Roarke Smith? Gowers?
What irks is it doesn't appear Hayes had a specific lockdown job. Or is at least very crap at it.

I'm sure the influential thinkers in the media will be just as generous towards us as they were towards WCE after we knocked them off having gotten personnel back after the bye.
If we can get out of this with Naughton having suffered a lateral rather than something more drastic then we can hit the preseason with huge confidence after a hopefully fruitful trade period.
While it was clear our core midfielders didn't have the influence we may have liked, it was clear that we didn't get the physicality and support from those on the periphery to them and it appeared the Giants certainly got the former all game aside from a couple of brief moments.
That's where our improvement will come from.
Grantysghost

Bonti 13 touches. They worked him over well. Macrae 32 and 9 tackles just keeps going but overall the midfield was smashed.
jeemak
07-09-2019, 06:30 PM
There's no way we get smashed like that through the middle with both Libba and Wallis in the side, but, would each have been selected in the last few weeks or the finals if both available?
While the pressure of GWS was really good, we also had players decide to have a bit of a stinker, particularly with the football in hand. JJ and Duryea stick out on this front, so did Cordy at times who I thought was both reasonable and clearly struggling at during different phases of the game.
It's easy to look at the forwards and accuse them of being ineffective, which they largely were, but they just didn't get the opportunities to impact the game due to a lack of supply. That lack of supply is fairly and squarely on our midfield and defencive half movers. GWS were excellent at clogging up and being physical within the area between 35m to 80m away from their goals and we couldn't respond to it.
I don't care where we think we are settled for in terms of talent across the ground, today proved we need to keep bringing talent in. If Isaac Smith is available at the right price we take him, same with Josh Bruce or whoever could possibly make our list better and better suited to days like today (which each would have).
That doesn't mean avoid targeting Martin and Keath for instance, it just means that if someone is available and better than who you might have on your list then you get them if you can.

What a bad result. Apart from the first minute, a ten minute burst in the second and Richards' goal in the 3rd we were nowhere. I really felt failed completely to match their aggression. They started on Jack Macrae before the first bounce and we just let them get away with it - not good enough. Tim English was very good around the ground but seriously misjudged his leap at centre bounces and their midfield was gifted many clearances.
They were far too good. They ran harder, used the ball better and handled it cleaner. Good thing is a lot of young blokes got to play in a final.
Finally, there are times when kicking a goal is just SO important. Every time that moment arose we failed the test. There's a lesson there.

All week we knew they would "go the knuckle" - there was even a thread on here about it - and we still weren't prepared to get down and dirty and just disappeared meekly into the night. That was probably the most disappointing part of the loss was the way we rolled over. They bullied us and we just copped it. No one fought back, no one stuck up for their mates. Yes, we are young but that does not excuse us for not showing a bit. Guys like JJ, Wood, Suckling who have been around for awhile did not fly the flag they put up the white one. Makes you think how lucky we were having Clay, Dale Morris, Boydy, Biggsy and co who more than flew the flag when they had to. We stood tall then, no one wanted to play us.

Still glad I came up to Sydney to cheer the boys on. Nothing beats being at the game.
In the end GWS killed us in the midfield and that was the real reason we lost.
We seemed rusty, and lost momentum from the last round.
However, I must say the treatment of some of players was disgusting and should have been stopped by the umpires with a few free kicks and 50 metre penalties. They are a dirty bunch of filthy snipers.
The game it self was ruined by the wind and for the life of me why Wood chose to kick into the wind in the 1 st has me baffled.
We have a great bunch of kids and they can only get better.

Club has now posted confirmation there is no ACL damage. Just read the post on club's Facebook page.
Good news!
"Western Bulldogs forward Aaron Naughton has avoided damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
However, scans today confirmed some damage to his lateral ligament, after he landed awkwardly in the third quarter of the Bulldogs’ elimination final against the GWS Giants.
Naughton will consult with a specialist in the coming days to help determine his best course of management and rehabilitation plan."

Wood really tried to bring some stuff to the attention of the umpires, there was a point where the goal umpire got involved. He spoke to them again at qtr time, but it really felt like they just weren't interested. Very keen to blow the whistle but terrified of making a point. No doubt some of FreeKickBulldogs hysteria primes them against it. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
A few reversals and a 50m or two and the game gets cleaned up pretty quick.
