Assuming Naughton is back I think we're a really good chance here. Andrews' reputation is benefitting from the dearth of quality key forwards at the moment (as shown in his poor effort on Lynch last week) and is left to create a bit too much owing to the overall lack of talent in the Brisbane defence. If we have Naughton back then he'll be forced to engage, and it should lead to better looks and more goals with little threat of intercept from anyone else.
But wow what a game to lose Crozier before.

That he is but you don't have to take 5 bounces and kick 55 metre goals to hurt the opposition. To say he doesn't hurt the opposition by winning contested ball and cleverly distributing it by hand and foot does him a disservice. Bont has been down at times but virtually no impact? Please.

I'm not the only one there was a mongrel punt article a few weeks ago that said the very same thing. He's an accumulator and has been playing inside many teams will select one player to tag and Jack has been that player a few times. Re. Bont no impact is a stretch but he is down on form or playing injured and the opposition know it.
You often defend players and while I think it's admirable even you have too admit that Jack does not carry the ball, has no penetration in his kicking, does not get forward as a mid to score that often, is not quick and can often turn it over by making bad decisions. Don't get me wrong, I love him and have had him in my best most weeks this year but he seldom hurts the opposition in any meaningful way.

It is funny. He is so consistent week to week which not a lot of players on our list can say. I've said it before that he's rarely missed a game for us. I think we'd notice big time if he were out injured/suspended.

The world’s best athletes stay the best because they have people monitoring every aspect of their performance and giving constructive criticism. I feel puzzled that nobody is doing that for Macrae. He could be the competition’s most valuable player with a few of the tweaks you mentioned. Something is lacking in the coaching when we haven’t seen some modifications over the last 3 years.

I think we are just disagreeing over definitions. I don't believe the only way to hurt the opposition is to do the flashy outside things. Libba can hurt the opposition by denying their mids first use by winning the ball himself. A good backman can hurt the opposition by nullifying a forward. There's more than on way to skin a cat.
To me someone who doesn't hurt the opposition may be a mid that is overly conservative with their possessions, rarely looking to attack, or who has poor disposal and often hands to ball back to the other team. Macrae often hits aggressive angle kicks through the middle that open the ground up for his teammates - that's hurting the opposition to me.

Is 1ED mentioning tweeks or limitations? To me Macrae plays to his strengths, within his limitations. He can't get quicker or kick the ball further. He may be able to hit the scoreboard more but we have other mids more suited to that. I don't think there's much he needs to change. I strongly dispute that he often turns the ball over with bad decisions though - more of an exception than a rule I would have thought.

I am strong disagreement with much of what you say about Macrae
Jack does not carry the ball True, but he is very effective at moving the ball on and being in position to receive. He provides the options for defenders and sets up scoring chains.
no penetration in his kicking Jack is not a long kick but his DE is very sound.
can often turn it over by making bad decisions I think his issue here is that he often chooses high risk options to get us going, but his turnover rate is not excessive.
he seldom hurts the opposition in any meaningful way His score involvement is ahead of Bont and Macrae is often the instigator of scoring chains, plus a few other opportunities that breakdown due to the performances of those further up the ground.
I do agree that he doesn't do enough in actually taking shots at goal and I am sometimes concerned that he has days where he doesn't work hard enough defensively, but generally that is an exception.

I think his kicking could be improved significantly.
At the moment his passes are floating towards the target and that allows the opposition valuable time to man up and either spoil or corral.
Not worried about distance but a flatter trajectory would help the forwards enormously.

I think you're right. When I say hurting the opposition I meant more in terms of the examples I provided i.e. scoring (although he has brought this into his game over the past few years), carrying the ball etc. but in hindsight he's not that kind of mid, so perhaps I'm judging him for what he's not not based on what he is. I do understand how you define winning the ball in close (which he does at an elite level), as causing hurt to the opposition.
I'm not sure I agree on his kicking. It's been getting crazier and more high risk. Last year he started kicking like Piggy but without the penetration and , this season in particular, has been taking more and more risk with his kicks. Sure he's trying to be creative and get us going and sometimes they don't work. Was it Macrae who tried that sideways kick to JJ that led to turnover goal? I can't remember. I'm just trying to bring attention to that because gifting the ball to the opposition in critical moments is, well it's soul destroying. Just ask JJ.
Anyway that's enough of me looking at Macrae glass half empty, he also has tremendous strengths

I certainly do sometimes, my Mother drank heavily during the pregnancy. And focus. I often lose focus on the topic.
Anyway, it was dealt with in an earlier post, the discussion was clouded by our definition of hurt factor and I agree. But I stand by what I said.

