A Herald Sun update on preseason (link below for other clubs). I still haven't seen or heard anything about Bailey Smith. Hasn't appeared in any photos with the 1-4 year players. Is he injured?

WESTERN BULLDOGS
Senior players are not due back until next week although newlywed JOSH BRUCE and ALEX KEATH – the two big recruits – are set to make an early appearance on Monday. Keath has already been spotted completing his rehabilitation at Whitten Oval although the intercepting backman won’t be in full training until January, having undergone surgery on a stress fracture in his ankle that was diagnosed during his medical examination before trade period. Likewise, AARON NAUGHTON (knee) and TOM LIBERATORE (knee) won’t be in full training until after Christmas. MITCH WALLIS suffered a similar injury to Keath and will be on a modified program when his pre-season begins on November 25. LACHIE HUNTER enjoyed a kick with BAILEY DALE last week despite undergoing a post-season shoulder reconstruction. Hunter will be able to complete running and ball work but is unlikely to partake in any contact drills until January. WILL HAYES has stacked on 3kg of muscle while ruckman TIM ENGLISH was the star of this week’s circular beep test running. JACKSON TRENGOVE has also enjoyed a headstart on training.

He has family in the Western Suburbs so settling in won't be a problem.

Clever strategy.
With two players as parents, only 50 games from each should make the kids father/son eligible.

We should tell Sydney's recruiting department. They are insane enough to do it, even if it was just to spite the AFL Commission.

Major open training times for 2019-20 (https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/2019-11-29/major-open-training-times-for-201920)

The Western Bulldogs will host four major open training sessions for fans across 2019-20, starting with a Christmas open session next month.

These sessions will replace the traditional Family Day event.

They will be split across the pre-season and in-season, with the intention of having players more accessible to fans.

Christmas open training will be a joint AFL-AFLW session, from 8.30am to 9.30am on Saturday 14 December, with player signings from 9.30am.

A further pre-season session will be held in early February, on the eve of the AFL season, plus a morning session in May and a school holiday opportunity in June.

2019-2020 Open Training Sessions

* Saturday 14 December 2019 – Joint AFL & AFLW Training from 8:30am to 9:30am, with boundary line signing from 9:30am

*Saturday 8 February 2019 – AFL Training from 9am to 10am, with boundary line signing from 10am

*Tuesday 26 May – timings TBC

*Tuesday 30 June – AFL Training from 10am to 11am, with boundary line signing from 11am

*Note – player availability and dates/timings are subject to change

A long time ago strebla the whole WB team used to come out east each year to do a training session for fans. These days it's only really a few players who come out to do the kids clinic. Certainly would be great if they brought back the older format. I have been to the Whitten Oval now a number of times it is a great train ride to the ground very easy access from the station will need to next get the driving route down pat to the WO in the future but probably better coming by train to not worry about parking.

We've been pretty good at building up the draftees quickly. There is always going to be a Fergus Greene that seem to take a long time to fill out but I suspect Butler will be a lot stronger in just 12 months.

In just three years English, Lipinski and Lewis Young have all put on a lot of size and strength. Brad Lynch filled out quickly as well

I think the club does this better than most

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Established gun: Speedy backman Jason Johannisen's preparations for the 2019 season were derailed by injury but fast forward to the present and the defensive playmaker could hardly be in better shape leading into the Christmas break. Johannisen, who recently became a father, has thrived on an injury-free run and looks likely to break all land-speed records at Whitten Oval.

Gen next: Exciting ruck prospect Tim English will enter his fourth AFL season a more formidable physical presence after adding 5kgs in the off-season to hit the scales at 105kgs. Importantly, the big blonde has added bulk and strength without sacrificing any of the athleticism and endurance that is crucial to his game.

