Right now we should say to guys like McLean and the Bont - rest up, no point rushing back for a lost cause season. Get the surgery on the shoulder. Let the knee heal. Maybe learn something from sitting on the sidelines whatching the team.

Medical update: Naughton, Morris in the mix (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-06-18/medical-update-naughton-morris-in-the-mix)

Dale Morris: “Making a fantastic recovery following his arthroscope that repaired the meniscus in his knee.

“We're going to work through a process with Dale this week and be really objective to make sure he's ready to return to play. We hope to come up with a clear time line of that in the next couple of days.”

Matt Suckling: “Has suffered some ongoing achilles soreness since the round 9 Adelaide game in the wet. We've made the most of the mid-season break to take some load out of his achilles.

“At this stage we're getting him back into some training and we're going to monitor his achilles to make sure it's tolerating those loads. We'll make a decision on Matt's return to play in coming days. “

Aaron Naughton: “Has had a really good block of training over the last three weeks since we managed him from his ankle injury and minor quad tightness.

“At this stage he's going to come back into full training this week and if he ticks all of our boxes he'll return to availability this weekend.”

Easton Wood: “Was involved in an incident on the weekend where he was running at full speed and then tripped over someone's leg.

“This caused him to land awkwardly and overstretch his hamstring. This mechanism has caused a high-grade hamstring injury. At this stage we're going to manage Easton conservatively but expect him to still miss the next 10-12 weeks.”

Lukas Webb: “Was involved in a tackle on the weekend where he broke a small bone in his thumb. He did get through the game but this bone did require surgery when we got down to Melbourne.

“At this stage he's come in really well following the operation but we still expect him to miss the next three weeks of footy.”

Jack Macrae: “In the final minutes of the second quarter on the weekend Jackson Macrae went to do a sprint and felt some awareness in upper part of his hamstring.

“Our clinical tests at half time did show us he might have a low level strain there. Then when we fitness tested him after the break he could not get to full speed and he did have some pain when he went to sprint.

“MRI have since confirmed that he does have a low grade hamstring injury and that he's probably going to miss the next three weeks.”

“Toby McLean: “Was involved in a collision early in the game on the weekend where he hurt his shoulder. He did get through the game and he's come in quite well today.

“We'll work through a process with Toby over the next couple of days to determine his availability this weekend.”

Some of the phrasing sounds like one of those stern-faced police sergeants at the scene of an accident, especially the description of Easton's injury. :) I half expected to read that a suspect was apprehended at the scene and is assisting with inquiries...

Bulldogs’ Dale Morris opens up of true toll of injuries (https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-on-the-mark-bulldogs-dale-morris-opens-up-of-true-toll-of-injuries/news-story/61f281d8e9d3ed53a9f8da0af6bba38d)

WESTERN Bulldogs veteran Dale Morris has opened up on the true toll his injuries has taken on his family revealing that the stress of his broken leg led to his wife Gemma to go into early labour.

Morris, a premiership player for the Dogs in 2016, has had a raft of injuries over his AFL career, which includes breaking his leg twice, breaking his back, breaking his arm and, more recently, partially tearing his ACL.

In an exclusive interview with Fox Footy’s On The Mark, an open Morris said that his broken leg in 2011 was the worst that he had, leaving ramifications on the whole family.

“The worst injury I’ve had is my broken leg in 2011,” Morris said.

“We had Riley who is two years old at that time and Gem was pregnant with our second child Charlie. Which doesn’t really sound like a big deal, but I was in a plaster cast up to my hip in a wheelchair and immobile.

“I couldn’t do anything, so a lot of stress and pressure goes on Gem and she’s a proud person too and says, ‘I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me’. It took its tole on Gem and probably just as much as me. And I hated it, because it’s hard to see someone you love and who is always there for you really doing it tough.”

Morris also believed that his wife’s early labour was the result of his 2011 leg injury, despite being assured by people that it wasn’t his fault.

