Peter Gordon has already saved the Western Bulldogs from one financial crisis and hopes to do it again as AFL clubs prepare to make significant cuts to survive the COVID-19 break.

The club president helped the Bulldogs through 1989, where they nearly merged with Fitzroy, but says this crisis is a different challenge altogether.
"That was a terrible time, but nothing compared to this," Gordon told SEN’s Whateley.

"What united us in those events, troubling events we've survived in our past, is we worked out way through it by working together and we'll do that here."

Gordon is hoping the club can get through this period without sacking staff in order to keep the club afloat.
"I hope there won't be layoffs," Gordon said.

"There are a whole range of issues or options that are on the table. There are questions of taking leave, questions of shortened hours, there are questions of the possibility of just standing the people (down) who literally won't have anything to do for the next few months.

"We want to work those things through. Our guiding principle is trying to work out if we can put the industry on pause for two months and manage the cash flow problem, which is significant here.”

Prolly the most important person in the history of the club.

Along with George Sayers who drove us into the VFL by funding player recruitment and payment via the Footscray lottery he ran and which one of his mates miraculously won every time it was drawn.

And A bloke called James Cuming who owned a local factory and provided most of the finances to recruit the first really great Footscray team that won the hatrick of premierships from 1898-1899-1900. He put the cash up that paid Dave De Coite and Joe Marmo to come over from West Australian.

Gotta say this is the first time in my lifetime that our club hasn’t been mentioned in merge media talk

Just one more way this period of time is unprecedented.

We are in much better shape now than we were all those years ago and great to not be in debt but still this will be one of the most challenging times for all of us at the club but will get through this.

We couldn't have picked a better time to start winning premierships.

How important is the next flag to us? If we can win one to mark footy's return in 2021 it'd really put some distance between us and the the club's we've traditionally been lumped with. Could flip history on it's head.

Great time to start winning them. The financial rewards are huge as we found out after we won in 2016 and then carried over to 2017 with our biggest membership tally - just disappointing we couldn’t maintain that consistency after 2016.
