Match preview: Western Bulldogs v Geelong
Paul Bastin
Jul 2, 2019 12:10PM

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Saturday July 6, 7:25pm AEST

TV, radio and online: Click here for broadcast guide

What it means for the Western Bulldogs: The Bulldogs continue to hang around the finals conversation through a 6-8 win-loss record, but there is no margin for error. They face first-placed Geelong on the back of a strong fortnight.

What it means for Geelong: Maintain breathing space at the top. The Cats have a two-game gap ahead of last season's Grand Finalists Collingwood and West Coast, and could be a couple of wins from being able to manage their run home without ladder pressure.

The stat: Geelong's dominance over the Western Bulldogs stretches back more than a decade, winning 16 of the past 18 games, including two finals.

The match-up: Josh Schache v Harry Taylor

An in-form Schache (ranked 463rd in the Official AFL Player Ratings) has returned to the Western Bulldogs senior side with gusto in the past fortnight, kicking six goals. The 21-year-old is likely to face experienced Geelong defender Harry Taylor (211th), a man who has rarely been beaten in a 251-game career.

It’s a big week for: Aaron Naughton

The Bulldogs forward hasn't kicked a goal in the past two games and no more than one in a game since round eight. It's a tough position to play for a developing 19-year-old, but Naughton needs to find a way to impact the scoreboard against the best defence in the competition.

Big call: Tom Hawkins kicks five-plus goals for the first time in 2019

Prediction: Geelong by 12 points

Eastdog

Margin: Dogs by 2 points

Our First Goal: Josh Schache

Our Best On Ground: The Bont!

Last time we played them, it was only a few goals in it right up to midway through the last, then they slammed on 4 or do goals and ran out big winners.

We need 4 quarter footy against this mob - I think they are gettable.

Absolutely BAD. For 3 quarters of that match we were right with them and just fell away in the end and I thought the 44 point margin wasn’t a reflection on the overall game.

While we still need to be weary on Saturday night I give us a big chance. We finally got them last year at Marvel then known as Etihad so hopefully we can win more comfortably this time. I tipped us by 2 points.

It's about time we beat this mob. I am so over them. I bracket their supporters alongside Essendon, Hawthorn, Carlton, West Coast, Adelaide and Collingwood supporters as the supporters I dislike the most. There are more out of shape Geelong male supporters wearing footy jumpers than any other club's. We owe them big time. I can only recall seeing five wins against them in 63 years. I'm sure there's been more but that's all I can re-call.
The first was last home-and-home game in 1961 when we had to win to get into the four. Ted Whitten was magnificent that day and kicked two 80 yard drop kick goals from the EJ Smith wing to the Barkly St end. The crowd was huge; the excitement immense.
I remember the Pieman booting 12 in a great performance in the 80s and I was at Kardinia Park in the 80s when Lally Bamblett kicked a marvellous running goal and we won comfortably.
The 4th was at Doglands a few years ago. It was very close. Gia dropped a garden variety chest mark near the wing, they got it and booted it inside 50 but Brian Lake saved the day (again) with yet another timely mark - this time DEEP in time on this paying homage to the true meaning of "timely".
And of course the most recent one was the 18 players plus orange boy on the mark v Harry Taylor who kicked it like a bloke who'd played 300 games in defence. Good one H.

Four things to watch: Dogs v Cats
Jul 5, 2019 12:33PM

1. Dunks v Danger?
The midfield battle is always critical, and both sides have plenty of star factor.
Patrick Dangerfield has overcome an injury worry to be named in the Cats’ line-up, and could we see him go head-to-head with Josh Dunkley?
Dunkley is emerging as a real weapon in the midfield for the Dogs.
He’s averaged more than 32 disposals and six tackles per game over the past eight weeks, and could be the man to match the Cats’ clearance king.

2. McLean’s return
Toby McLean is back.
The 2016 premiership player has forced his way back into the AFL side after missing the past two matches.
After being the carry-over AFL emergency in the first of those two weeks, McLean dominated at VFL level on the weekend.
He racked up 30 disposals and kicked two goals to be a clear best-on-ground, and can hopefully carry that form into Saturday night against the Cats.
McLean replaces the injured Caleb Daniel – and it will be intriguing to see who steps into Daniel’s ‘quarterback’ role off half-back too.