New faces: The training form of former St Kilda key forward Josh Bruce has been so eye-catching that he has Dogs diehards salivating at the prospect of his aerial combination with promising pair Aaron Naughton and Josh Schache. Started his campaign with the Bulldogs' youngsters and has already proven a strong target in match simulation. - Ben Collins

I went to the session this morning and it was good to see so many players looking in picture perfect condition

I talked to a guy who seems to be in the know and he mentioned that Naughton had added some more size and that Bailey Dale was also performing well

I shouldn't go to these sessions as the wait until next season just seems too far away

If we can get Schache, Naughton and Bruce clicking as key forwards we are going to be a handful for other sides

He's skill got that lean look about him but I do think he is bigger. His strengths are his pace off the mark and as that 3rd man up/interceptor and if we are going to continue to play him like that then on most occasions staying lean will be OK.
Hamling had that lean but strong look about him and if Young can play a bit like him then we will have a winner

He did have PCL surgery when he jarred his knee in the final. I'd imagine he'll be tracking well if he can put shear force through his knee, it will be lateral movement which is last to be introduced into his program.

Must be watched live. It's sensational. My introduction was at the 2000 Sydney Para Olympics.

It's played real hard, taking no prisoners, and real fast. Has the strange aspect of not only injuries to the players, but also to their wheelchairs, with emergency repairs by the mechanics. So you have medics and mechanics for each team...

Keath ramps up pre-season training (https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/554382/keath-ramps-up-pre-season-training)

Key defender Alex Keath has started to take part in match simulation at training as he ramps up his first pre-season as a Bulldog.

The former Crow underwent minor surgery on his lower leg during the off-season, and is tracking well in his recovery as he targets a return to full training by the end of January.

“At this stage it’s all going well – I had a 10-week scan which the surgeon was happy with, and have been progressing with my training loads,” Keath told RSN Breakfast Club on Friday morning.

“We have a pre-season camp coming up (on the Sunshine Coast) next week, and then some practice games which I’m hoping to be a part of.”

The 27-year-old was acquired during the last 30 minutes of the Telstra AFL Trade Period, arriving at the Kennel alongside key forward and former Saint Josh Bruce.

“’Brucey’ has been a great addition – he’s been dominating out on the training track,” Keath said.

“He’s able to play a number of positions on the ground too, so he’ll be a really good pick-up this year.”

The Bulldogs will spend their 2020 pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast, with an open training session to be held on January 26 at the Maroochydore Sports Complex from 9:30am.

Great pick ups and the type of players we wanted. They complement our already solid midfield. We need the consistency now from our team and if we can get that will be a tough team to beat for the opposition.

Bruce seems to have either fitted in quite well.... or our KPDs are terrible and Bruce is murdering them. St Kilda fans all think he'll do better in our system with better delivery into the F50.

We haven't seen a fit Keath take on Bruce as yet, it would be an interesting match up as Keath has made his name as a ball-reading interceptor rather than a stopper and Bruce is one of the best contested marks in the competition.

Sunshine Coast camp preview

2020 marks the sixth year running that the Bulldogs have headed to the region as part of their pre-season preparations.

As the AFL season gets nearer, the Western Bulldogs’ pre-season will heat up – literally – with an intensive training camp on the Sunshine Coast.

It will mark the sixth year running that the Bulldogs have headed to the region as part of their preparations.

This year’s camp will again include an open training session for fans – on January 26 – before the team heads home on January 31.

The camp program is set to include a variety of training – including skills, match simulation and gym – alongside a number of team-based activities.

General Manager of Football, Chris Maple, said the camp has provided plenty of benefit over the years and expected the same for the group in 2020.

“The training environment and facilities are exceptional and provide a fantastic opportunity for our players to bond together while completing a high volume of football and conditioning training,” Maple said.

“It’s also a great chance to meet our Bulldogs fans in Queensland, and we hope to have a big turnout for our open training session on January 26.”

For midfielder-forward Toby McLean, the Sunshine Coast component has been a staple of his six pre-seasons as a Bulldog.

“It’s always a good time of year,” McLean said of the camp.

“It’s a nice 10 days to get away and bond a bit more with the boys in the heat.

“We’re always looking to improve every pre-season, always looking to get stronger and fitter.

“We’ve got a lot of boys out on the track and it’s a good, competitive environment out there at the moment.”

Talking to the facilities manager last year he said the whole surface is too hard and it needs a complete resurface after I complimented him on how the ground looks like a bowling green.
Pretty sure it hasn’t been done yet but he said it was going to be done at some stage, probably when the whole renovation takes place.
No doubt it will be straight after a season is over, with us pretty much having footy all year round I wonder if we will need another ground to Train on at some stage and which ground would we use ?
We used to use skinner reserve , maybe Williamstown or Werribee ?

