - 1 gone to Freo, 3 out injured and 4 omitted due to form.
We have been cruelled by injury again this year, had a number of players undergo surgery during the off season and a number unable to make it to the barrier for round 1.
Then we lose Crameri for the year and Cloke, who we had big hopes for, a few games in.
It has been a tough year - au unchanged line up has been a rarity. We've also had three players, Bob, Wally and BJR coming back from major, major surgery.
It's been a really challenging year. Throw in a rule change that has affected us more than any other team, then it's not surprising to find us with our backs to the wall.

Oddly, and unhelpfully - as if the stakes weren't high enough vs the dopers this week - every team above us is drawn against teams below us this round, ie: even in a season of anything goes, you'd suggest they're all 'on paper' wins.
If we can't engineer a win on Sunday and nature takes its course it's going to be very, very tough from here.

If we could ask the football gods to take care of us in one round from here on in, this would be the round to ask for. As you say, every team from 1-9 is playing a team from 10-18. I am too tired to bother to work out the odds of this actually occurring, but I would say it wouldn't roll around very often.
For the record it is:
Collingwood (13th) versus Adelaide (1st)
Carlton (16th) versus Geelong (2nd)
GWS (3rd) versus Freo (14th)
GC (15th) versus Richmond (4th)
Port (5th) versus Saints (11th)
Hawks (12th) versus Sydney (6th)
North (17th) versus Melbourne (7th)
WB (10th) versus Essendon (8th)
The great thing is 7 out of 9 of the lower ranked teams are at home and the only teams with long odds would probably be Freo and Brisbane (who have both shown that their best is enough nuisance value to stay in the game and if they are able to hang around they grow in confidence and are very dangerous). Worth also noting that WC and GWS have both also hit a very flat spot, are under extreme pressure in the media, and are vulnerable.
North might be 17th but they are playing down in Tassie (where they destroyed the Crows) and even if they play like they did last week they are a very good chance of knocking off the very flakey Demons.
Hawks and Collingwood are coming off a good win and Hawthorn, in particular, would be extremely confident going into the Swans game at home (especially after knocking them off earlier in the year).
GC get a few key players back and are Richmond's bogey side. Additionally, if history has taught us nothing else it is that Richmond do love to struggle the week after having a great win.
Port v Saints game is a bit of a win-win really. If Port win it almost ends the Saints season, if Port lose they fall back to the teams scrapping for a position in the 8 and consequently our matchup with them probably means we will be controlling our own destiny.
If we can do our part by beating Essendon, we could be one win and 6% or so out of the top 4. How's that for glass half full?

While the 1st option of a GWS win allows us to close the gap on Melbourne, the other option is GWS to lose all remaining games and miss the 8 themselves.

Geelong looking pitiful is not good for us. Hopefully Adelaide beat Sydney in round 22 so we still pass them if we win out, but another Sydney loss would have allowed us to drop a game and still go past them. We need Geelong to beat GWS in R22 as well, hopefully they're a different side with Danger back

Geelong may also be under pressure. They could easily lose to Richmond next week with potential outs in Selwood and Duncan. They also have a poor record against Collingwood.
It is plausible for round 23 to be a must win for both Geelong and GWS just to make the 8.

I want the current top 4 to keep on winning (except against us of course). Adelaide winning today for example will keep Port mired in the 5-8 pack, and it then puts our destiny in our own hands playing Port in a couple of weeks. The more teams as possible at the 10-11 win mark, the more spots in the bottom half of the 8 open up.

