Going by how our younger brigade performed against Essendon I would be disappointed not to seen Naughton, Richards and English nominated this year. English must of been close this week.

I didn't see Sam Murray's game, but I would have thought English should have won this week. A young 5 gamer taking on the responsibility of almost rucking the whole game, plus taking marks and picking up possessions.

I would be interesting how they critique the players. Waterman got 77 and Paddy 68 on that score thingy they have with the stats.

Waterman has played every game, Lipinski only the 2. You either have to have a ripper game or have a body of work behind you. Had English, Richards or Naughton had better games they would have been a chance.

Yes, hes been in the coaches votes at least twice - and hes playing a tougher role as a key position defender

In fairness to Henry he plays a pretty similar role to Naughton and not dissimilar season long stats. He had a blinder on Friday night, including 10 intercept marks. Naughton's turn will come.

That's a fair call. Good player and played well on the weekend.
I had just assumed Witherden was already nominated at some point. Just came into the Lions side and started getting 20+ from day one. I doubt he's had a bad game.

Sunday was probably not his best game and should have been nominated in the earlier rounds.

Usually happens at some point with the Rising Star. Like an actor getting an Oscar for a body of work rather than the average performance they were actually nominated for.

The Marisa Tomei rule. Judi Dench ended up getting a best supporter actor for a film (I think it was Shakespeare in Love) that she was pretty much an extra (about 5 minutes screen time) in because they were ting to catch up with he award that Jack Pallance awarded to Tomei (and that Tomei refused to give back, apparantly during the next ad break they explained what had happened to Tomei and asked if she would give the Oscar back and she said "no, I won't be doing that")

Ed Richards, nominated for round 10
Sam Landsberger writes:
Richards grew up with Collingwood star Dale Thomas on his bedroom wall and he might’ve joined Daisy at Carlton, if not for arriving 40mins late to a pre-draft interview. Traffic jam helped lead him to Whitten Oval. Signed until 2021.

FIRST-YEAR Western Bulldogs dasher Ed Richards is the round 10 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee.
Richards produced the best performance of his nine-game AFL career on Friday night against Collingwood with 23 disposals (10 contested), eight intercept possessions and five inside 50s.
The 18-year-old defender is the grandson of Magpies premiership player Ron Richards, brother of the legendary Lou Richards, who captained that 1953 Collingwood Grand Final side.
A knee injury in the opening TAC Cup round last year cost him the chance to play for Vic Metro, but he produced a strong finish to the season with Oakleigh Chargers and Caulfield Grammar.
The Bulldogs ultimately swooped on Richards with the 16th pick, cementing him as a draft bolter.
He had to wait until round two to make his AFL debut, but has played every match since, averaging 15 possessions and 3.2 tackles per game.

That's interesting, Ron Richards daughter Sian was my English teacher at Footscray High away back in the 1970s. She must be Ed's Aunty I guess.

He really has looked like he can fill that Robert Murphy sized hole across our half back line at times this year. With a bit of size and a bit of experience Ed will become a weapon with that footcannon of his.
I love how when he makes a mistake or he doesn't win a contest he's straight back on the bike going at the next one twice as hard. Ed doesn't drop his head or go into his shell. It's an endearing trait that I wish he would share with a few teammates.

What a load of bollocks.
On the weekend Taylor had 13 possessions, 5 marks, 5 tackles. Naughton 18 possesions, 4 marks, 1 tackle. Similar games in the same role. Naughton however made the AFL player ratings team of the week. Then look at their seasons to date and explain how Taylor gets nominated over Naughton:

Worpel deserved it this week but yeah, Naughton and Lippa should have received nominations earlier. Sier was extremely stiff this week as well.
Lol at Ben Long, Hunter Clark, Sam Taylor and Tom Cole nominations.

Francis took 6 intercept marks + he plays for Essendon.
No doubt Naughton deserves a nomination due to his body of work, but the AFL generally make a mess of these types of things so no surprise they have missed him.

It is nice to see our lads recognised but I stopped caring about this award when 1. Libba never got a nomination 2. Bontempelli was robbed by a bloke who isn't worthy to carry Bonts boots and 3. Caleb Daniel was robbed (even though Mills is at least a decent player).
The non nomination of Naughton is an absolute joke. He's good enough to be in the top 5.
Oh and 4. McGrath winning in a landslide last year. Voted by Essendon sympathisers because they think they were dealt with harshly for giving their players banned substances. Give me Charlie Curnow, Burton or Powell-pepper before McGrath any day.

No he's played more than 10 games this season.
The biggest disgrace was the week Taylor (who?) from GWS was nominated with inferior stats to Naughton.
Read Mick Warner in the Herald Sun say if he had to pick any of the Rising Stars he would take Richards, even over Stephenson.

Should be, Francis was bloody drafted in 2015  Francis is now magically a rising star when his currency wouldn't have been worth a bag of peanuts at the end of 2017 when Aaron hadn't even been drafted yet. He's more of a mature ager by now than a rising star. Joke of an award.

I heard that too but every time Caddy was in the vicinity of the ball Francis seemed to be on him. Much easier for the Essendon sycophants in the media to pin those goals on the spud of the team.

Agree completely. There are so many possibilities using the coaches votes and chamionship data and instead they pick a subjective method chosen by a bunch of journalists and ex players! Has the potential to be great.