“Gem at the time was 20, mid-20 weeks pregnant,” Morris explained.

“She ends up going into labour and everyone’s telling me, ‘It’s not your fault’ but I knew that it was all on me because of this significant injury and how much stress I put her under.

“It was quite tough and we had to race to hospital. If the doctors couldn’t get Gem under control with the contractions she was experiencing and the pain, then who knows what would’ve happened and I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself if anything had of happened.”

Morris also said that his injuries led to his son’s Charlie and Riley turning their back sport, to avoid being injured themselves.

“You talk about injuries, Charlie missed all of that, but unfortunately he’s still seeing quite a few injuries that I’ve been able to sustain, with my knee, my broken arm, broken back,” Morris explained.

“He did Auskick last year and this year rolled around and he liked the ideal of taekwondo as well and they clashed. So we sat him down and said do you want to play footy or would you like to do taekwondo, with any hesitation he said taekwondo.”

“I asked why do you want to do taekwondo — which is fine, whatever they want to do I’ll support them … Riley does scouts now which is great — it’s right down his alley. And I’m rapt for him, I’ll support him all the way and Charlie said, ‘I don’t want to do footy, because footy hurts dad’.”

Suckling to face test (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-06-25/suckling-to-face-test)

Matthew Suckling is in line to return this Friday night against Geelong, as he continues to recover from an achilles injury that has kept him sidelined for the past two weeks.

Suckling hasn’t played since the Club’s round 11 clash with Melbourne, and will face a test this week to be ready for the Cats.

“We have continued to reload Matty Suckling after his achilles tendon complaint,” Medical Services Manager Chris Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au

“At the moment he’s gone really well with a lot of our training progressions.

“He’s in line to return to full training this week and if ticks those boxes he’ll be considered available this weekend.”

Tim English and Bailey Dale have both resumed running after suffering similar bone stress injuries in their feet. The pair are expected to resume full training next week, according to Bell.

“Both Tim and Bailey are progressing (and) are on track to resume full training next week.

“We’ll confirm their return to play time line in the next seven to ten days.”

Medical update: Luckless Lin sidelined; Bailey Dale’s season over (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-07-02/medical-update-luckless-lin-sidelined-baileys-season-over)

Lin Jong has today undergone surgery on a broken collarbone and is expected to miss at least the next four weeks of football, while Bailey Dale will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury, the Western Bulldogs have confirmed.

Jong was a late inclusion Friday night’s win over Geelong but came down hard in a tackle in the early stages of the first quarter of Friday night’s match, taking no further part in the action.

The Bulldogs’ Medical Services Manager Chris Bell says Jong could return for the latter part of the season.

“Unfortunately Jongy landed on his shoulder in the first quarter of the game on the weekend, (and) this has caused the collarbone to break,” Bell said.

“Lin's had surgery this afternoon to stabilize the fracture and we expect him to miss the next four to six weeks.”

In a further blow for the Dogs, Bailey Dale will miss the remainder of the season after scans today confirmed the 21-year-old will need surgery on his foot.

“We've been really conservative in our management of Bailey Dale following his stress injury to the navicular bone in his foot,” Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au on Monday.

“We've monitored him really closely, but scans have confirmed that he's not responding well and we are going to have to go down the surgical path.

“We're going to put a screw into his navicular bone which is going to rule him out for the rest of the season.”

Matthew Suckling is also facing extended time on the sidelines after an achilles complaint saw him withdrawn from Friday night’s game minutes before the bounce.

“Although Matt ticked all of our boxes last week in the return from his achilles injury, I'm afraid that pre-game he had a flare up of his symptoms and we were required to withdraw him from the game.

“We're going to be really cautious with our approach with Suckers and make sure we get some continuity in his training and look for him to return in the next three to four weeks.”

In more positive news, Caleb Daniel will likely be available to play this weekend after recovering from reported knee soreness last week.