3. The record
It’s fair to say the Cats have largely had our measure in recent years.
The Cats have taken the points in 12 of our past 13 clashes, dating back to the 2009 elimination final.
However, there is one stat in our favour.
The last time we met under the Marvel Stadium roof? A two-point win for the Dogs.
And if we can build on the three-quarter performance at GMHBA Stadium earlier this year, then on our own turf we’ll be every chance against the ladder-leaders.

4. Stopping Tom Hawkins
Star Geelong forward Tom Hawkins had a big impact when we met earlier this year.
He snagged four goals – and found able sidekicks in Darcy Fort (three goals) and Gary Rohan (three goals), who both find themselves as emergencies this week.
Jackson Trengove has established himself in defence since then, after taking on the ruck role against the Cats in round nine.
Could he be the man to help limit the influence of Hawkins?
We’ll find out on Saturday night.

I think I've shown my bonafides over the years as a glass half empty kibda guy; and I'm frustrated too by our poor skills thus far tonight.
However, we're 9 points down against a Geelong side that has also but hered their dominance. Sound familiar?
Given their season thus far, its likely they'll course correct, but we're right in this at current state of play if we can fix some things at half time.
They're one down, and we've just got to find a way to prise this from their grip.
We need to get more from the source, and bloody take our chances.

He's a great player who would be in the best 2-3 players in the comp if he kicked the goals he should.... but he's comfortably inside the top 10.

On that I agree wholeheartedly! In review those kicking inside 50 should be excoriated for the way they've placed our key forwards at a distinct disadvantage.

Again a valid point. But what separates the Ok from the great, is at least the ability to halve a contest.
In a tight game, there have been a few chances where Schache should've taken possession and been tackled, and a ball up ensued. But his fumbliness on ground has allowed them to get out.
Yes, the bulk of blame has to go towards the bloke delivering the ball, but those few ground balls are important in the scheme of things
We are a generation away of the pure kick mark forward. He's got to be at least competent when the ball hits the deck.

I loved the response. It shows growth. The recent narrative has been to squander a match winning lead, and make it a nailbiter.
Instead, we responded.

Irrespective of where we end up 2019, I'd love to see every WOOFER get amongst wins like tonight.
Premierships, even for the "privileged AFEL' clubs, are a rarity. Let's own moments too. Their acknowledgement doesn't inhibit the long view.
I'm by no means an elder in years on this forum, but my following of the Dogs back to the late 70's tells me wins against Geelong are very, very valuable.
Let's all enjoy it together. Our enjoyment and savouring of it, doesn't in any way pre-judge or influence how the club respond from here on in.
This moment felt very good. It's okay to honour a moment, whilst still expecting more to come.

The cheer squad area for us was again half full. I don't understand why the Cheer Squad members just aren't attending games. It's great they buy tickets just disappointing they aren't there to cheer us on.

I am surprised by this.
Cheer squad is an integral part of things too.
I took my son to Melbourne last year to watch us just fall short against the Roos, and found them a very supportive and inclusive group.
They went out of their way to make my son's first game a memorable experience, and when I bring my family to watch us play Essendon I am hoping we can get into the cheer squad again to give my 4 yr old daughter a similar experience.

It's perplexing,

Encouraging to hear they are so accommodating though

Our vfl teams knock off top of the ladder Richmond and now we've sent the cats scuttling down the highway with their tails between their legs.

The Bulldog Battallion is coming...

When you put in a 4 quarter effort all the distractions about age of the players and the number of games experience etc means nothing.
We don't need excuses when we put in 4 quarter efforts and comparisons of games played aren't relevant

We out worked and dare I say out coached the top side and it's as good as it gets

Will be having a good conversation today I reckon down at the pub I go to regularly about the Dogs. One of the musicians who plays there every Sunday is a Dogs supporter.

Riley goes alright too!! I find myself thinking of “Great Scott” too when I see Riley play. Has footy smarts and competitive nature plus sublime handpasses just like his Dad. Truly a chip off the old block!!

Really proud of the lads today. That said in some ways the real challenge is in how we play the next month after winning these last 2 hard games. Vital we beat the 'easier' teams unlike in the first half of the year.

