They’re both ground breaking areas to focus on.
Who would’ve thought.

Who knows, at this rate we might go right out on a limb and focus on performance and rehabilitation.

Hopefully the other Clubs don’t catch on.

Old hands have pups pumped (http://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2018-11-09/old-hands-have-pups-pumped)

The early return to pre-season training of Liam Picken and Tom Liberatore has the Western Bulldogs' crop of exciting young talent inspired, key defender Aaron Naughton says.

The crucial playmaking pair has been notable on the track this week, returning with the first-to-fourth-year players despite not being required on duty until November 19.

Picken failed to play a senior game this season after suffering a heavy concussion in the JLT Community Series in March, while Liberatore ruptured his ACL for the second time in round one of the season proper.

Speaking after training on Friday, Naughton said he and his fellow youngsters were buoyed by having such respected teammates on the track so early into their 2019 preparations.

"Picko and Libba are good characters and bring a lot of energy to the group, so it's really good to have some leadership around us young boys," Naughton told AFL.com.au.

"They seem like quiet blokes, but in the inner sanctum they're quite vocal.
"They both pretty much missed the whole of last season, so to have them back for week one of training is very exciting for us.

"They're both really good players and been around the club for so long. Hopefully I get the opportunity to play alongside them more often, because they bring so much to the team."

Picken, who did some training throughout the year during his recovery from his head knock, looked sharp on the track, while Liberatore showed no signs of his injury as he completed a series of ball and goal-kicking drills.

Fifth-year players Toby McLean, Zaine Cordy, Caleb Daniel and Roarke Smith were not required back at the Club until later in the month, but have also been training strongly.

I think he is close to it. He still looks a bit lean but given his speed and athleticism should be his strengths he probably should stay on the leaner side. We've got some good sized younger key position players coming through with Boyd, English, Naughton, Schache and Lewis.

And Cordy! That's a yellow card if I was the actual host and/or moderator.

If these guys reach their potential together, it will be a terrific spine. I had to actually do a double take to realise it was Young, it looks like something close to the body shape he needs to play at to keep that good closing speed of his as you say. Naughton looks like he can take two gorilla forwards at a time from his photos this week. Young also looks to have had plastic surgery to look like Tony Martin impersonating Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I've tried but Gary has made it almost impossible to give him a yellow card-and he's earned it with his criticism of (the great) Zaine.;) We don't have a red/yellow card system for a start. That makes it really difficult.

No idea actually , Bevo never picked him all year from memory , although I didn’t notice him in the best a lot at VFL level.
Personally I’m a little disappointed he didn’t get in because he seems to read the ball well and Is very athletic, considering how bad we were in some games I would have thought he would have got a game at times.

One VFL watcher commented to me that they seemed to be really educating Lewis to defend with an emphasis on spoiling the ball. He also was used as a swingman, playing forward at significant times.

Maybe it was decided that Lewis needed to just learn some facets of the game before greater exposure in an undermanned backline.

He actually played 2 games this year, against Gold Coast and Lions. He was out muscled and looked out of confidence, cost us few goals from memory. I believe Bevo thought to just leave him in the VFL to get his confidence back.

The other fact is that Naughton and Cordy are in front of him. As was Adams when he was fit too.

Fingers crossed he gets his mojo back, as he showed some great qualities in 2017.

Most marks of a kpp on debut since Chris Grant. The kid needed some experience and frame building. He’s got that now, arguably his main competitor for interceptor KPP was Adams who got his wish to be anywhere other than here. So stars maybe aligning for Young.

You don't think JJ owes a little back to the club and his teammates? I think he's getting paid outside of the pay scale he deserves and he held the club over a barrel to get it.

I don't mind paying blokes big money but they have to be earning it with performance and if the performance isn't there (as it hasn't been with JJ over the last two years) then they should be pulling out all the stops to ensure they are getting back to the level that sees him as one of our best renumerated players. It's a simple equation, if you are one of the best payed players then you should be one of the best performed too and JJ is a long way short of being that.

I am not sure a photo at a music festival (taken while he is still on leave) is any type of sign that he is or isn't pulling out all the stops.

Away from the camera he may be hitting the gym hard for all we know and he may well be in excellent shape. Some players may choose to come back early, others may do extra in an exotic location/somewhere away from the usual daily grind of the footy club (such as Bont and Dunkley in NY).

WESTERN BULLDOGS
THERE were plenty of smiles at Whitten Oval when Liam Picken returned to pre-season training more than a week ahead of schedule. Picken – a 2016 premiership player – missed the 2018 season after suffering a heavy concussion during a pre-season match in March but is understood to be recovering well and is determined to return to the football field. Midfielder Tom Liberatore also hit the track early, having missed all of the year after rupturing his ACL in Round 1.