I have heard that there is a problem with people spreading their ashes on the playing surface. Apparantly a few players were getting cuts and grazes that just shouldn't have been caused by simple grass burns. So they did a soil analysis and the problem was that when you burn a body not everything gets burned to ash and what was left of the heart pace makers were making the ground really harsh.

So now I am faced with the problem of sneaking in and placing my dad's ashes at the spot we agreed I would spread him. It's not on the playing surface and he didn't have a pacemaker so I don't feel guilty about it at all-I'd feel guiltier if I didn't do it after I promised him that I would.

Going head to head (https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/557162/white-beats-blue-in-match-sim-hit-out)

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EPLg5IVUUAAEY5o?format=jpg&name=900x900

Team White scored a four-point win over Team Blue as the Bulldogs were put through an intensive match simulation session on the Sunshine Coast today.

In hot, sweaty conditions on a slippery outfield due to morning rain, the two sides played four 20-minute quarters, with a number of players switching sides throughout the game.

Team White controlled proceedings in the first half, as players battled to get a handle on the slippery ball.

New skipper Marcus Bontempelli was arguably best afield, finding plenty of the ball for Team White against a Team Blue midfield led by fellow All Australian Jack Macrae.

Team White went into half-time leading by 24 points, 33 to nine.

Team Blue had Josh Bruce, Aaron Naughton and Josh Schache all inside forward 50, but they were well held early by a Team White defence which had Alex Keath, Zaine Cordy and Easton Wood guarding the talls, and Jason Johannisen, Hayden Crozier and Caleb Daniel providing plenty of rebound.

Rhylee West and Ben Cavarra were both in the thick of the action, kicking a goal apiece in the first half, while a Johannisen long range goal from outside 50 late in the second term was among the highlights.

After half-time, the match opened up and there was some slick ball movement.

Team Blue clicked into gear with four consecutive goals – Lachie Hunter launching from outside 50, before Roarke Smith bobbed up andNaughton came into the game with a big mark and a pair of goals.

Draftee Cody Weightman bobbed up with a goal for Team White late in the third term, before the impressive Lin Jong ran into an open goal on the stroke of three quarter time.

Schache found his range at the start of the final term, before Weightman equalised for Team White. Bailey Dale found another for the Blue side to reduce the margin to six points halfway through the final term, but neither side could split the big sticks from there.

Forty players took part in the match simulation session, as competition for spots ramps up with a fit list ahead of Round 1.

Naughton played three quarters before sitting out the last, while Keath featured throughout the whole game having returned to full training over the past fortnight.

TEAM WHITE 7.13 (55)
TEAM BLUE 7.9 (51)

Blue Goals: Naughton 2, Dale, Hunter, R. Smith, Schache, Dale
White Goals: Weightman 2, West, Cavarra, Johannisen, McLean, Jong

I stood next to him last year he is very big in the legs was more his arms and chest that weren’t built up.
But I guess it’s more about positioning and getting solid timing as you hit the opposition ruckman.

JJ firing on all cylinders

Influential defender Jason Johannisen's 2019 and 2020 preseasons couldn't be more contrasting.

Influential defender Jason Johannisen had a huge impact for the Western Bulldogs in 2019.

He finished fourth in the best and fairest – despite an almost non-existent pre-season due to injury, which also saw him miss the first three games of the year.

But 2020 – so far – has been a very different story.

“I didn’t do any pre-season last year, and I’m fortunate enough my body’s feeling really good this pre-season,” Johannisen told media on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

“I haven’t missed a training session.

“Hopefully that continues and I can keep building and start the season off really well.”

Johannisen was among the leading lights in Sunday’s four-quarter match simulation session, providing his trademark drive off half-back and slotting a goal on the run from outside 50.

“It was solid – we stepped it up to four quarters today,” he said.

“We had good numbers on the track so we gave it a real crack and the intensity out there was really good.

“Obviously there’s a lot more improvement to go, but it was a good standard.

“I think the boys will definitely feel it after this.”

Again, Marcus Bontempelli led from the front in match simulation according to Johannisen, as he cast his eye over the standout performers.

“I’d probably give Bont the three votes, I thought Hayden Crozier was really good in defence for the two, and Timmy English and Jack Macrae probably get one each,” he said.