“We didn't want to take any risk that the knee soreness would linger so we rested him on the weekend,” Bell said. “He's come in well today and we fully expect him to train this week and be available.”

Ruckman Tim English will also return to full training this week as he continues his recovery from a foot injury that has sidelined since the Club’s round 7 win over the Gold Coast.

Western Bulldogs emerging utility Bailey Williams will miss the next 4-6 weeks of football with a foot injury.

Williams suffered soreness following the Bulldogs’ win over Geelong, with scans later revealing an area of low grade bone stress in a metatarsal in his foot.

The 20-year-old will be managed conservatively with a rehabilitation program.

Can this all be bad luck ? Stress issues are they load management related ? Think we at least need a review to ascertain what if anything we can do better. Tigers hardly have an injury. I get luck plays a part but c'mon !

Bummer. Williams has been fantastic this year and been enjoying very much his rise to absolute lock in as best 22 & progression to time in midfield. Oh well - gives another player a go (hopefully some of the ones that have not got a senior's game yet).

How many foot stress fractures have we had in last few years - two Baileys, Adams, any others? And is this more than average for other clubs?

Presume there is nothing we can do about Etihad/Marvel but has Whitten Oval been tested for hardness? Woofers who attend VFL games and regularly step onto playing surface - what are your thoughts?

Third foot injury leads Dogs to investigate link (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-06/third-foot-injury-leads-dogs-to-investigate-link)

WESTERN Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge admits he's concerned that three of his brightest young stars have succumbed to foot stress injuries this season.

Bailey Williams, Bailey Dale and Tim English have all had their promising 2018 campaigns hampered by the injury, with Williams the latest to enter the rehab group after complaining of pain in his metatarsal bone following the win over Geelong last week.

Dale will miss the remainder of the season with a navicular concern, while English will resume in the VFL this weekend after recovering from having his foot stepped on in late May.

Speaking on Friday morning, Beveridge said while the club believes there's no connection between the injuries, they're investigating why they have occurred.

"(The injuries are) a concern, and we're looking into it," Beveridge said.

"Tim was stepped on and his flared up, Bailey Dale's is navicular, whereas Bailey William's is a metatarsal, so they're all very different, but that doesn't mean we won't review what's going on in all the ways we manage our players.

"It just appears they're three very different injuries caused by different things, but we'll make sure we're clear on that."

Asked if the playing surfaces of the club's home ground, Etihad Stadium, and the Whitten Oval could have played a part in the injuries, Beveridge said he's been assured the hardness of both grounds are within the acceptable levels.

"We can't rule out (surface hardness), but all the Clegg testing tells us, according to the AFL, the Etihad surface results indicate that it's safe, the same with Whitten Oval," Beveridge said.

"If you compare both of the surfaces to the MCG, the MCG is considerably softer than those two surfaces, but they're all within parameters of acceptability so we've got to take that for what it's worth."

No one likes to see someone sustain a serious injury, but better blokes than Patton have done 3 ACLs.

What a perfect summation.

To be honest I think some of the commentary on this is ordinary.

So apparently we were all over Patton 4 years ago and the "media experts" used to have a go at us for picking Boyd instead of Patton, I wonder if they will now admit we did the right thing?

Well if I remember correctly he had already done one and had just done his second when we were chasing Boyd, the scribes were quick to announce we were after Patton big time and the next day we signed Boyd.
For the next two seasons they still were on the high horse we chose the wrong big forward.

Star mid set to return

The Western Bulldogs look set to regain midfielder Jack Macrae for the round 17 clash with Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday.

Macrae hasn’t played since injuring his hamstring against the Power at Adelaide Oval in June, but according to Club Medical Services Manager Chris Bell, he’ll play if he gets through training this week.

“He completed a really good footy session on the weekend and he's due to return to full training this week,” Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au.

“If he ticks our final measures this week he'll return to playing this weekend.”

There is less certainty around first year player Aaron Naughton after he rolled his ankle on Saturday night against Hawthorn according to Bell.

