Attending training this morning with approx. 12 supporters – a non advertised training session.
Missing from training were: Eagleton, Skipper.
Players restricted to physio, boxing, & bikes were: Gia, Williams, Bouman, & Lynch.
A significant part of training consisted of ball handling sessions – both kicking and handballing in team contests – not unexpected for this time of year.
A practice match followed using the full length of the oval.
A few observations:
Aker: looked fit & ‘cat like’ (always ready to pouch), read the play well, had speed to burn. Outplayed Ward (how showed glimpses himself), and will have a better season this year.
Wight& McDougall: played against one another – broke even.
Hudson: we have a ruckman (we know that), but seeing a smart, athletic, big marking player who knows his trade will provide a lot confidence to the team – a good replacement for the Darcy of old.
Street: Bigger body, moving better both in drills & around the ground in match play – a second ruckman.
Minson: Played forward, not spectacular, but a good foil for Hudson, when both lined to compete in the ruck on the forward line (Street couldn’t man up both – easy down to a running player). Seemed to work a few times.
Stack: looked good in the forward pocket – stronger than our other small forwards – starting to display the ‘X’ factor we had hoped from our Indigenous player.
Welsh: great seeing him move freely. Played on the half back flank, good reader of the game, marked and kicked well (Nbr 11 in Firstgogonthemoon’s photos).
Grant: can read the game, but lacks ball handling practice (playing with a brace on his left forearm), however, kicked a very long goal from the boundary line. Will improve, looks promising.

A few after thoughts:
Hill vs O’Shea: pitted against one another; a good contest, with both players being very competitive, and worth watching their progress. A smaller agile forward Vs a taller athletic player (O’Shea could become another Morris – good body size and height – almost as tall as Everitt when standing alongside one another).
Lake & Wight: Both pulled up a little sore in the hammy area, requiring ice & physio.
Didn’t look serious.
Murphy & Hahn: Both look more advanced than when they first played last season – would have to expect better seasons ahead. Already moving very freely and demanding the ball.
Harbrow & Cooney; Both moved very well, good at ground level, prepared to take on their opponents.
Callum Ward: As mentioned earlier, out played by Aker, but remained competitive, and did a couple of nice things – could be player. Would like to see these two play on one another in a few weeks to measure Ward’s progress.
That’s about it.

Possibly Mulligan - one I didn't notice on the field.
Just out of interest, for those who can remember what Bob Murphy looked like when first arrived at the dogs - nothing like a potential AFL player - just have peak at Henry White.
A very fast wingman from SA - you would never pick him as a footballer.
Hope the club can build up his body - Good luck to him.

White looks like a kid on work experience and I agree that Murphy and probably Ray had similar builds when they arrived. White is a good mover and must be viewed as a long term prospect.

Judging by those photos Reid has the potential to be huge. His frame is massive for a guy his age.

He's a well put together lad. He has a real athletic appearance about him and I think he could be a bit like Mitch Hahn in the first season or two.

Seems like everything is going really well at the moment, very pleased to hear that Gia seems over his knee issues.

Great reports & photos.
Gia looks solid, nice to see. Williams is quite possibly Hulk in disguise, whilst Reid really looks impressive body wise.

Can't he kick either? :D
Reid is a likely looking footballer - will be interesting to see how his disposal skills hold up.

At the Wesley East-West training day a car in front of us pulled over by the side of the road and this young kid hopped out with a bag and ran across to the oval, while his mum took off to park. Thought it must have been a school student late for some sport training. After we'd parked and walked up to have a look at the boys I realised that it was White. He is very very skinny.
Thanks to all for reports and photos to all. Much appreciated.
Can't wait for this all to kick off.

How did Reid & Mulligan go in the match?
Can't help with useful info on either - I actually thought Reid might have been Mulligan as he looked very tall (apparently 187cm) alongside the boxing coach (but they all do) and Gia - couldn't line 'him' up against Williams.
The players on the sidelines alternated between physio/boxing/bikes on the field, and training in the rooms, following printed routines.
The match was played at a very fast pace for all quarters (or possibly 'fifths') of about 10 to 12 minutes each. A number of players were either wearing the wrong numbers ('itsy-bitsy' Everitt wearing white 42 - with his hair cut), or no numbers on their singlets. That was before they swapped singlets during the match.
Furthermore, the match was played 'off centre', towards the outer - anything to confuse the few spectators.
In addition, we have;
- Peter Street being much more solid (refer to the photo of the ruck contest against Hudson, with the house in the background)
- Everitt looking like Skipper in body shape, height, and hair style, but wearing that dam #42 - in the same photo
- a slimmer Will Minson (occasionally being mistaken for one of the taller recruits - when his number was covered) or, as in the photo prior to the one mentioned above, thought there were 3 big bodied 'Wills' playing in the blue singlets.
I would recommend players have their numbers printed (large) on the back of their shorts.
Haven't answered your question, but hope I've been able to share some of the confusion I went through.