Geelong would only need to lose 2 of the 3 for us to go past them winning all 3 of our games
If Adelaide beat Essendon and St Kilda beat Melbourne next week, we'll make the 8 even if we drop a game (assuming St Kilda don't catch our percentage or they drop a game)

Top 2 is out of reach now. Most we can get is 56 points. Adelaide already have 58. GWS & Richmond have 52 and Geelong has 50. Geelong play both GWS & Richmond, and would need to win both to stop GWS & Richmond getting to 56 but would then be on 58 themselves
If we win our remaining 3 games, the highest we can finish is 3rd, and the lowest we can finish is 6th. We are currently 7th and play Port who we would go past if we beat them
To pass Sydney we need them to lose one of Freo (H), Adel (A), Carl (H) so their R22 game against Adelaide is key
To pass Geelong we need them to lose two of Rich (H), Coll (A), GWS (H), their R21 and R23 games are key
To pass Richmond we need them to lose all of Geel (A), Freo (A), StK (A)
To pass GWS we need them to lose all of WB (A), WCE (H), Geel (A)

If we win 2 of our remaining games we get to 52 points. Adelaide, GWS & Richmond already have 52 so the highest we could finish is 4th. To pass Melbourne we need them to lose one of StK (H), BL (H), Coll (A), R21 v StK is key
To pass West Coast we need them to lose one of Carl (H), GWS (A), Adel (H), R22 v GWS is key
To pass Essendon we need them to lose one of Adel (H), GC (A), Freo (H), R21 v Adel is key

Yep, big incentive to win the rest of our games, as we either get top 4 or a home final. Guaranteed to finish higher this year with 14 wins than we did last year with 15 wins. For top 4, we need Adelaide to beat Sydney, and either Richmond & GWS to beat Geelong, or West Coast & Geelong to beat GWS
If Adelaide beat Sydney, Richmond beat Geelong and West Coast beat GWS, we're in regardless of the result of the Geelong v GWS game in round 23, and those two sides are playing for top 4. If either Richmond beat Geelong or West Coast beat GWS but not both, that game will decide whether we make top 4 or not

Need St Kilda to have a narrow win against Melbourne to stay in the 8 at the end of the round. More than that and they will pass us on percentage. Better for us if they beat Melbourne, as not only are we a chance to hold them off on percentage, but they have to beat Richmond in R23

Reckon we will make top 8 if we win both games. West Coke have 2 tough games (GWS away and Adelaide home), and St Kilda has Richmond in R23. Demons have a tough match against the Pies in R23 which they could easily drop. We have Essendon covered if we win both. Even Port if they lose tomorrow and we knock them off next week.
We'd be incredibly stiff to miss the top 8 with 13-9 - I reckon 12-10 and a good % will be enough to make it.

Yep, the Essendon game last night was the key one, whether they could get over Adelaide at home. Adelaide held up their end of the bargain, just need West Coast to lose one of their next two to join Essendon and the loser of St Kilda/Melbourne as the 3 top 11 teams that don't get to 13 wins

Any year before now trying to finish 7th or 8th and play in the elimination final would have been seen as fighting for the consolation prize of your season going a week or maybe two weeks longer. Now teams see themselves as a real chance to win the flag no matter where they finish inside the eight.

I love having to rely on other mobs.
I really don't mind seeing st Kilda getting their pants pulled down. If it costs us our spot in the eight then that's our look out for playing like idiots and not winning enough games.

Port win today
So the hope now is for
1. Us beat the Power in Ballarat
2. The Giants to beat the Eagles
3. And Suns to win over Dons and Lions to win over the Demons in upsets both not likely
If the Giants beat the Eagles will be 8th going into the final round so number 1 and 2 we need to happen.

The only likely scenario as far as I'm concerned is us winning both games. Pretty confident we get in if we do that. If that doesn't happen it's goodnight 2017. If it's the latter, who do you root for to win the flag? I honestly don't like any of them and think they all would make weak premiers.