“He went to take off in a contest and got his boot caught on the back of his opponents heal and it rolled his ankle out, he said.

“He's come in really well today and we're going to work hard to aggressively rehabilitate him from the injury, and we'll make a decision on his return to play plan later this week.”

And Lukas Webb returns to full training this week after recovering from a thumb injury sustained

“We've been really conservative in the management of Lukas following his thumb fracture,” he said.

“The thumb's now fully healed and he comes back into full training this week. If he gets through training as we expect he'll play this weekend.”

Bontempelli to miss Dees clash (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-07-11/bontempelli-to-miss-dees-clash)

Western Bulldogs vice-captain Marcus Bontempelli has been ruled out of this Saturday’s match against Melbourne after having his appendix removed.

Bontempelli completed training on Tuesday without issue, but later suffered the onset of severe abdominal pain.

He was immediately referred to hospital with acute appendicitis and had surgery overnight.

Bontempelli is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks of football as he recovers from the operation.

I can't believe the medical staff allowed this to happen! Clearly his appendix was overloaded!

Seriously though if Macrae isn't back this week what's left of our poor old midfield is going to be slaughtered.

Perhaps the only positive is the 2 or 3 weeks off may help settle Bont's hip (or whatever it is that's limiting him) and allow him to finish off the year strongly.

2 to 3 weeks with an appendix ? 10 years ago players were only missing one week .. 2-3 is extreme, it's only pinhole surgery nowadays.
I Had mine out at 16 (38 years ago) mine was rushed took about 5 weeks that long ago , guessing it's more than just appendix.
Didn't Murphy of Carlton have his out not long ago and only miss a week ?

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but how does one remove an organ using keyhole surgery? You still need to physically remove the thing, don't you?

In year 10 work experience my first day was spent in a theatre watching them burn out a gall bladder via keyhole surgery.

The metal staples they use to clamp off the wound were pretty haphazard, not sure why I remember that.

It’s not an organ, and they can be tiny. Keyhole surgery is performed with several (3 I think) incisions being made, through which the appendix is removed.

Was heartbreaking the first time seeing Libba go down at the Whitten Oval in 2015 in the first AFL game back there in a long time. Had an excellent 2016, not very good 2017 and injured all of 2018 so hoping 2019 is a great year for him.

Boyd, Crozier in the mix to face Eagles (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-07-16/boyd-crozier-in-the-mix-to-face-eagles)

The Western Bulldogs could welcome back both Tom Boyd and Hayden Crozier for Sunday’s match against the West Coast Eagles in Perth, according to Club Medical Services Manager Chris Bell.

Boyd missed Saturday’s loss against the Demons after reporting back soreness, but according to Bell, he may yet make the trip west on the weekend.

“During the Hawthorn game, Tom Boyd had some acute lumbar spine disc symptoms, (and) his back went into spasm for 4-5 days following the game,” he said.

“In the last 24 hours he has really started to improve, so we'll work with Tom this week to determine his availability towards the back end of the week.”

Defender Hayden Crozier is also a chance to return but will face a test later in the week.
“Hayden had some hamstring tightness last week. It was really minor but we weren't prepared to play Hayden and expose him to any risk, he said.

“He's symptom free on all our tests today so we'll go through process with Hayden this week to determine his availability.”
Vice-captain Marcus Bontempelli is on the mend after he had his appendix removed last week and resumed running on Tuesday, Bell said.
“Marcus is continuing to recover really well from the removal of his appendix.

“At this stage he won't play this weekend but he's on track to resume the following week against Port Adelaide.”
And ruckman Tom Campbell will be unavailable this week due to a foot complaint.

“Tom’s had some persistent plantar fascia symptoms over the last three to four weeks, he said.
“He hasn't been able to shake these symptoms whilst continuing to play so we gave him the weekend off.

We'll also look at giving him this week off with the expectation that he then has a clean run at the back end of the season.”

