It seems folks love this thread, in its differing formats. If you don't know the rules, I will nominate a player with the question. Whomever is first to guess the player successfully, gets to nominate the next player and so on and so on. However, if you don't log into the thread within 24 hours to confirm/deny nominations, to keep the thread moving anyone can then jump in and start a new player question going.

Suggestions: If the Who Am I needs to be a little vague to keep interest, maybe chuck in a decade or so so we can focus on trying to test our general knowledge.

Does it need to be said?: Please do not use the google machine when guessing. It's an interesting test of general knowledge. But if you want to use records/Google machine to form a question, that's cool.

So, Who Am I?

I was drafted by the Bulldogs in the last 25 years, and I am no longer on our or any AFL list. I was drafted quite highly, but I only played about the same amount of games in number as the number/position I was drafted. As such, there was expectation on me to deliver and rise to these expectations, but after a handful of years, we parted ways.

Who am I?

Gee there's a list of well known players we drafted or picked up from interstate or the country in the 80s and 90s that pretty much laughed at us.

Worse still there were quite a few we recruited that turned up and played, well they were on the field during games anyway.

I played for the bulldogs in the 80's. Prior to the Bulldogs I played with another VFL club but after I finished with them I had a 3 years in another league before arriving at the Western Oval.

Russell Shields it is. A lively half forward flanker who previously played at Hawthorn and came to us via Centrals in the SANFL.

His debut for us was against the swans in round 1, 1988. I watched that game with former Swan Craig Potter and we both thought the Dogs had found a star. Only kicked 2 more goals in his other 2 games and disappeared.

And by "just missed out on playing in a Grand Final" this could mean one of two things. 1. His team missed the GF during his tenure or 2. He was not selected to play in a GF.

Dean Chiron it is.

Started with St.Kilda, moved to Footscray in 1986 for 1 senior game and transferred to Melbourne as a tagger. He played in their infamous 1987 preliminary final against Hawthorn where Jim Stynes ran across the mark at the end of the 4th quarter, giving Buckenara the extra 15 metres needed to slot a goal for them to win the game. Melbourne did go on to play in the 1988 GF but Chiron missed their final series.

The year after he left the Bulldogs is when he played in the losing VFL Grand final and kicked 2 goals. One of his team mate's that year won the Brownlow medal and would go to be one of the all time greats & a premiership coach much to our chagrin. These 2 also played together before they began their VFL careers (where our player won his 4 B&F's) and by all accounts formed a mighty partnership.

These 2 also played together before they began their VFL careers (where our player won his 4 B&F's) and by all accounts formed a mighty partnership.

To clarify - the brownlow medallist team mate was playing for the losing grand final team and not Footscray?

Dougie’s #7 predecessor Ray Huppatz!

Yep, no 7 Ray Huppatz. Went to North (and renewed that great ruckman/rover combination from Footscray) where he played in the ???? Grand Final (1978?) Ray worked with my dear old dad at the council depot in Southampton st in Weat Footscray) when he was playing for Footscray. Came over from a SA club, I can't remember which one but geez he was a gun. The storied tales of great #7s go back before Doug Hawkins.

thats it. Well done SquirrelGrip and well done to Westdog for conjuring out the clues!

Ray Huppatz was my first fave bulldogs player. He played at Woodville in the SANFL prior to joining us. He then became part of the great exodus of the era when so many of our best players left for other clubs. He would join his former Woodville team mate Malcolm Blight at North Melbourne and play in their beaten Grand Final side in 1978 before returning to the SANFL

Great Question

At first thought I came up with one of either Keenan Reynolds or Barry Standfield but I'm sure they didn't play state of origin. of that era was Greg Eppelstun who only played 1 game at North as i recall and although the memory is hazy I think he was called up for rep duty. The most unlikely state of origin player if ever there was one but he was a solid player for a while. i'll go with Greg Eppelstun

SquirrelGrip
24-10-2017, 05:41 PM
Well that didn’t last very long!

Yes, #12 Greg Eppelstun was the Dale Morris of his era, frequently stopping players bigger than him. Dermott Brereton was one great kill.

In 1991, he played State of Origin vs Tasmania, and only missed games between 1987 and 1991 because of injury.

But in ‘92, he played the year in the Reserves, apart from Round 14 vs Collingwood where he scored a Brownlow vote but was dropped the next week!