Wrap: 2020 Sunshine Coast Training Camp
Take a look at what went down during our 2020 training camp on the Sunshine Coast

It was another successful trip to the Sunshine Coast for the Western Bulldogs, after completing an intensive 10 day training camp.

The side's trip to sunny Queensland had it all - gruelling training sessions in the heat, afternoons in the gym and team bonding activities in between.

westernbulldogs.com.au wrap up the Sunshine Coast training camp, as our attention now turns to North Melbourne in the first of two Marsh Community Series game.

There was very little time to settle in, as the players hit Maroochydore Multisports Complex on day one for a light session.

Since Bevo's arrival as a club we have been a bit indifferent to linking training sessions with the fans. The East West day comes to mind and today's effort was a particularly disappointing outcome. I get that the playing group and training is spread far and wide (Sunshine Coast and Ballarat etc) but like many others I got there early expecting one thing and getting something completely different.

I would have liked to reported back to the WOOF members with some tidbits and opinions but like most of us I will have to be waiting until the 21st for a really good look at our players

For a forum that has been particularly light on for discussion this could have been a decent boost to participation.

Am I expecting too much that the change of plans with the (well) advertised training session could have been flagged with the fans late yesterday or even first thing this morning? The last thing I want is to unnecessarily risk any player to satisfy a few hundred fans but a text message or update on Twitter might have saved some people from the trip.
It's the right decision from a playing perspective but there was probably a missed opportunity to inform the fans

Yes sadly a lot of fans plan the day with the kids it’s a real let down and it’s something the club lacks in as far as getting The fans feel as part of the club.
Hopefully they realise this and fix it.
Even if they just picked out some kids in the crowd and did kick to kick with them for 10 min would be engaging.
You would have those fans and their kids members for life.

I get that managing player loads is the highest priority because if they don't perform during the season there will be no fans, but as an exercise in marketing that is below amateur.

Yeah it's pretty poor. It's OK for me-I live around the corner from the ground but I wouldn't be this understanding if I'd driven from the other side of town after promising my kids they would see training. If that had happened I would be ropable and I wouldn't be leaving without some answers and a grovelling apology. The grovelling apology would cover the next time they get a bright idea like that-put some thought into it and it's not such a bright idea.

Bevo certainly has a weird hang up about track watchers. The last time we were thrown out of a session I told Chris Marple that they had exactly 18 months to win a flag or I would point blank refuse to leave a public area that I pay rates for. That was in May 2015 and ( I am happy to say) the players have trained in front of empty houses ever since...

I'm torn as it's not great from a PR/fan engagement perspective, but on the other hand, all I care about is onfield results and I'd imagine most kids attend an open training to grab an autograph and a photo op which it seems was still accomodated.

I'd say with a bit of planning the fans could have still been engaged as per the original plan or at the very least knowing that they had a bigger session on Friday then some basic and timely communication to the supporters could have saved some for the trip.
The photo opportunity was a decent outcome but a few people I talked to were still disappointed that they had made the trip

No one wants they players to be risked but it wasn't great for the supporters and if the club really wants to engage supporters they need to do better.

Silly question I guess - but is Whitten oval closed for normal training? I live other side of town so never go - but from memory you can see the ground from the cafe and merch store - so I’m guessing anyone could watch any outdoor training anytime?

You can still see training from time to time. It's the practice matches that they seem to want kept in house

Doesn't sound like they got it right anywhere. But it's a training session gone wrong.

Plenty of worse things happening in the world that I'd describe as a train wreck.

The session might have been going better or worse than expected and they just kept them out of there longer expected.
It could just as easily be that Bevo changed his mind about potentially training in front of the media but I don't think I saw anyone from the media there anyway.

As Comrade said, it's just one session in front of some die hard supporters that will get over it quickly.
It might also be a line in the sand for those sort of days in the longer term.

I was a bit annoyed driving home but I'm over it now. Living in the leafy Eastern Suburbs :) I certainly wouldn't have left home at 7.30am on a Saturday especially after a brutal week at work for just a photo opportunity so next time I'll try and engage the club on Twitter beforehand

Had the weather been hot I would have expected it but the conditions both weather wise and from a Whitten Oval ground perspective would have perfect for a good old fashioned training session or practice game.