RECRUIT Sam Lloyd plans to play predominantly in his natural position next season – forward. Lloyd, who crossed from Richmond during the trade period, had been morphed into a midfielder at the Tigers, playing a lot of VFL football there over the past two years. But Lloyd admits he is a “forward at heart” and should return there. He kicked 35 goals from 22 games for Richmond in 2016.

KEY forward Josh Schache is determined to make his mark in 2019 as he enters his fourth season of AFL football. The 21-year-old took a short break to America over his break before beginning his own training schedule in his hometown of Seymour, including hitting the local pool four times a week along with gym work and running. The No.2 draft pick in 2015, Schache has said he is determined to earn respect during pre-season and in 2019 after showing some positive signs during 2018, kicking 17 goals from 13 games.

Draft picks: 7, 27, 32, 45, 63, 75, 82

He did the extra pre-season training before he joined us too. It sounds like he wants to try to build a Nick Riewoldt type of running power in time. He already covers a lot of ground with good field and goal kicking skills. To think he's only 21. So much talent to unlock.

I like Schache and think he has a bright future so long as he continues to apply himself. Showed some nice signs last year and with a bigger tank/stronger body and more exposure, he'll only improve. Worth noting he's been involved in some poor sides too, so as we mature as a side, that should help.

I do think Schache would enjoy a foil such as a fit/firing Tom Boyd or somebody like a Max King.

I think he's a professional athlete whose management negotiated the best deal they could while his employer chose to remunerate him for what they see as his worth. I think he owes it to his employer to perform his job to the best of his ability.

If part of his contract doesn't stipulate that he has to start at X time, then I don't blame him for that. If he chose to start earlier than the agreed time, I would tip my hat to him. I certainly wouldn't be giving my employer my free time for nothing.

I guess I don't really have the romantic notion of "owing" clubs. If the club feels like he "owes" them, then I imagine that would be stipulated in his contract. I don't know what else you'd want me to say.

Also, I realise that Rocket was being light hearted and that probably didn't come off in my reply.

C.Daniel and JJ, both had offseason surgery, both back running, expected to train fully after Christmas/New year break
Bailey Dale, did rehab over break on stress fracture, doing some running now, about a month away from joining in
Gowers fractured wrist, plenty of running, training fully in around a month (just before break)
Webb, still has neck brace, light running, will have scans in 8 weeks and plan made after that (long way away)
Picken, lots of running, still getting mild headaches, no contact allowed until given green light by specialist.

It's a bit of a tricky one Smads. I've normally just gone and entered the ground from the Café but I believe on occasions we have enforced a closed session. The club needs to do a bit better job of letting the fans know which sessions are open

If other club's spies really want to see training they just have to climb and watch from Scotchman's Hill. They can even see what's happening from parts of Gordon st. I don't see why they have closed sessions, I think we lose just as much as we gain.

Anyway as part of the rebuilding the ground was proclaimed a public park (the club wasn't even supposed to build a fence around it) so if you really wanted to stand up for yourself and insist on entry I can't see how they can stop you.

It’s hard to say this without being completely disparaging to his character and effort, but I don’t want Jong anywhere near our best 22. We need players who can think their way through situations and use the ball better than we have demonstrated recently and he isn’t able to do that for mine.

Our game needs to move on from what worked in 2016, I don’t think he has capacity to do that beyond being a depth player should preferred options go down.

That's OK. After he won his seventh B & F Scott West said words to the effect of "if wins next year's B&F that's not a good thing. We have to be bringing up players who put pressure on the blokes who are best 22 and also put pressure on the best players in the team. I don't want any more Sutton medals. I want to play finals and win a flag and we aren't going to do that with the same faces"

Got to the open training session this afternoon (left work early).

Probably not a lot to report on with players performing fairly simple drills with 'expected' team mates, but some observations:

1. didn't see Boyd, Libba, Picken, Lloyd, Suckling, Naughton, Morris, Lynch, or Duyrea on track (they were in the Monday training video)
2. I noticed Cavarra and Daniel on sidelines
3. No sign of JJ, Webb, Gowers or Dale (recovering from injury and therefore inside Elite Learning centre) or B Smith(?)
4. seemed to be 4 unknown players training. I had binoculars, and recognise most players, so these 4 didn't register. Possibly future f/s(?) having a run
5. Trengove and English seemed to be first ruck options (noting Boyd wasn't on the ground), with Schache teaming up with Sweet in a separate training drill.
6. B Williams trained with midfield group
7. an odd grouping was Lewis Young, Greene, Lipinski and Richards training together....does this suggest a fwd move for Young?
8. new recruits seemed to mostly train as a group with a couple of senior players amongst them e.g. Wood. Sweet, Hayes and West however worked with the other senior players on some ball up situations
9. Bont looked in great nick as did Crozier, Dunkley, Wood and Roberts
10. hard to get a feel for the newbies, Hayes and West clearly the most confident pair

I sat out on the outer wing, so didn't see everything going on, so happy to be corrected an any of the points above. I also note there is a Social Club function at Marvel Stadium this evening, so maybe some of the players not on the field were suiting up for tonight.

