Thought I'd share a group picture from last Sunday's WB Past Players AGM.

I do have a left to right name listing of the photo but thought I'd hold out posting it up, giving those game enough to have a crack at a 'Who's Who?' quiz whilst we're in the off-season

Sorry 15.9 :) It is very rare to score that many goals in the game today. What a player! Also I believe that was our highest ever score in our history that game in 1978.

My dad worked with the rat (Ian Bryant) at Footscray council for years. One day dad came home with a black eye, a split lip and his nose spread halfway across his face. He looked like he had gone 15 rounds with Barry Michael*. I asked him what happened and he said they were having a kick at lunchtime at the council depot and dad says the last thing he remembers is running back with the flight of the ball and the next thing he is in the back of an ambulance.

I said 'How?" and he just said "the rat. He forgot we were just having a kick and thought I was Bobby Skilton I think"


*Funny story about Barry Michael. One night we were in the lift at Marvel stadium and Barry Michael gets in at6 the next floor. He sees the old man and says "Giddaye Norris, how have you been? Geez it's been ages since I ran into you" and dad answers back with "Yeah, giddaye, ummm, mate!" Barry gets off the lift and I said to my dad "You don't know who that is do you?" and dad said "yeah, it's one of the blokes I worked with at the council. I'm buggered if I can remember his name though!" I don't think I have ever laughed so uncontrollably in my life. IOt took me a good five minutes to calm down enough to tell dad that he was actually the featherweight champion of the world, not just 'some bloke I worked with at the council!"

Great point. I love how Bernie Quinlan has found his home back at the Bulldogs.

They all come back. Dempsey, Round, Templeton all know where their true home is. They may have left looking for success (and looking back I no longer blame them-well maybe a little bit!)

Terrific person Bernie who resides in the Frankston area these days and enjoys spending time locally with Don Scott and Tony Jewell.
He is still closely connected with the Western Bulldogs.

My grand father really didn't rate Bernie or I should say in fairness to him that he tried many times to tell me that Bernie was nothing compared to Whitten but I stood my ground saying that Bernie was one of the most talented players going around.
He could play CHB, CHF or FF and I've written a few times how he was used in the ruck with impact from time to time.
He was everything in a footballer I could have ever dreamed to be. Tall, versatile and the longest kick I've seen and he would still be a significant force in the AFL today if he was coming through the junior pathway.

There have been just a handful of Bulldog players that really caught my eye when I was young. Quinlan was the standout and Templeton had an amazing period as one of the competition premier forwards.
Sadly like so many others during that time most of them failed to complete their footy careers with us.

Seeing Quinlan and Templeton together in that group photo is just awesome for me.

I genuinely feel privileged to have watched Quinlan in the red, white and blue and it's a shame that he probably played his best football at Fitzroy.

Roy Evans who Captained Footscray to our first ever Finals appearance in the 1930’s and later became our Reserves Coach said that he loved to see Quinlan in action with the Dogs because of his outstanding skills. It was great that he should go on to share the Brownlow Medal with close mate Barry Round.

There was also the reciprocal, my young innocent self was shocked to hear the crowd give Bernie the Bronx cheer in defeat.

Bernie booted 9.5 playing CHF against Carlton at Princes Park. Also booted the longest ever kick on WOS Champion Kick - an 85 yard torpedo. He was a great player. Went into the ruck for the Roys in the last quarter of a Final and booted 4 goals to nearly win them the game. Super player.

Courageous, skilful, a beautiful drop kick and ultra reliable defender. Also had a soft spot for our back pocket players, Charlie Evans, Ian Bryant, Gordon Casey, Ray Walker, Terry Wheeler etc. Maybe, our teams being what they were, it was just that the backline had a few more opportunities than the forwards to strut their stuff.

Yes, I met his wife up here at the GABBA one evening in the late 90's, and she told me John had terminal cancer andcwas too sick to make the trip up to the game.

John Jillard was a favorite of mine too. A really close checking half back flanker. Very fair but hard player to win a kick on. Had good clean hands and was a lovely kick.

Roy Evans who Captained Footscray to our first ever Finals appearance in the 1930’s and later became our Reserves Coach said that he loved to see Quinlan in action with the Dogs because of his outstanding skills. It was great that he should go on to share the Brownlow Medal with close mate Barry Round.

Roy was a great friend of our family and the reason why I got into the playing rooms before and after games when I was a kid. Such a funny man, great amatuer magician and terrific guy overall. He told me once that Ted came to his place, not sure what year and asked him to coach the firsts. The committee would not endorse it though.He was a terrific cricketer too. In one match for Yarraville he was the wicket keeper. He took the pads off to bowl and duly got a hat trick. Such fond memories of Roy.

He told me once that Ted came to his place, not sure what year and asked him to coach the firsts. The committee would not endorse it though.He was a terrific cricketer too. Apart from being fine players for the Club both Roy Evans and Joe Ryan as Assistant Coaches were highly regarded and inspirational influences at the Club in the manner in which they were so supportive to the senior playing group. Their support of senior Coaches in Charlie Sutton and Ted Whitten created the right atmosphere that led to competitive on field performances.

We sat behind the goals Beazer was kicking to (as we usually did-we'd go from end to end at the old suburban grounds) and I am pretty sure that was the day Beasley (Sam Newman called him ''the pink and shell like'' Simon Beasley on World of Sport the nest day) cleaned up Keith Greig and sent him home in the back of an ambulance.

Simon Beasley was a great player. Forget about his pasty complexion and middle-of-the-road physique he was a very courageous footballer who never shirked an issue. And remember this: as our go to forward he was a marked man, often having to battle a full-back and a resting ruckman. He was a terrific lead and had superb timing, strong hands and was a great long kick who could boot drop punt goals from beyond the 50m arc. I loved The Pieman. He was a great clubman too.

He was known for being hopeless once the ball hit the ground though.

I just looked it up and I had the right place but the wrong. It was against Geelong! Round 2 1984.

It wasn't the media back then it was the bloke standing next to you at games that you got feedback from, and the feedback was instantaneous and brutal. If you reckon that social media was bad for mental health nowadays then try going back 30 years and have 20 000 people all calling you useless at the same time.

Even after the back end of the season where he kicked where he kicked 58 goals in the last 10 games to finish with 82 the average punter in the outer was saying "Yeah, nah, he's alright but the hype on him was much bigger than this"

That day he steered through his hundredth goal in 1985 he must have thought "Yeah, up your arse the lot of yours!"

After that I sent Beasley the only letter I've ever sent to a player. I told him he could be great with the supply coming from Hawkins, Royal and co. if he could get his kicking free of nerves!
He ended up being one of the most accurate of all times.