I get what 1ED is saying - Macrae isn't going to kick 3+ goals like a Dusty/Danger/Bont and he's not going to run the lines like Hill/I Smith/Gaff. These are all players who can rip sides apart with dominating hurt factor.
But he's still very damaging and hurts sides with his ability to win the ball inside and outside the contest, bring others into the game with his hands and his vision/risk taking with his kicking.
I think Hunter is a player that lacks hurt factor much more so than Macrae, and that's despite Lachie being a very good player.

Our inside 50s are not hurting anyone other then ourselves. 7 out of 8 bounce back out. Often marked by opposition, giving them time to set up a damaging play.
That is why we struggle to get a handful of goals.
If someone improved Macrae’s kicking a little it might be helpful.
He is a fantastic player, always has been, but like many others at the club he is not showing the benefit of quality mentoring. (Apart from becoming a ruckman- which actually diminishes his contributions).
Oh well, at least he stayed. Oh well, at least he isn’t getting worse- we can say that about others.

Macrae is a damaging player. Accumulators don't rank 27th in the AFL in metres gained, which is a really impressive feat considering his rate of centre bounce attendance (actual accumulators Tom Mitchell and Matt Crouch are 87th and 1,000,000th for comparison). Can't believe this is even an argument to be honest.

How often is Macrae also the link when we clear out of defence. He is an amazing player. Without Jackson, no 2016 flag. As well as THAT goal, his efforts in the Hawthorn match as well as the GF were incredible, in fact whenever I’ve watched that game I’ve seen more and more how influential he was - it wouldn’t have been an injustice if he’d won the Norm Smith medal.

There’s no argument. Nobody on here is picking on Macrae. Nobody is criticising him in a negative way.
WE knew he would be one of our best players for a decade when we drafted him. And he has proven us correct.
But to point out, in a minor way, that he is not perfect is a crime. Wow.
Professionals are always striving to be better. People on here want them to be the best they can, that’s why they offer constructive comments.

Macrae is superb. Dependable but at a much higher level than who we would usually ascribe that adjective too. He has one particular kick, low across his body and pulled to try and cut away through traffic that I think he over uses a bit. It looks good when it gets where it needed to go but is difficult to handle and doesn't take enough ground to really open up the field. He needs to use that a bit more sparingly.
Anyway. Tonight:
We will get flogged.

https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/news/791362/four-things-to-watch-round-11
Four things to watch: Round 11
The four hot topics and talking points ahead of Saturday night's clash against Brisbane at the Gabba.
1. Dogs add forward firepower
The Bulldogs will welcome back two proven goal-kickers in Aaron Naughton and Bailey Dale this week.
Both were pivotal players in 2019, but have had their injury struggles in recent times.
Naughton hasn’t played since round four, while Dale has missed the past three weeks.
But their nous around goal will be welcomed by a Bulldogs’ outfit which fought valiantly, however could only manage five goals last week against Port Adelaide.
Don’t expect miracles from the returning duo straight away. However, two more dangerous targets will undoubtedly help – and potentially free up others around goal.
2. The Neale Factor
Brisbane star Lachie Neale is among the Brownlow Medal front-runners at this point of the season.
He’s having another exceptional season.
Despite the shortened quarters, Neale is averaging 28.5 disposals and 5.5 clearances per game. Both of those numbers put him among the competition’s elite.
He’s also averaging a goal per game.
The Bulldogs have a star-studded midfield group of their own, but no doubt they will have one eye on reducing Neale’s impact as best they can.
3. Point to prove
Every game is important in this shortened season.
But you get the feeling these two teams will both have a point to prove on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs find themselves outside the top eight with a 5-5 record after 10 rounds – and desperate for a win after losses to top-four teams Richmond and Port Adelaide.
The Lions sit inside the top four – with a 7-3 record – but were humbled by the Tigers also last week.
Both of these teams are chock-full with young talent and will be looking forward to the opportunity on a big Saturday night stage.
4. English exam
Tim English has taken some big strides already in 2020.
Saturday night against the Lions looms as another opportunity for him to further establish his reputation as a star on the rise.
The Lions have a relatively inexperienced ruck combination this week – with Oscar McInerney joined by Matt Eagles in their side this week.
English is still just 22 years old, but the emerging big man has proven a match-winner on multiple occasions this year.
He’s averaging more than 15 disposals per game, and the Bulldogs will be hoping he can continue to make his presence felt around the ground.