Suckling return on track

Western Bulldogs defender Matt Suckling is pain free and looking forward to attacking the pre-season at full speed by Christmas.
Achilles soreness kept the experienced defender on the sidelines for the second half of the 2018 season, but a solid rehabilitation program has put him in a strong position to be ready for next year.
"I've had some problems with the Achilles before, but it's just down to calf strength issues and playing a wet game against Adelaide (last year) … it just flared up, and then I tried to play on and couldn't," Suckling said.

"I've spent a lot of time putting strength into my calves and I'm pain free at the moment, so running around and building up to be flat out by Christmas.”
Suckling was in arguably career-best form before his injury last season, where he averaged 24 disposals and six marks per game, and booted five goals, in the first 11 rounds.

He was on track for a top-five finish in the Charles Sutton Medal, amassing 63 votes in the first half of the campaign.
Suckling has played 50 games over three seasons for the Bulldogs since crossing from Hawthorn at the end of 2015, and signed a one-year contract extension for the 2019 season.

I went to an event where Bevo & Moz were talking in 2015. Bevo & Moz said it'd be great to get 3 more years out of his body (16, 17 & 18). If he can stay fit and in the side, they might be saying the same thing again. He just never takes a short cut on anything on field, training or off field. Surprising he hasn't spent a lot more time in leadership groups come to think of it.

If I asked you who came 2nd in Hawthorn's top 4 (before finals) finish in 2018 I would think unless you know, you would have 20 guesses before saying Blake Hardwick.

Point being B&F finishes are only relevant to club supporters and footy nerds/ people paid to be footy nerds.

I still see Libba as the most interesting. Who knows what the photographers will see when he takes off his training top. I'm going with a full back tatt of the Womack & Womack female singers and the lyrics to 'teardrops' underneath. You just can't tell, it could easily be the smoking camel sharing a smoke with the Marlboro Man. Or a full back tatt of Stringer with a tatt of a Wookie across his chest just like Steve O. God it's a thread of guesswork this topic. Interesting man. Interesting what his brother is like.

Someone posted an analysis of the last 4-6 weeks of the season when Dunkley went into the middle. Bonti's % of contested possessions dropped from 50% to 33%, his total possession count went up and his metres gained was much higher. Dunkley basically allows Bonti to do what he does best and we're a much better side for it.
I'm wondering if Libba is now second rotation with Dunkley there. Libba is the better player but Dunks' impact on the midfield structure may be greater, not to mention he seems to know how to find the contested ball himself now after spending those weeks in the middle of the year as a run-with player.

Wallis' set shot range is about 30m and his delivery inside 50 is poor, both of which are weird outliers in his overall skill set - his craft is good but he can't be relied upon as a full time forward. I'd prefer Dunkley, whose issues have a better chance of being addressed.

It's a tough one. We could well start Bont forward which would mean Macrae, Libba, McLean start with a quick rotation to Dunkely, Bont, Bailey Smith straight after - Smith gets protected by two huge bodies and Bont/Dunkley get paired.

From memory McLean attended the third most centre bounces for us last year, he's really highly rated internally.

Is it worth missing what Bont brings to the midfield so we can play him permently at centre half forward? Bont is close to the best mid in the game at the moment but we have more players that can play in the midfield and not so many that can play forward.

We've really had a constant generational shift in wishing we had two of a certain type of player.

For years it was Grant - one forward, one back.
Then Johnno - one on the wing, one forward
Then Murphy - one back, one forward
Now it's the Bont - one mid, one forward.

He is rated highly by many external parties too, he was putting together a really good season until he got poleaxed against Port (??) and wasn't the same player afterwards... needs to tidy up a few things (more care with his kicking), but he's developing into a really nice player.

I'd actually like to see him rotate forward a little more. He did spend significant time forward for us when drafted and does have attacking instincts. I really hope he doesn't lose that be begin forced to grind out his time in the midfield. Hopefully with Dunkley and Libba back he spends a little more time outside the contest too.

Yep, a good size and looks to attack it well from that photo. He turns 20 in just over two months, so if the skill is right, he might have the body to play sooner rather than later.

Ahh thats right he was an overage player this year. Agree looks promising.

That's correct as per the original Facebook post from the club.

Looks like all the rain washed JJ's hair dye out.

That's the best he has looked in ages.