Bulldog Webb fractures his neck (https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/bulldog-webb-fractures-his-neck-20180720-p4zskg.html)

Young Bulldogs midfielder Lukas Webb fractured his neck in a VFL game last week and will be in a neck brace for an extended period.

Webb was crushed in a tackle and suffered the serious injury which will now keep him indefinitely sidelined and in a neck brace for several months.

Scans have confirmed the midfielder suffered a hairline crack in the neck during the VFL game against Casey on the Sunday which was in the circumstances a good result given how close that came to being far more serious.

The injury was not the result of a head-high bump or heavy tackle from the side that caused a whiplash motion. It was described more as a compression injury in which he was jammed down.

The club will approach his recovery cautiously with Webb to wear a neck brace, required to rest and attempt no significant physical activity while the fracture heals. There is no specific time frame fow how long he will wear the brace and he will have regular scans to monitor progress.

After the brace comes off, he will again be monitored as he increases his physical recovery in training.

"[The injury] is to the neck, so with the neck and the back, it's just that spinal risk," Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said earlier this week as Webb was heading for further assessment.

"I'd rather not give any detail on the advisement of doctors, but they've just informed me he'll be out for the rest of the year.

"He sustained an injury during the game and the scans have shown it's a bit more serious than we thought it would be, so we'll take really cautious steps with him."

The promising young fringe midfielder has played 24 AFL games, including five this year, since being taken with pick 27 in the 2014 draft.

He began his career strongly, playing 10 games in his first season, but has struggled to cement a place in the team since then playing four or five games each season.

Just been going through the 2016 premiership team to see who’s missing between then and now.
It’s pretty shocking.

Bob Murphy (retired) didn’t play but was an inspirational presence around the club.

Players out from premiership 22
1. Matthew Boyd. (Retired) 292 games, ex captain. B&F winner All Australian. Great leader on and off field
2. Clay Smith. Missed entire year and retired due to chronic knee soreness. One of our best for entire 2016 finals campaign.
3. Libba. Out for year with ACL. B&F winner.
4. Liam Picken. Missed entire year. Concussion. One of our best for entire 2016 finals campaign.
5. Jake Stringer. 42 goals in 2016. All Australian 2015. Traded out.
6. Joel Hamling Traded out (requested to go home to WA)
7. Easton Wood. Captain. (B&F winner All Australian) Hamstring 6 weeks out
8. Marcus Bontempelli. (Dual B&F winner All Australian) Appendix operation.
9. Tory Dickson. 40 goals in 2016. Chronic hamstring. Only played 5 games this year.
10. Tom Boyd. Back soreness.

And here’s the list of players who would be definite or hovering close to best 22 who were out last weekend.

1. Suckling. Achilles
2. Lin Jong. Collarbone
3. Lucas Webb. Neck (season)
4. Bailey Dale. Foot (season)
5. Bailey Williams. Foot
6. Jack Redpath. Knee (indefinite)

Medical update: Dahl done for season; Bonti back (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-07-23/medical-update-dahl-done-for-season-bonti-back)

Luke Dahlhaus will miss the remainder of the 2018 with a serious ankle injury, while Marcus Bontempelli is a certain starter for Sunday’s clash with Port Adelaide in Ballarat, according to Western Bulldogs medical services manager Chris Bell.

Dahlhaus was brought down in a tackle in the early stages of the second quarter of Sunday’s 54-point loss to the West Coast Eagles, immediately grabbing his left ankle and leaving the ground assisted by trainers.

Bell said it’s a 6-8 week injury, effectively ending the 25-year-old’s season.

“The mechanism of the injury has damaged the high ankle area, or the syndesmosis part of his ankle,” he told westernbulldogs.com.au.

“This is notoriously slow to heal, and we expect at this stage for his recovery to take six to eight weeks, which is going to rule him out for the remainder of the season.”

