First goal is Billy, with a massive stiff arm fend off in the goalsquare.
BOG is the Bont, they cant tag both Bont and Jack.
This is a supremely winnable game, this is the making or breaking of us this year.

Arranged a work trip over here for the last few days and heading back into Adel for tonight's game... Nice that we are half a chance too.
I am giving us some hope tonight....but ultimately think Adelaide's system on that ground will be too much.

Interesting stats.
We are number one for marks inside 50, Adelaide 12th and we are second for marks overall, and Adelaide 3rd.
We are also 6th in clearances and Adelaide 14th, even though Adelaide hitouts total is 321 to ours 187.
We must take advantage of the marks inside 50 and goal accurately.

I like those clearance stats. With wet conditions, winning clearances is a big advantage. Their best clearance players, Sloane and Crouch, are out so this should be an advantage for us. Their best clearance winner this year has been Bryce Gibbs, he is a player we will need to watch. If we have an onballer play defensively, Gibbs is the player we probably need to target (as well as Laird on the outside).

With Honey and Jong out, I imagine our only really nullifying player with be Caleb on Laird and we'll back our midfield in to go head to head.
They'll be one short on attacking types given Greenwood will run with Macrae I assume, although I suspect when Macrae is not in the middle they'll structure up to ensure McLean doesn't get a clean run at the ball.

They will have to contend with Macrae, Mclean and The Bont, plus we need a big game from Dahl who was down last week.
I am expecting Bont to play more midfield time with a couple of talls coming in.

I'm tipping the Bont and Macrae will tear this game up. The crows are missing too many in the middle to be a threat and if our young kids don't go into their shell, these two will star. Macrae with another 40+, Bont with a 2-3 classy big game goals.

Fremantle spent 6 years trying to turn Crozier into an AFL footballer with no success, why we thought we'd give it another couple of years is beyond me. He's never been up to it and has barely improved in nearing on a decade.

I don't get why commentators are up in arms about the Webb free.
I don't care if Talia was going the same way. He slowed and with Webb in very close pursuit chose to dive on the ball. Webb had nowhere to go and was only ever going to get his knee taken out in the ensuing collision.
Talia chose to drop to the ground. He could've tried to pick the ball up and accept the tackle..and a ball up could've ensued.
He knew the greater risk in the conditions was that to do so would've seen the ball get knocked from his grasp from Webb's tackle and so chose instead to dive on the ball.
Take the risk accept the penalty.
Again I say what else from behind could Webb do other than collide withTalia once he chose to go to ground. That resulting collusion could've seen Webb do his knee.

If he's banged on about it pre game, and end of each break thereafter then the player's have to be at fault.

Seriously, do you think we're that arrogant from a coaching perspective, with a young team that has questionable skills as it is, to say let's handball our way through these horrible conditions?
Seriously?
The issue should be about our line coaches not drumming basics into their areas if anything, and going as tall as we did. If it was a coaching and match committee issue.
We're clearly poorly lead on the field. Stopping the handball, and choosing to kick if the former is a pattern in normal conditions is something that needs to be policed on the field as it's happening.

Nah, this was a very winnable game. Teams after a Showdown normally have a let down the following week, and they clearly had injury woes tonight (that were masked by the conditions to be fair).
We shot ourselves in the foot with really dumb set-ups and dumb ball use. And we picked 3 ruckmen tonight after going in with 1 ruckman the week before at Etihad.

It was probably forced on us to some extent. In an ideal scenario Boyd partnered with Schache might have been the better option with Trengove as a back up as well but Schache just didn't have the miles in the legs for this game.
We did get the selections wrong though.

There was a horrible sense of déj* view about tonight with last years Crows game. Pissing with rain, in it at half time, one way scoring thereafter.
As disappointing as we were, as disappointing as our selections were (the irony of finally having so many talls on a night not suited to talls), I still think any chance we had of actually winning went out the window with the “free kicks directly in front of goal” differential. The McGovern one was a sign of what was to come (could have picked ten free kicks like that prior to this that weren’t paid) and I counted 5 of the first 7 Adelaide goals that were directly from frees. Were we that undisciplined?

I don't think our midfield bats deep enough to go in one short - would much rather extra mids to rotate through than a 2nd ruck who competes 5-10 mins a qtr. I'd rather that set-up in dry conditions, let alone tonight.

Our lack of skill and class showed up in the wet conditions.
Only Bontempelli Macrae and Williams looked A Grade Players. The forward line with 52 advances into the forward 50 for two goals tells the sorry story. Dale Dunkley and Gowers really struggled in attack. Our overuse of handball in the conditions was a major contributor to the defeat. It was so painful to see Eddie Betts confident about his ability to kick a goal no matter where. We lack class on the forward line, badly, but the indirect zig zagging into the forward line was just horrible. But, when we did kick it, the wet ball just magnified that we have so many poor kicks.
The first half effort was terrific but you knew that with so little reward in a gruelling slog, it could get ugly. And it did.
This is where we are at right now, I’m afraid. We have a lot of gritty midfielders but few are polished. The “silky” players - Webb and Dale - just don’t give enough. The form of Wood and Roughy is tough to watch at present, shadows of themselves.

