Recovery;
Williams
Boumann
Guido
Wight(on and off)
Grant lead and marked well-set shot kicking could do with some work
Street at full forward on Doogs-kicked one.
Harbrow kicked the goal of the season but stepped over the boundary and it didnt count
West knocked up getting touches in the guts
Shaggy played as a genuine wingman
Aker has a talent for losing his opponent(or maybe our guys arent that good at tagging) and used the ball brilliantly
Addison got his hands on it a lot
Cooney's kicking to position was faultless
We seem to be holding on to the ball in defense waiting for players to run forward of the ball carrier and then playing on the burst with a quick runner bouncing it or a good kick to kick long to a target in the forward line.
I wasnt there for long but I'll try and answer any questions

some good points of interest there.
shaggy and addison in particular.
I think now that we have a few more options in defence,
ie doogs, williams. Someone like shaggy may find himself on the outer as he doesn't always match up particularly well. He has shown a talent for drifting down the ground kicking goals outside 50, maybe a role on the wing is an option for him.
Addison getting his hands on the ball is very promising.
My one big gripe on him so far is that he can't find the pill.
If that changes he will be a very handy player.

How did ruck contests go?
Who stood up in defence?
Was Grant match up on Everitt?

Shaggy is one of the most underrated players on our list IMO. He's quick, has a good tank, uses the ball well, is clever and courageous. Its up to Eade and match committee to find a productive role for him.
Twodogs - I'd be interested to hear how Ray and Higgins are tracking in terms of the positions they are playing and how they look physically
Are those comments on Addisons pre-season so far Cyber or based in the past two years VFL etc?

For me it hasn't been that he can't find it, but he wastes it when he uses it.
But I suppose by getting more possessions means a bigger chance of more quality possessions.

How is the Minson @ FF project going?
Who seems to be playing the CHF role?
How is young Ward going? And the 202cm rookie who's name escapes me?

You would also find that pretty much every week in the second half of the season he contributed atleast a goal a game, often on the run from 50/45.

I'd like to read a training report where Williams is NOT in rehab. He's not going to learn how to be a KPP riding a bike on the side of the oval.......

ps - thanks for the report TwoDogs. Cooney and Aker sound like they are shaping up nicely for 2008.

Seconded. It appears as though he's spent basically the entire pre-season in the rehab group. Certainly not what he & we want nor need. Surely it must be a little more serious than first alerted to?

I must admit i too am a little concerned about this. We really need TOMMY to step up this year and be an important part of the back 6.

Back before christmas im sure it was reported on BF he was seen clutching his hammy. He should have been back, going by my knowledge by mid to late Jan. Unless he tore it.
Barry, get to the bottom of this!

Minson is not so much a full forward as a presence in the forward line. He seems to be running around getting involved in contests-his handballing is quite good under pressure-and making sure the ball stays in the forward 50. I'd like him to apply more physical pressure in terms of tackling but he's got a bad habit of bumping rather than trying to hold blokes in a tackle.
Murphy and Gilbee have been CHF and CHB on each other at the few sessions I've seen. It's terrific viewing and Murph's back to the acrobatic player he used to be.
Havent seen Ward to my knowledge-I'm sure he's been there. I'm not real sure what he looks like and there's more new faces than usual this year.

Hudson dominates the ruck contests. Monsters whoever is the other ruckman time after time. Streeta is massive and picked the ball up on the run and tok a bounce. Havent seen him get a tap yet though.
Funnily enough apart from the usual suspects-Morris, Gilbee, Lake, the bloke who has impressed me with a cool head in defence has been Scott Welsh. He gets a bit ambitious with his kicking sometimes and got a bake last week for not following a team rule but he's fitted into the backline nicely.
Cant remember seeing Everitt today but whoever was on Grant got led to the ball a few times.

Why would he be played back? Surely we didn't recruit him for that.