Vice-captain Marcus Bontempelli, however, has received the all-clear to resume against the Power on the weekend at Mars Stadium.

“Marcus has completed a full week of training following the removal of his appendix,” Bell said.

“The surgeon has ticked off and he's feeling 100%, so he'll come back into full training this week and we expect him to be available.”

Midfielder Mitch Honeychurch is yet to receive the all-clear after colliding with Eagles captain Shannon Hurn on the weekend, despite the initial scans reporting no serious structural damage.

Honeychurch will undergo further scans before the full extent of any injury will be known.

“At the time of the injury he went down and when I got to him he did describe some next pain, so we were really cautious and took him off on the stretcher in a neck brace,” Bell said on Monday.

“Precautionary x-rays at the time showed that there was no serious structural damage to his neck. We're still working through a process with Mitch to work out the extent of his injury.

“He was a little bit dazed at the time of injury, but he's come in well today but we'll need to work through a process across the remainder of the week to work out his availability.”

In better news Lin Jong will return to full training this week following a smooth recovery from a collarbone injury, while Tory Dickson looks to at least a week away as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if our tanking tactics have just gone to another level. And the Bont returning is just a diversion.

Western Bulldogs sharp shooter Tory Dickson could be available for selection for the first time since round 11 according to Club medical services manager Chris Bell, as the Dogs get ready to welcome back a number of players before the season is out.

Hamstring injuries have kept the 30-year-old Dickson sidelined for all but five games this season but he is expected to return to full training this week.

“Tory had ticked all of our boxes following his hamstring injury,” Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au on Monday.

“He completed a really solid training session on the weekend in Ballarat. He'll come back into full training this week and if he ticks our boxes as we expect he'll (be available.)”

First year forward Billy Gowers can circle round 21 on the calendar according to Bell, while Easton Wood could return within a fortnight.

“Easton has been fantastic in his recovery from a hamstring injury, and he's probably progressed quicker than we initially expected,” he said.

“He's back into some high speed running and some football training. At this stage he's on track to return for the last few games of the year.”

The exact date of Tom Boyd’s return, however, is still up in the air he continues to recover from a back injury.

“The injury is quite volatile and did react poorly after the West Coast game,” Bell said.

“We will work through a process with Tom over the next couple of weeks to determine his availability and his returning to play plan.”

The news is mixed on Roarke Smith and Kieran Collins as they continue to recover from last Friday’s car accident.

Collins is expected to return to training on Thursday, while the timing of Smith’s return will be clearer in coming days, Bell said.

“Roarke got a cut to his head and he did have a mild concussion.”

“He has also got some decent bruising around his knee. So we will work through a process with Roarke over the next couple of days to determine his availability.”

There is a claim that a lot of the soft tissue injuries in the AFL are caused by the bye. The bye was designed to rest players but on the contrary they have been pushed hard during the bye and 3-6 weeks later, a lot of soft tissue injuries happen. Research to come out soon apparently.

From Bevo:

Marcus Adams’ injury

Adams emerged from last weekend’s game against Port Adelaide with a shoulder complaint and will miss Saturday’s game against the Saints.

“It's nothing major he's just got a little bit of a weakness there and some soreness.

“He was just a bit uncomfortable yesterday at training and didn't present like he was going to be able to perform at his best tomorrow so we pulled him out. “

“He should be ok.”

Medical update: Trio of Dogs to face tests
(http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/injury-news)

Roarke Smith, Marcus Adams and Billy Gowers all face tests to prove their fitness ahead of Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.
Smith suffered an concussion in the early stages of Saturday night’s win over St.Kilda, and medical services manager Chris Bell has told westernbulldogs.com.au that the Club will be cautious with the 21-year-old before giving him the all-clear to return.

“He's come in quite well today but we'll need to be conservative in our management of Roarke over the next week,” he said.
“We'll go through our process of tests to make an accurate decision on his return to play plan.”