Disappointing night watching from home and even more so for those who travelled over or who live in SA and went to the game.
Really thought we would be a chance tonight. I can't fault the effort tonight we tackled well and got the ball inside 50 but we did not do what matters most - kick goals. This is such a huge issue that hasn't not gotten any better and we are just sick of it now - action needs to be taken in how we can get more when we get it inside 50.
2.14 for the whole game is very embarrassing. I know it was a wet and slippery night out there but still the Crows managed 8 goals.
So onto next Friday night now against the Pies back at Etihad Stadium. It will be me (Doggies supporter) vs my brother (Pies supporter).

On a night like this, isn't that more reflective of tactics rather than execution? Its not as if they were drilling precision kicks to forwards on the lead. They knew to go long by foot when ever they won it back. That;s superior coaching.
Bit of both I reckon. It's a territory battle on nights like tonight so the quick kick to an open forward line is very effective, even if it is a hack kick.
Bevo got schooled a bit tonight I reckon.

So you say we go in with one ruck and Dunkley/Bont as second rucks and have no talls in the forward line. Sorry I can't agree.
What exactly is wrong with the 1 ruck/ relief ruck option? We win more than we lose with such a structure - worked for Richmond last year as well.
I agree with you on the forward structure. Having a big body down there for the bail out option is vital.

We had 90 more handpasses and 22 less kicks with 68 more disposals. This is our normal dry weather pattern of play but in these conditions an unmitigated disaster. Our inability to adjust proved fatal.

Ok looking at the big picture, we certainly have a go and are trying our hardest , we are still a failure into the forward line and I'm beginning to think it's the men of mayhem again, just get in there anyway possible, but the problem is we aren't picking out our forwards .
I have no doubt we are on track with our young kids and it will come sooner than later that we start to blow sides away.
I went to the West Coast and my god they were twice the size of us height and build wise.
We have young kids who are playing in the highest level in major positions and are just finding their feet, they are doing a great job and give them some slack .
I'm dissapointed the score ended up like it did but I don't think it reflects our endeavour in any way.
Just be patient.

Bevo said post match that the coaches had instructed the players to look to kick more and to alter the gamestyle to the conditions, and that the players just didn't follow this through. That is probably even more worrying.
It was our better and more experienced players who failed to adapt - Macrae, Bont, Maclean, Dahlhaus, Wallis all had more handballs than kicks. I understad that these ar the guys in the clinches who probably need to handball most, but they were the ones that needed to modify their play the most.

Our stoppage work was frustrating. Whenever there was one in Crows forward 50 there were dangerous loose men waiting outside. Including one Eddie Betts. In our 50 everyone was caught inside the scrum or at bottom of packs.

We seemed to employ and antispread tactic, whereby if we won the ball midfield or forward, we charged towards the ball carrier rather than away to try to create space. Interesting tactic - won't catch on.

We just play dumb football. That's all there is too it. I'm not going to any more games until we start to take things seriously.
The kicking is fixable and always has been, we just need to take it seriously and fix it. The game plan is fixable we just have to stop stupidly insulting that what we are doing is correct.
These players can play well, (better anyway) but we have to let them.

We were also pressured very well by Adelaide which forced us to handball alot.

Yeah but that's a given in those conditions. We put as much pressure on them, but they kicked more and got the ball into space more easily.

I think we had more tackles and inside 50s. So the tackling pressure and getting forward were there but our application in wet weather needs addressing.

The umpires fail to give frees for incorrect disposal, holding the ball but love to pay the technical ones when an arm brushes over someone.
Agree. Another example is the jumper hold even though the player is not being impeded. Just throw you're arm in the air and you get a free kick!

Certainly need a few clarifications on some decisions that have been made. The free to Webb was there despite the criticisms. They paid a few similar ones like that against us too.

They were still bitching and moaning about it on the radio this morning. Seedsman comes on and talks about how annoyed Talia is, gives a highly dubious account of what happened and gives the "everybody is a bit confused" line but fails to mention that Adelaide got a free kick for exactly the same thing. They appear to have understood the one they got. No problems there.

Another whinging club about frees. Remember the coach whinging and whining when the frees were skewed our way back in 2016 and he complained to the AFL. Get over it you won morons.

Yep. Look I don't mind it from Seedsman he has an agenda to run and he gets a direct benefit from it but for the media experts all to sit there and blithely accept it without one of them saying "you guys got one of those frees too though" I am interested to see if he had anything planned as a response.

Someone with credibility will read this thread and mention it... Maybe.