His one game at North Melbourne in 1993 was also the first game for John Blakey and Dean Laidley. He made way for a young defender Glenn Archer to make his debut.

Simon Minton Connell played for North Hobart in their 1987 Grand Final winning side as an 18yo full back. His team mate that day was Darren Davies who was drafted at no.7 in the 1987 draft. He is the nephew of the great Peter Hudson and therefore cousin of Paul Hudson, an All Australilan in 1998. He played 25 games for us and lost his place to fellow North Hobart recruit (via Carlton) James Cook.

There you go. I didn't think Polly got to 100 games with us. Gee he was a good footballer. The great thing is Collingwood payed us 100 000 dollars to choose him. We had the number one pick and Collingwood had number two. They desperately wanted to choose a player called Gary Walsh and when we found out we made a point of making a big fuss over Walsh and what a good player he was (even though we were always going to pick Purser) so Collingwood gave us 100 grand not to pick Walsh. And we didn't because we weren't going to anyway.

Ten new players and more than half played more than 50 games. But you are right, I just looked it up on AFL tables and I think that Robbie Semmens may have wore KT's 31 that day and I was mixing him up with Lunn.

I remember his first game deep in the last quarter with less than a goal separating us and Colingwood. Taylor gets a handball 25 metres out on the slightest of angles with lots of time to take the kick but he froze. Since 1965 there have been 5 players reach over 100 games with the club without registering a hit out. Name them.

Hint: Unsurprisingly all but 1 are under 180cm.

Daniel not close to 100 games yet. 3 hitouts for Gia.

There is only 1 player from the 60s/70s. 2 are current and 2 played in the 90s/2000s.

No guess for the 60s/70s.

But for the recent ones I'm gonna go with Gilbee, Dimmatina, Dahlhaus and Wood.

Correct.

Yes to Dahl and Wood. No to Gilbee and Dimmatina. Can't believe Wood has never got a hitout with his leap.

1 60s/70s player and 2 90s/00s players to go - all shortarses.

Wood already answered above and yes to Garlick.

2 to go - both came to the Bulldogs from other clubs.

Oh and has anyone said Bubba Smith yet?

No Bubba amassed a mighty 5 hitouts across his 300 games.

Of the 2 players left:
- Both 174cm or less
- Both came from other VFL/AFL teams
- 1 crossed to the Bulldogs in the late 60s (mid-season no less)
- 1 crossed to the Bulldogs in the mid 90s

And from the 60s, when you're on a good thing and all that, Merv Hobbs?

Actually did Merv Hobbs play 100 games? I dunno, I'm pretty sure he went to Willy pretty early in his career, 23 sounds right age wise. That's an appalling gap in my bulldog history.

No, not enough games for Merv and he didn't play for another club either.

Bloody hell, it's the bloke from South Melbourne. Took over from Whitten as captain in 1970 but got the chop as captain in 1971 for David Thorpe. Went to Yarraville in the VFA when they had lots of cash but couldn't get on the park. Ironically Thorpe was Captain Coach at Yarraville at the time.

Can't. Remember. His. Name!

Stu Magee?

That's him.

Magee, Romero, Garlick, Wood and Dahlhaus have all played over 100 games wihtout a hitout credited. Really surprised Wood never went third man up when it was allowed with his leap.

JJ, Hunter and Dickson could all join the club next year with game totals in the 80s.

Someone's up.

I will have a go.

Not an individual but a club.

In our VFL/AFL history, we have had 22 draws. Name the club we have had the most draws against and how many times?

No cheating

Ok, I'm going to assume it is a Victorian club - given we are going back thoughout history.

North's history isn't two dissimilar to ours, and I can at least remember 1 draw with them - so I'll say North - 3 times.

I can remember attending 2 draws against StKilda (one a high scoring game at Western Oval in the late 70s with Geoff Jennings kicking a bag and one a god awful match at Docklands in 2007 - hard to believe both teams were on the brink of strong eras).

i'll guess StKilda with 4.

I'm thinking Hawthorn. I think I have been to 3 draws with Hawthorn and 2 draws with Essendon. It might only be 2 draws with Hawthorn bit I'm sticking with them as my answer.

My answer is Hawthorn 4 draws.