A rotator cuff injury kept Marcus Adams on the sidelines last week, but according to Bell he’ll come into consideration if he ticks the right boxes.
“We're going to work with Marcus this week to determine his availability,” Bell said.

“But he'd have to come back with full strength and function (in his shoulder) so we'll work through a process over the next couple of days.”
Livewire forward Billy Gowers is also close to selection, with the Club’s current leading goal-kicker recovering well for an ankle injury.
“He completed a great footy session on the weekend,” Bell said.

“He's still got a fair few boxes for us to tick this Thursday, but once he gets through those tests we'll determine his availability.”

Ruckman Tom Campbell is expected to be available after he was a late withdrawal from Saturday’s win over Frankston.

So he's done for the year in other words.

An injury that was considered so minor he played out the game he sustained it in, now the back half of his season is written off due to its severity. An end of season clean out of our medical team cannot come soon enough.

Boot in head sees Cordy's forehead cracked (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-12/boot-in-the-head-sees-cordys-forehead-cracked)

FRACTURED forehead has Western Bulldogs defender Zaine Cordy in doubt to return this season, but the damage isn't as bad as it could be.

Cordy, 21, was injured in the second quarter and went off the field under the blood rule after being on the end of an errant left boot from North Melbourne big man Ben Brown in the immediate aftermath of a marking contest.

"He's got a little fracture in his forehead," Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said.

"It's just a bit of bad luck. I think the big fella Brown came down on him after a marking contest. We think he's OK."

Beveridge believed it could have been worse.

"Obviously if it was too depressed, it'd be seriously concerning," Beveridge said.

"Hopefully he's OK and he hasn't got much of a dint in his head and he doesn't bleed much and he's all right. It seems like he's pretty stable and it's not as bad as it could be, even though it's not flash

The backman is unlikely to be fit to face Carlton next Sunday at Etihad Stadium.

"You can (play) with a (fractured) cheekbone, but I suppose with the brain being right behind your forehead, I'd hazard a guess he mightn't be available next week," Beveridge said.

Medical update: Cordy to miss clash with Blues (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-08-13/medical-update-cordy-to-miss-clash-with-blues)

Western Bulldogs key defender Zaine Cordy has been ruled out of Sunday’s match against Carlton after specialists confirmed a minor fracture to his frontal sinus.

Cordy was taken to hospital following the incident in the second quarter, after the boot of Kangaroos’ forward Ben Brown collided with his forehead.

Bulldogs’ Medical Services Manager Chris Bell told westernbulldogs.com.au that the Club will be cautious with the 21-year-old before giving him the all-clear to return.

“Zaine suffered an injury in the second quarter of the game where an opposition’s boot landed on his forehead,” said Bell.
“This contact has caused a minor crack to the frontal sinus in his head.

“We’ve consulted with a specialist today and we will manage Zaine conservatively.
“He won’t play this week but we’ll work with a specialist to determine his availability for next week.”

The Bulldogs are set to regain skipper Easton Wood this week, who has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in Round 13.

“Easton has been fantastic in his recovery following his high-grade hamstring injury,” Bell said.

“He really has left no stone unturned in trying to get back this season.

“He completed our final measures on the weekend in terms of his training loads and he’ll come back into full training this week.

“If he gets through full training as we expect, he’ll be available this weekend.”

Defender Roarke Smith could also be available for selection after he missed the Dogs’ win over North Melbourne.

Injured Bont's no diver, says Beveridge (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-19/injured-bonts-no-diver-says-beveridge)

MARCUS Bontempelli is in doubt for the Western Bulldogs' final home and away season game against Richmond next week after battling through a back injury in Sunday's 17-point win over Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Coach Luke Beveridge revealed the star midfielder barely trained this week after he landed heavily on his back in an aerial contest with North Melbourne's Luke McDonald early in last weekend's game between the Dogs and Kangaroos.

Despite gathering 37 disposals in a superb effort, Bontempelli was limited for much of Sunday's contest and was hesitant to sit on the interchange bench when he did come off the ground in case his back seized up on him.