I miss the good old days of being able to report back on here after a training session :)

So disappointed.

The guys came out late. Weather was excellent, the turf is in exceptional condition and they did ... walk slowly for exact one round and then started with the fan engagement and signing.

Wasting my time to get up early and getting there to check out the boys for the first time this season.

I feel for all that attended yesterday and there have been some good points made but the club makes it clear that all these events are subject to change. Is over training the day before a good enough reason?

Bevo certainly has a weird hang up about track watchers. The last time we were thrown out of a session I told Chris Marple that they had exactly 18 months to win a flag or I would point blank refuse to leave a public area that I pay rates for. That was in May 2015 and ( I am happy to say) the players have trained in front of empty houses ever since...

I wonder if Bevo is the coaching version of Colonel Flagg from MASH fame? :)

I say with 100% certainty that the black curtains and kicking out supporters is doing exactly ZERO to prevent opposition analysts from other clubs from getting vision of training - practice matches or otherwise.

As usual, the paranoid people are the ones with some idea of what is really going on. But worrying about fans going along to have a look - from the outer or the cafe - is 100% NOT stopping the spies getting a look and taking vision of training. And I suspect (but can't say with authority) that our own analysts have vision and details of the other 17 sides and are well prepared for the season ahead.

Considering the ground is completely open for the majority of its circumference I'm surprised the club even bothers.

After two JLT games a team's gamestyle is largely known anyway especially considering JLT 2 is an audition for round 1.

The thing you have to weigh up is whether you think benefit of getting a competitive edge over your opposition (which as you say is small to negligible, given every club has ways to spy on every other) is worth the cost of alienating the people who love the club or might be interested in getting closer to it. The club likes to sell itself as a community club but the reality is that the actions don't really seem to match the rhetoric at the base supporter level. Maybe when they analyse why they're falling short of membership targets they can include their capacity to short change supporters in these sort of ways which may seem minor, but add up over time.

The old days training was late afternoon, so we could sneak down there after school

They were great days-I virtually grew up kicking the footy around the terraces at Whitten Oval. One day they got a bunch of us to shoot handballs at Kelvin Templeton-you know me I'm an upfront kind of guy, ask me to have a go at something and I will give it a try and I don't exactly do the shrinking violet thing but this day I was so nervous that I managed to hit KT on the back of the head with the third or fourth handball i tried which was a pretty good effort because I was standing directly in front of him!

In fact I am pretty sure that was the day I decided that nerves just held you back and if you get an opportunity to do something like that then take it. That's how I met Joey Ramone, I saw him sitting outside Festival Hall as we went past on the train so we got off at North Melbourne, barged up to the man and said "Giddaye" we ended up speaking for an hour or so.

Great to have our own stand alone team after affiliating with Williamstown and Werribee in the past. Love this club. Really impressed with our community work that we do along with the supporter groups East West Club most notably who do the best they can for our fans out east/south east. A great examples are the sons and duaghters of the west programs which have extended further out I believe the sons of the west now running in the Whittlesea council and the East West Club who I hear are trying to get sons of the west out our way.

The man won best on ground with his bad shoulder NOT taped up at all.

Jong could have easily won both. He had a great GF in 2014 as well.

Yep it's all "ho ho ho wasnt it funny" but Jongy was running around without his shoulder bandage holding his dislocated shoulder in place.

I am pretty sure it was a broken collarbone, not a dislocated shoulder. Wouldn't really require taping, just don't want blokes smashing into it all day. That kinda makes the tape smokescreen working even funnier.

If he didn’t have the backing of every bulldog supporter before then he definitely did after it , a sad but happy story if that makes sense, remember he was screaming to try and get in the AFL grand final team. He did everything he could to be named in it.

It would take some Jungian analysis to interpret Libba's tatts.

I guess ultimately that means zero *$&#$'s given...but why would this be members only?

If you want people to show up and sign up, wouldn't you throw the gates open, get some bouncy castles, fire up the band...you know, get a bit of interest and excitement about the place?

I have a membership based business so 100% understand that there are some things for members and some things that are 'open' but once the decision is made to open the gates, aren't the gates open and the costs sunk? Why not try and get a few MORE members out of the whole thing? Or is the thought process that people will be so desperate to see an intraclub game that they will sign-up in order to do so? If so, I think that is very flawed logic...