Bevo is a genius
He out coached scott tonight . With the list scott he has he looked clueless at times in the coach box . I wonder how Long the cats board will put up with these half season fade outs ?

Just watched the last quarter again, and as I've said previously this season there isn't a team in the competition that plays like us when we're OK, and there isn't a team that can claim to have it over us if we play well.

We're genuinely unique and hide the clear deficiencies we have in our structure when everyone sticks to their knitting. However, given our team balance or structure, age and experience we'll have our lapses and I think a lot of supporters need to understand that. We could have put another solid performance in tonight and lost against the top team and many around here would have gone completely ballistic and into meltdown. But, the difference between doing that and what we did tonight is really small, so next time it goes the other way some perspective might be required to keep this place a little more enjoyable.

Our defence tonight was excellent, it looked like we gave a few more free touches away between 65-100 metres away from goal in order to save some within 30. This actually helped us apply some pressure on the Cats when they got close to goal, which was a good thing.

Our midfield will be the best in the competition when at full complement, if it's not already. We're in this, we can beat anyone.

What a sweet, sweet victory. Such a coincidence that these good teams just happen to play badly against us

The boys really stood up last night, a real team effort.

Strong 4 quarter effort was the key to the win. We made way too many mistakes with skills and decision making but we out worked them in the last quarter when it counted.

I hope we are advancing our discussions with Bevo about a new contract.
I still think he needs to have a more footy focus and if that can be achieved I see no reasons why we wouldn't want to give him an extension now rather than wait until next season

Had to post this, Bailey Smith has that unteachable smart arse-ness that our players have seemingly lacked for so long. Naughton has it too. Giving it to Selwood, sign him up for life (granted I respect Selwood he's a great leader). Pic : Michael Wilson (twitter : @michaelcwilson)

I must say, I honestly thought we would get flogged by 7+ goals, and only managed to see the odd score before tuning in for the last 12 mins. What a mighty effort, and it looked like McLean had a blinder in the last, with most of the guys turning in a good team effort in the last. To keep them to 50 odd points for the game was a mighty effort by our defensive unit. Always good to see Geel head back down the highway with their tail between their legs. Even throwing our nemesis (Taylor) fwd, couldn’t get them the win. Well done dogs.

Bailey smith was everywhere tonight. , kids unbelievable.
I’ve got it worked out , we get Naughton to take a mark early and his confidence goes through the roof and bang!

Bailey is tracking better than Coons in his first year. His potential is mitigated by his precocious professionalism. I suspect his improvement will be more gradual less dramatic than Coons.

Man's not wrong. Down back is still an issue but we just kept the "best" team with the "best" forward line to 55 points in perfect conditions, so honestly who even knows anymore. The forward line looks grim on paper but it's more effective than it's been in ages and it's gonna have two guys clear 40 goals.

Our midfield is the best in the league and we still have one of our lead horses to come back into it. If we can protect Timmy from getting bodied too badly then we will beat everyone around the ball.

Also I really hope I said this somewhere on here at the time but the Cats' early-season form was rooted in total tin-arse unsustainable and unprecedented goal-kicking accuracy. Have serious doubts about them when the pressure is up if last night is any indicator.

The Dogs will get me evicted. I kept on shouting **** at the top of my lungs in the last quarter.

Dunno about the rest of you, but that rates up there as among our great wins over the last 20 years.

Just before he died my dad asked me to move in with my mum and just keep an eye on her. Anyway I'd been moved back for about a week or so when we lost that game to North last year with the last kick after Wallis missed the target and kicked it OOBOTF. I kicked a cushion laying on the ground and swore at the top of my voice. Said cushion may have hit the telly and dear old mum may have threatened to throw me out of the house!

Best thing about last night is that we still have so much room for improvement - we were awful for large parts of the first half and frankly lucky to be as close as we were. The entire 2nd half was a much improved effort - we got the rewards in the last qtr but our 3rd was just as impressive.

I've been critical of Bevo this season but since the bye he has finally settled the team down selection wise and also positionally, and we are so much better for it. Big challenges coming up in the next 3 weeks where we will be favourites - we haven't worn the label well recently.
