Collingwood star Steele Sidebottom was found half-naked in Williamstown before being taken home by police officers.

According to a witness who spoke with the Herald Sun, Sidebottom appeared naked and wanted to return home because it was “cold and freezing”.

The witness said: “I was there, I was visiting my mate and he looked naked and the coppers knew him straight away.’’

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley says star midfielder Steele Sidebottom is “embarrassed” about his AFL COVID-19 protocols breach yet remains “confused” over what went down after he was dropped off at club employee Daniel Wells’ place.

The star midfielder broke league rules after returning to Melbourne on Saturday following the club’s loss to the Giants the night before. He visited injured teammate Jeremy Howe — fellow Pie Lynden Dunn also made an appearance — before catching an Uber and spending most of the night at Wells’ house.

He's earned a month's holiday - seems about on par with Hunter's shenanigans.

He's arguably more critical to them than even Hunter is to us, Bucks will be thrilled.

I reckon getting on the piss and wrecking four or five cars, fleeing the scene and continuing to piss on is a fair bit worse...…..

Although it is Collingwood where the full extent of any player misdemeanour will only come out in later washes, putting more egg on Ed's and Buck's faces for the viewing pleasure of opposing fans.

The AFL has probably just added a week or two for probable contingency.

Can't disagree, which may explain this cruel and unusual element of Lachie's penance.

I'm just speculating but maybe Steele has made a "friend" while he was out socialising and gone back to hers? Then perhaps her partner/husband/boyfriend has returned home necessitating Steele's swift egress out of a window and into the street without the opportunity to put his clothes back on?

Williamstown can be a wild place. I woke up face down on Willy beach after my high school graduation. Still can't remember how I got there. The last place I remember being was at a disco in Footscray.

Williamstown is the weirdest suburb in Melbourne easily.

Agreed 100%. If Hunter is worth 4 weeks, Sidebottom is incredibly stiff to cop the same.

I can still remember it being a blue collar wharfie Painter's and Dockers (not the band although one member lives in Willy these days). In 1973 my parent's had the choice between buying a beachfront house in Nelson place or a house in Yarraville. They went for the house in Yarraville (the place in Willy was next to a block of flats) and I never forgave them for it. The house in Yarraville is now worth a million plus but the one in Willy was across the road from the freaking beach! And is probably worth just as much. More actually.

Both Yarraville and Williamstown I think the average prices there are $1 million now.

It's a sleepy hollow there now.

If I could guess I reckon someone's had a bit of a crack at a cocktail of undetectable substances and booze...…...or, just can't handle the latter too well. That explains the disorientation.

It's actively gentrifying but there are still lots of pubs that you need to mind your own business in. Most of the boat building dry docks have gone, as have the wharves and the Naval Dockyard a where they built frigates but lots of blue singlet wearing wharfies still live locally.

Clive Palmer (who remains a bulldog supporter) grew up in and got his start in business in Williamstown. He still owns (I think) a Titanic themed theatre restaurant right down the end of the retail strip. If you can picture a pub with a scale model of half of the Titanic sticking out the front then you get the local vibe.

And I haven't even started on the local VFL club. Or the fact that Joan Kirner and Steve Bracks were the local members of state parliament for 25+ years between them.

McGuire on Hunter: “The media ‘kick people to death’ when players make mistakes.”

McGuire on Steven: “Just tell us what the hell happened.”

McGuire on Sidebottom: “Did the right thing in every situation. Drank too much, a few things went wrong... We’re proud of him tonight.”

Is that the actual quote?!? The guy was found half naked and completely disorientated in the middle of the night by the cops, where the fudge in that sentence is there something to be proud of?

Steele's lucky he's a footballer and the cops recognised him, I doubt he would have gotten such a genial lift home if it weren't for his profile...

Based on what has been reported, 4 weeks appears to be a week or so on the higher side than he probably should have received but it's clearly an 'enough is enough' attitude at the AFL HQ

There might be a bit more too this because Collingwood would normally challenge this type of suspension

You might be right. The early reports I read were a bit equivocal about the cause of his insobriety.

You'd think he'd be tested as a result. Players have access to all sorts of pain killers over the journey, what was reported doesn't seem like a party drug response unless he was completely gacked…….and I don't see that happening at this stage of the season.

The AFL laid down the rules at the start of all this and did say they would come down hard on any covid-19 breaches.

I don't see how wandering around hammered and lacking clothing, being driven home by police and breaking AFL restricted protocols is something for which a four week sanction could be considered a heavy touch. Especially given a couple of Melbourne players copped two weeks for attending a party without shitting their pants in public.

Could it be that after years and years of conditioning, our fearless leader GvGjnr has become, if you will, a Collingwood apologist?

I should surely hope not.

You kinda have to feel sorry for poor old Eddie.

His players continue to let him down, with monotonous regularity.

Just a few days after saying that a Co-vid breach should earn a $100k fine, and be worth a season suspension for the player/s concerned. Yep its two Collingwood players who offends. Of course, when, its a four week sentence for one of them that's an overkill, and the club won't add to it. Now its a Collingwood player caught out, they have forgotten the needs of the competition, and are now only concerned for the "player's welfare".

Then, to pile it on, the De Goey & Lumumba cases. Eddie can rabbit on all he wants about respect both for women and other races, but his players appear to have let him down in those areas as well. Certainly they have hit the headlines in fairly undesirable ways lately.

Thankfully, the De Goey case is now (apparently) out of the hands of the Collingwood spin doctors.

No, not really. Eddie also lets himself down in the areas you highlight.

Eddie shouldn't say things unless he intents to follow through himself. Not sure if you saw the footage off Eddie going off about the $100K fine but he should come out and explain why he hasn't applied the penalty to the Collingwood players. At the time he was very passionate and strong in his convictions about the issue. But now not so muhc.