I have big quads and even I'm wondering how his haven't exploded yet.

Wood is an athletic freak though, state level high jumper at 185cm. On top of incredible work ethic he's been blessed with freakishly good genetics.

I recall Rocket Eade once saying that Wood had the biggest thighs he had ever seen on any individual.

Just some quick observations from the trek to WO this morning for Family Fun Day to watch the men's training only:

Players trained on the ground for about an hour
Not involved in any training: Dale, Libba, Suckling, B Smith
Running laps only: Bonti, Duyrea, Webb, Naughton
Didn't see Tom Boyd and don't think I noticed Cordy (could be wrong on this latter player however...)
Rest of players out on track including Picken and Gowers.
Last drill had players running and then being asked to shoot on goal before repeating the process four times - i guess it was about goal kicking under fatigue. It was interesting how they had the running groups set up...might have been an indication on who still needs to build their running capacity/tank. Buku clearly has no tank as he really seemed to struggle keeping up with his group in this drill.
Got to see kicking actions of Lloyd, West, Cavarra, Vandermeer and Young - they seemed ok in the drills, but there was no real pressure being applied.
Anyone else see something of note?

Thanks Smads57. Yeah I wish I could add something but came after the training session when they were doing the speeches.

I loved in the GF when Wood used those thighs to great effect firstly with his solid bump on Kieran Jack to set the scene for the day, and then secondly when he took out Hannerbury. He was like smashing into a tree stump.

He's looking in great nick so hopefully we see the return of 2015-16 Easton Wood in 2019.

'Game of Thrones' themed player draft hits Dog beach (http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-12-17/game-of-thrones-themed-player-draft-hits-dog-beach)

A 'GAME of Thrones' themed pre-season player draft is driving the Western Bulldogs' endeavours to return to finals football.

Descending on Torquay on Monday for day one of a four-day training camp, the Dogs completed a series of beach activities, aimed at building fitness and team morale.

Split into four teams, defender Matt Suckling revealed the popular TV program – based on four families – had provided the catalyst for the summer's activities.

"We do it most pre-seasons, we've got four captains, had a draft and picked teams," Suckling said.

"It was Game of Thrones themed (this year) and it was picking characters out of Game of Thrones as different players."

"All events go towards points and the end of pre-season, usually (we) have a winner and some prizes. It boosts morale, you get to hang out with guys you might not hang as much with.

"It's always nice to get away from the club and do something different."

After a tiring session at Whitten Oval on Monday morning, the Dogs were put through drills such as a digging treasure hunt, relay races and the popular tug-of-war – drawn up by assistant Ash Hansen.

The group containing captain Easton Wood, Liam Picken, Mitch Wallis, Dale Morris, Patrick Lipinski, Josh Schache and Ed Richards claimed a come-from-behind victory in the tug-of-war.

Picken completed the entire session, able to take part in all non-contact work as he continues to recover from an entire 2018 season missed with concussion symptoms.

Midfielder Lukas Webb was on hand for parts of the afternoon, still sporting a neck brace that he hopes to have removed around March following an injury sustained in the VFL in July.

Suckling, in the midst of his 13th pre-season, has only just returned to full running after a delayed start to the summer due to missing the back half of 2018 with Achilles soreness.

While he said there was a fantastic "vibe" around the group as they look to play finals for the first time since the 2016 premiership, Suckling said he was also enjoying the company of a dual premiership teammate.

Arriving during the NAB AFL Trade Period, Taylor Duryea looks poised for a role alongside Suckling in defence – the pair re-uniting under their former Hawthorn assistant coach Luke Beveridge.

"It's nice to have a familiar face around, he drove me down here today and we're rooming together, so we've been hard to separate at the moment," he said.

"He's fitting in really well at the moment and looks good.

"He's a really versatile player and I think 'Bevo' (Beveridge) really likes that, guys that can play multiple roles.

"He's a hard-bodied guy that can play down back, or we've seen him play forward and kick goals as well.

"He's probably training more down back at the moment but can play anywhere."

Suckling highlighted NAB AFL Rookie Draft pick Lachie Young as the player to have stood out most to date – with No.7 national draft pick Bailey Smith showing up a few of his older teammates.

"He's come straight in and has got the best rig at the club already so that's one for him. A few guys like myself don't have the shirt off around him," Suckling said.

After Thursday, the Dogs will head off on their three-week break over Christmas, as stipulated by the AFLPA, before the club embarks on a pre-season training camp in Queensland in January.

As for Suckling, the new year brings in wedding season, with the defender off to celebrate the nuptials of current teammate Mitch Wallis and also attend the marriage of former teammate Isaac Smith.

Looks leaner at the same time too. Maybe there’s a new style to his play in 2019?