Could it be as simple as a compromise between Beveridge and the club.

As we know by how empty the pre-season thread is of anything that could be deemed "exciting", Beveridge would rather get matching chest tattoos with Jake Stringer than let some random passerby see Riley Garcia run laps of Whitten oval, let alone expose a full blown intraclub match to the unwashed public.

And the club has no doubt gotten sick of spending the last 5 years telling supporters that they aren't allowed passed the black curtain (plus they kind of put everyone offside with the whole "open training" session that was a lap of the ground and then texta work).

I'm tipping the club told Beveridge that they want the intraclub to be open for the fans, and he said no way, so they said ok just for the members then.

I just want to know why he cares so much? I am at the venue where West Coast train several times each week (interpret that however you like) and fans are 99.9% allowed in for training...including a full-blown match sim last week. Like...who cares? I 100% don't understand what he is so worried about. But then, whilst I understood the breach of trust issues around the whole 'Talia incident', at the time (and to this day) I just didn't understand his belief that the sharing of game-plan info cost us the game. No-one playing on Betts in the first q cost us the game...unless the plan was not to match him up and that was supposed to be a surprise...and because he WASN'T surprised is why he ran around and kicked goals? But if he hadn't known the plan was to leave him unattended he would have been SO surprised he wouldn't have kicked any goals?

I'd be inclined to think it's a ploy to get people to sign up for access more so than a compromise between a belligerent coach and management, but you never know. As MJP has previously said anyone who really wants to see or know what we're doing can if they want to, the black curtain at the café would be a signal of intent more than anything else.

This sits reasonably well with me, it's nice to give committed members access related privileges that non-members don't enjoy. It's a bit like giving coterie members higher privileges that regular members don't enjoy. Recognition of a higher commitment isn't a bad thing, and this could be a small token of that.

I think it's great to have a members only session. You want to be part of it, sign up, put your money where your mouth is.

I have always said membership is not just for discount attendance at matches, membership is being part of a CLUB.

Whilst I agree about membership being part of the club getting members at this time of year is of far more importance !!! Why not members free and non members a gold coin donation that goes to one of our programs??? I don't as rule attend these open sessions anyway but any chance we get to advertise for memberships should be taken surely??

This is a good way to say to those non members, unless you become part of the club, this is the sort of thing you miss out on, at the same time we reward the members.

Oh i completely agree. While i think he is a good coach, Beveridge has some really weird ways of handling things and i have no idea why he is so secretive of stuff that will be exposed by halftime of the first practice game. We arent going to lose games because someone has seen us train a gamestyle.

It's almost as if he likes removing the playing group from the fans. Maybe its to help foster more of a tight knit vibe from the playing group or something but whatever it is it's only worked 2 seasons max and otherwise has just been frustrating from a fans pov.

Yeah this isn't the place to do it imo.

This is an easy win. Invite everyone, have the membership tent set up and focus on using this to create some buzz and drag those guys on the fence (both figuratively and literally) in. No one is going to sign up for a membership because otherwise they can't get into an intraclub, but i have no doubt that if non members come we will see some of them sign up.

We've sucked at grabbing the easy wins with our supporter group pretty much ever since the day after the premiership imo and this just seems like another needless decision that in no way benefits us.

Whilst that's true, there has been a clear change in terms of training access since Bevo took over in 2015 so either he's behind it or it's just a real coincidence.

I don’t mind this. Realistically, how many non-members are going to roll up if you make it open to everyone?

You make members feel like they are getting exclusive content and more value and you may entice a few to sign up earlier.

Like match day entry and merchandise?

Look I have no problem with some members only events or whatever as an extra benefit but you specifically said "My personal opinion is I am sick of pandering to non members practically begging them to join up. Either you are in or out *!*!*!*! them." Which is very much about non-members more than members.

I think a pre-season practice match is the perfect type of event and the perfect time of the season to be trying to convince people wavering about buying a membership to join up, remind them how great the finish to last year was. It's also an excuse for people intending to buy a membership to head down to the club and do it while they're there.

'*!*!*!*! 'em' is hardly going to turn the club into a Collingwood or Richmond. We don't get that luxury.
