This period we are going through is true character building. I'll be going to our games still this year supporting the Dogs hoping for something to change but no guarantees. I'm just so grateful we won in 2016 because had we not won we would be all even more dissapointed than we are now. Hang in there fellow woofers and Dogs fans.

Nah, this is worse. Two analogies, with plenty of mayo. One, we've dropped a pill that's given us the best high we could imagine. Savage come down. Normal feels low by comparison from now on. Need more. Two. The Premiership was like shagging a absolute glamour, thinking it might be a long term thing. Only to now have to trawl through Facebook to see her/him hanging out with your 17 mates and eventually shacking up with the one you hate the most. Leaving you to sit in the dark and watch the premiership DVD all alone.

But we're a resilient bunch. Life goes on, we'll be there and things will get better.

It's OK for you who doesn't walk the plank to most games only to see our butts get smashed. It's hard work.

I'm younger Doggies supporter who didn't experience the days when we played at WO so I just imagine how those who did experience feel and there were a lot who went out there watching us getting belted in the late 70s and early 80s but have always sticked with us so 2016 was just huge.

True character building.

We had some bloody awful players play for us back then. I'm sure some no hoper seconds players transferred from other clubs because they wanted to at least play one game and they knew we'd play them.

It's all so painful given how optimistic we were about it all in Oct 2016. Just once, a mini dynasty of at least top 4 finishes. Surely after waiting for so long to win one.

It's like a one night stand with a supermodel.

They're OK as long as they understand that it's only going to be one night.

I’m sick of character building. I have that much character I could outdo Hanna-Babera. I’ve supported this team since the early 70s. I will continue to support this team until I’m past my 70s. But Jesus they make it hard sometimes.

Fair enough we all have different views of the same thing and I respect your view. Personally, if we have 6 losses in a row or 6 bad years, I too would prefer we didn't but it changes my loyalty to this club not one iota. I was born in Kingsville, it is in the blood. Over here at the new Optus stadium there would be 30,000 front runners in the crowd every week, if getting arse kicked at 3/4 time they head for the buses and trains. Can't say that is at all true of the dogs people in my experience.

I remember the day I made my first 100 in cricket. Took me 10 years, I said to myself it’s tine to retire. At the prime age of my mid 20s

Next week made a duck.

Same same but different.

When the casino opened we went in on the first morning and I won $50 bucks playing blackjack at the old temporary casino. I haven't been back since, no way am I conceding the fact that I'm fifty in front of the casino. I've been to a few bulldog functions at Crown but haven't gone anywhere near the gaming rooms.

What a dim outlook.

This is a sunny day compared to the dark days the club has gone through in the past.

We won the flag 20 months ago, and are rolling out the youngest side in the league at the moment. This is a broken arm compared to days where we were missing a leg.

Most of the 80's were highly competitive - no less than 10 wins a season from 1983-1988 all inclusive. Just the start and the very end of the decade were woeful.

Damn straight. I remember waking up a lot of days when there was no guarantee that we'd still have a club at going to bed time.

How many stories did we hear about being merged, shipped off to Brisbane and finally merged with Fitzroy. Thank god we don't have that on our backs thanks to all the good work by PG and his board.

1996 opened with thrashings of 87 and around 131 points...I’ve seen seasons where we only won two games, and a year where we almost ceased to exist, and years where our finals performances made you wish we hadn’t even got there.

My character does not feel remotely stretched by our current plight.

I don’t want to go back to those days and I’m disappointed that we haven’t seemed able to build on 2016 when most of the signs (Chris Grant’s hindsight article notwithstanding) were that our young list could have continued to improve... but we do need to keep perspective. We should have jagged that win against Sydney, we could have snatched a memorable win against the Crows; our list ain’t in great shape; it’s hard to understand where the coaching group are taking us and I’d appreciate some clearer more sincere communication about that direction...but this is not Armageddon!

After the failure of Edgewater we badly need a home base or social club. I hope the club has something in mind to address that. Now if you want to meet characters of the club, catching up at a Bulldog Social club would be the ticket to buy.
I fondly remember going along to the selectors night and felt privileged to have met so many different fans of ours.

We must have come bloody close. There must be times that we don't know that we just missed no longer being a legal entity. PG must have a hell of a biography in him. But even then a lot of those blokes who ran the club in the '80s are gone now, Tony Capes, Ron Palmer, quite a few are gone without having told their stories.

Yep my character is a bit annoyed at our failure to control the narrative and a pretty ham fisted attempt to revise history but happy with the lack of existential threats.

It must be nearly ten years since the social club had a proper presence. It's something that we could have done with on Grand Final night I thought. Somewhere at Whitten Oval would be best. Sitting in that room they had Selector's Table in with the view of the city and the rest of Melbourne there weren't many better views than that.

The Bulldog tragician wrote a good book on the events of that Fightback and merger so that we can remember never to be in that position again.

What was the reason again why Edgewater didn't eventuate?

Not related Easty. Edgewater was going to be a home base for us. It would be somewhat of a final piece for the club to have a proper social club in the West to call home.

Essendon have not won a final since 2004. Carlton hasn’t won a Premiership since 1995. We won the Premiership less than two years ago. When I was growing up in the 80s and 90s if you would have told me that we would win a Premiership and the Bombers and Blues would linger near the bottom of the ladder for ~two decades and be engulfed by scandals .... I would have never ever believed you!!!!!!!

Sometimes you need to be grateful for what you have.

A lot of morbid talk surrrounding the Dogs. Yeah, they might have taken a dive, and have been poor, but if you’re going to freefall, do it from Everest. Beats the hell out of continually tripping up at base camp ...

I trust we're putting as much effort into remedying the rot than explaining it away.

Me too. I just watched the Elimination Final again. We monstered the Cokes in that game. They had no answers to our INTENSITY. We have lost that manic attack, spread and run. Fitness plays a huge part in that.

What a great game beating them over there and they were in form. That was the start of a special month.

Went to both our 16 MCG finals (Semi and GF) both great (beating that arrogant brown and gold mob and the Swans in the big one and watching us with the cup in my memory forever now).

The best ever game I have watched from home was the Prelim final.

I did it all GF week (twice going to Whitten Oval, GF parade and the Grand Final) - hopefully will get there again soon.

It is tough now but still a very proud Bulldog here.

I'm so glad that I got to share that magic month with my dad, my son and my bestest footy mate (best mate full stop really. I don't know why I'm limiting it to footy). Dad died in May 2017 so tgat made it all the more special.

That makes me happy that your Dad got to see us win and also Harvey Stevens saw us win as well. I'm the only Doggies supporter in my family but I remember prelim final night when we won they were just all so happy for me Mum, Dad and my brother.