Poor round
WB v GWS - Nope
Syd v Fre - Nope
Geel v Rich - Nope
Bris v GC
Ess v Adel - Yes
WCE v Carl - Nope
Melb v StK - Nope
Haw v NM
Port v Coll - Nope
Round 22
Adel v Syd
WB v Port
Coll v Geel
GWS v WCE
GC v Ess
Carl v Haw
Melb v BL
StK v NM
Fre v Rich
Round 23
Haw v WB
Coll v Melb
BL v NM
Syd v Carl
Geel v GWS
Port v GC
Ess v Fre
Rich v StK
WCE v Adel
If we win both games, we need one of Melbourne to lose 1, West Coast to lose 1, Sydney to lose 2 and Port to lose 2 (one of which would be a loss to us) to make the 8. Any one of GWS v WCE, WCE v Adel or Coll v Melb would get us in
If we win one game, we need three of Melbourne to lose 2, West Coast to lose 2, Essendon to lose 1 and St Kilda to either lose 1 or not make up ~39 points of percentage to make the 8. All of GC v Ess, Rich v StK, WCE v GWS and Adel v WCE would get us in

Would be great to win back to back VFL flags. A great achievement if we do it being in the competition for a short time. May go to a VFL final if it's hosted at the Whitten Oval and possibly North Port if we make the prelim and will probably go to the VFL GF at Etihad if we make it of course :)

For finals, the equation is simple. We only need 3 things to happen:
Dogs beat Port
Dogs beat Hawks
GWS beats WC, or Adel beats WC (at Domain and Adel might already have top spot sewn up)
Other preferable results as follows:
Syd beats Adel - makes sure Adel are at full rat power in R23 against WC. Also gives Syd a top 4 chance and Rich to drop to 5th.
St K beats Rich - gives us chance to play Rich in first final at MCG (assuming we finish 8th)
Carl beats Hawks - knocks Hawks out of the race and also puts Carl ahead of Norf for Hrovat compo
Geel beats GWS - ensures a Vic club finishes top 2 so there's hope to draw an MCG PF if we make it that far
BL beats Norf - consign Norf to the spoon and better Hrovat compo pick
I'm discounting major boilovers like Melb losing either of their matches or Ess doing so.
Imagine Dogs sneak into 8th and play Rich in first final. We then play Syd (who loses to Adel in 1 v 4 QF). Cats beat GWS in 2 v 3 QF at the Cattery. We then cop Syd at the SCG and conjure up a miracle, which takes us to Geel at the MCG for a PF.
I like to dream :D

Geel beat GWS by a couple of goals or more - more likely than not at the Cattery
Rich beat StK by any margin - more likely than not
Swans to make up tiny % difference on Port and finish 5th - possible, both have easy games next week
If these things happen GWS will finish 4th and have to travel to Adel first up. If they lose they will likely cop the Swans in Sydney in week 2 - straight sets would be a nice outcome for those pricks.

Then there was "Billy you are the king of Geelong" or whatever he said when Brownless sunk us that night and the other 12 finals to One record or whatever it is that they have over us and the fact that Chris Scott still hasn't lost a game to Bevo.

Ross Lyon has always put strategic positioning above winning when going into finals and I have a gut feel the same is true at this moment with draft picks.
We desperately need Collingwood to knock off Melbourne on Saturday, which would mean a Fremantle win will not impact their ladder position and we may just see them turn up and have a red hot crack. Only a few short weeks ago this team should have knocked off GWS in Sydney.

We would have had to beat both Port and Hawthorn, which would have got us 7th and away against Sydney
If we beat GWS as well, we would have finished 6th and played Port at home

After being concerned about our low percentage all year, it looks like the only other team on the same number of wins will be St Kilda whose percentage is even lower, and we wish it was the other way around!

Agree. The Saints picked Billings and left the Bont to us. Makes little difference having either 8 or 9 pick. Depends how astute the recruiter is.

I should've added, for the right player. If there's a gun on the market that addresses our needs, we should be exploring it. If we can't get a top level player, then for sure, take a punt at the draft with Dal.

Then we will lose value. For some reason one spot makes the world of difference in a trade (pick 8 is worth far more than pick 9) but it seldom makes that much difference when you're drafting. Sure there are situations like Ben Long being taken the pick before we were going to take him but Ben Long ain't worth tanking games for.