Great report TD.
Just a few points to note;
* Grant continually impresses. Appears as though he's a great mark & a nice lead. Hopefully his kicking improves but he sounds promissing. How is Grant when the ball hits the ground?
* Welsh has been played down back in the few matches. I wonder why? Is it just giving Minson, Grant etc. more time to learn as playing as a KPF, is Eade testing Welsh's versatility incase we ever need it, or is Eade considering Welsh as a possible CHB whilst Williams continues to learn, and Wight trialed as a CHF? Perhaps he's even 'releasing' Hargrave to a wing? I'd be interested to know.
* Cooney & Aker from all reports are on fire. Great to hear. These two are genuine match winners and if they have big seasons, The Dogs will be barking!

Wouldn't he be better protected forward where he can move at whatever pace he likes?

He probably can run straighter lines in defence if it's something like a hamstring tightness they are trying to work through.

Hard to tell. The way they ping the ball around in match practice if a player misses a mark or possy the ball tends to rebound a fair way and the runners swoop on it. He does lead his opponent to the ball almost every contest if that's any help.

He's a lot broader across the shoulders, but again, he's spent a fair bit of time in defence learning how to spoil and punch the ball.

Thanks for the report, interesting comment about the game plan, it seems as though we're still interested in really running hard going forward, but perhaps refining the way we do it, and by taking a bit more time allowing for more options.
Everyone will need to be pretty fit, as it will be a pretty demanding game style.

based on his 2 years of football with us.
He's got all the right attributes, can run in straight lines, seems to be a tough nut, can tackle, has a long kick and reasonable skills. But the one big thing is he can't really impose himself on a game. He played 1 decent game for werribee against a week tasmania side with jack riewoldt in the side a couple of seasons back but hasn't matched that level since.
He needs to get 15 kicks a game, he'd be lucky to get half that last year.

A lot of the midfield group spent a lot of time in rehab last year. I honestly didnt think Cooney was a chance to play the first half of the season a week from the first game. Hahn, Higgins, Eagleton and Ray all had limited preperations. It's been the exact oppsosite this year all the running players have plenty of Ks in their legs and have played plenty of match simulation.
They all look up and running, Griff is bigger, I assume the bloke who always picks himself up from the bottom of packs is Cross if he isnt a blonde(then it must be Westy) and they get plenty of it, Cooney and Akermanis have been sensational, Hahn is relishing playing after only running last pre season, Higgins looks cut and is just cruising up and down the wing picking up touches, the brothers, apart from Hill (I think who has spent a bit of time in rehab), all look like they belong in the team and are improving every session, Eagleton has eased himself in gradually and is vital with his kicking, Ray looks stronger.
Aker and Cooney have been the standouts though.

I can't recall whether it was Noel or Eddie I spoke to on Friday (one of the trainers anyway) who said we've done alot of hill running this pre season. We didn't do any last pre season.

Yes, I think the fact that we have done a lot more distance running will probably hold us in good stead. The match-simulated running program of last year, combined with quite a few missing pre-season obviously held our fitness back from where it needed to be.
Hill sprints have to be just about the worse, along with stair running and wall squats.

Hill climbs are the hardest fitness orientated thing ive ever had to do. That hill in Brimbank Park is one of the worse. Its fairly short, about 200m id say but atleast 40 degree in most parts. Bloody rewarding at the end though.

How do you go to the sessions when they say there closed to the public? Do you just go in the gate(near the train station) cause i always see that open when im driving to and from work.

Depending if you are lucky you can force your way in but it is a building site so it will be stopped if it gets out of hand.

Fair enough Cyber but I dont fully agree with you.
I thought in his first year in the VFL he started the season superbly on a wing before injuries hit the senior Bulldog side and the depth in the VFL team was limited, and the midfield lacked dynamic runners apart from him, which basically meant he was getting tagged every week. The same thing happened to Higgins of course who was basically tagged from his very first game of VFL footy.
Last year he just didn't seem to get any continuity with his fitness. When he's played in the senior team he's never really been given a role where he could get that many kicks.
I think he can get it enough its just a question of the role he is given and whether his disposal can really hurt a team.

I find Welsh playing across half back an intereting proposition. It hadn't occured to me before but he actually has all the attributes to be a really good attacking defender. He is a very good reader of the game and a fine athlete. It certainly gives him some nice verstility.
Any report on Cam Wight playing CHF or has he mainly played in defence?