"He's a tough young fella. He got through today, but he was in a fair bit of pain and under a fair bit of duress," Beveridge said in his post-game press conference.

"So, he's had an outstanding game for a player who's had that to confront."

Bontempelli received a controversial free kick for an elbow from Carlton's Jed Lamb to his back that led to a Lin Jong goal in the final quarter, which saw Bulldogs skip out to a 15-point lead.

Bontempelli went to ground despite apparent minimal contact, much to the chagrin of Blues fans who thought the midfielder staged for the free kick.

"I haven't seen the replay and I didn't see what happened off the ball, but he got a hit right on that spot that he landed on last week," Beveridge said.

"There's no way Marcus Bontempelli would ever take a dive."

Bontempelli spent the majority of the game in the midfield, with the Bulldogs having to change his role and not have him spend as much time in attack as he is used to.

"Because he was off the boil he probably wasn't as mobile as a forward as he would be a midfielder, so we had to make sure we spent 100 per cent as a midfielder with him so he would stay active," Beveridge said.

"He did an outstanding job and he had a big influence on the game."

Medical update: Bont a chance for Tigers (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-08-20/medical-update-bont-a-chance-for-tigers)
Marcus Bontempelli will face a test this week to see if he’ll be available for Saturday’s clash with ladder-leaders Richmond at the MCG, after battling a lower back injury over the past week.

Bontempelli fell heavily against North Melbourne in Round 21 and was restricted in his preparation for Sunday’s 17-point win over Carlton, but he remains a chance to face the Tigers.

“Although his symptoms did improve toward the back end of last week they were aggravated during the game on the weekend,“ Western Bulldogs medical services manger Chris Bell said.

“We'll work hard to get Marcus right this week, and will determine his availability later in the week.”

A foot stress injury has kept Bailey Williams sidelined since Round 15, but according to Bell, the promising young Dog’s season may not be over just yet.

“Bailey has completed the end stage rehab from his footy stress injury,” he said.

“He completed a really good footy session on the weekend. He'll come back into a full training model this week and if he gets through as I expect, he'll return to playing this weekend.”

Defender Shane Biggs could also come into consideration this week after missing the past fortnight with general knee soreness, while Fletcher Roberts and Nathan Mullenger-McHugh were both withdrawn from Footscray’s loss to Essendon with concussion symptoms.

The Club will worth through a process with the doctors this week to determine their availability.

Surgery Begins:

WESTERN Bulldogs star Jason Johannisen will have off-season surgery to correct a lingering hip injury.

The 25-year-old had been battling the complaint in the latter part of the season, and will go under the knife early next week.

The Bulldogs hope the minor clean-up won't hinder his preparation for the 2019 pre-season that will begin on November 19.

Despite playing all 22 games, Johannisen's season reflected an inconsistent Bulldogs outfit that missed the finals for the second consecutive season.

The 2016 Norm Smith Medallist finished the season strongly, averaging 29 disposals in the last four matches, where the Dogs went 3-1.

Johannisen's surgery adds to a long list of Bulldogs injuries in the latter half of the season.

Regulars Marcus Adams (shoulder), Luke Dahlhaus (ankle), Bailey Dale (foot), Tory Dickson (hamstring), Lin Jong (sternum), Jack Redpath (knee), Matt Suckling (Achilles), Zaine Cordy (facial fracture) and Lukas Webb (neck) missed the final round.

Tom Liberatore ruptured his ACL in the opening round of the season, while Liam Picken (concussion) failed to play this season but has been cleared to continue in 2019.

I have heard The Bont talk about it on RSN radio and he says it is not a big issue. I am sure we will find out if he has an operation.

He mentioned at the AFLPA award night that the hip gave him troubles in the early part of the season and was fine come season end, but he had back issues towards seasons end.

He was also adamant that there would be no off season surgeries required.