Actually now that we can't win can we just give GWS the *!*!*!*!ing premiership so we can all stop worrying about what the next thing the AFL are going to do to try and destroy the game in order to give GWS another leg up?
Don't even play the finals series. Call a stop to the season and present the cup to GWS now. That's how much of a farce it will be if ever they win a flag anyway so we might as well get it out the way.

They could go all the way but the AFL would try and do everything for them to win before the decade is out. I think the Crows will beat them in the qualifying final as it is in Adelaide at Spotless they would be slight favourites.

Lets see:
-Adelaide - i hate them. They sook way too much so no
-Geelong - sick of them so no
- Richmond - Should be the team to root for. But their fans are just so irritating. So arrogant from nothing. It'd be hilarious to see them out in straight sets
-GWS - no friggin way
-Port - don't care about them
-Sydney - don't seem to mind them but after Longmire sooked it up i can't stand them anymore
-Essendon - cheats
-West Coast - don't care but they've had their day
So for me it's Port. And it should be Richmond but their fans drive me nuts. So the fact that it's Port means i couldn't care less.

By my reckoning Sydney have the fewest punchable heads of those participating, and it's hard not to admire their resolve this year.
The rest of them can GAGF, especially you GWS. Them failing, whoever the eventual premier, will be reward enough on its own.

Yep, but Essendon right alongside GWS at the foot of your table. Hird giving the Norm Smith to Watson or Goddard is as unpalatable a scenario as could be envisaged.
Port are the sleepers for me. They have genuine match winners who have performed on the big stage previously. They'll take care of West Coke and would fancy their chances against a supremely overrared GWS in week 2. They then cop Richmond or Geelong in a PF, neither of whom would worry them.

I'd be sick if Essendon won but I hate GWS that much. Thankfully, the Bombers will likely get a thumping in week one and that will be the highest peak they reach.
Port are definite smokies but they're just as likely to turn their toes up. Hard to get a read on them.

That's true, but if you recall, Essendon were coming off the bye and the Swans a six day break from a tough game interstate against a flag contender.

I called Essendon as Premiers about a month ago so I will reluctantly stick to self interest.
When Essendon get beaten I will go across to the Swans or Port and if they are no longer in it then it's Spring Carnival and cricket season. A test match being played makes the transition easier, although Australia are doing their best to get it over with quickly.

I lived through the late 60s and that wasn't so bad for the footy romantic, it was a great team full of stars and with a likeable coach in Tom Hafey. Only the meanest of people could begrudge them that success. By 73-74 however there boof head supporters were everywhere and an arrogant, crowing Richmond supporter combines the sportsmanship of your average Essendon supporter along with the goodwill of your average Collungwoid supporter. They are an ugly, ugly supporter base that react worse to success than any Victorian club.
And Matthew Knights and his mate honest Wayne Campbell.

I saw Richmond win in '67 in what was one of the great grand finals. So it's Tigers for me. Then Port. Ken Hinckley seems like a good bloke. Swans next. Their supporters were pretty gracious in defeat.
Throw a blanket over the rest. I detest them equally.

That moment when Royce Hart plants his boot in Denis Marshalls(?) face during the 1967 grand final while he was running backwards flying for a mark is one of the great moments on footy history. What a mark! And it's less than a goal the difference late in the last quarter when he dies it.
Royce Hart is the best player I've seen.

I was referring to those around me during the game. Don't know too much about their reaction after the dust settled as I went back to Indonesia. Seems it was pretty sooky. Can't bring myself to dislike them that much ad a close mate, when I was kid, barracked for them and we always used to travel to the Lake Oval to watch the Dogs and South - games we would usually win. They were always down like us so I had a soft spot for them.
I terms of rooting I could never put GWS, Adelaide, Geelong the Cokers or Essendon ahead of them.
